Sony has no sense of direction

I don't think they have lost the sense of direction since there's probably good stuff in the pipeline - but watching crap like Concord they're definitely playing with fire.

Nah they are fine. State of play was disappointing but mostly cos we're starved and people had expectations more inline with a showcase. Astrobot looks great, until dawn remaster looks good (I never finished the old one). For a state of play, astrobot which is releasing soon, is enough. The rest was fluff…samey droll fluff. I wish they'd shown interesting indies instead of a lot of it 🤷‍♂️. Silent hill I think will be fine.

Edit: PlayStation also went in hard on GAAS a few years ago, and seems that's largely been decided was a mistake. They do however need some, have a gem with helldivers (tho having loved the first it was obvious that would be great fun). They cancelled many they had in dev, we'll see the handful that survived the culling. Most I expect to fail, if they get one more hit tho I expect they'll view it as a success.

Okay GAF. What do we want Sony to do? You've got people who have been wanting them to do more multiplayer games. People who want them to do single player games that don't feel like movies. Then you have people who want them to keep doing those big cinematic games. Are they supposed to ONLY do those games? Is it okay if they do others? If they do only those games are we gonna complain that they're a one-trick pony? If they try to diversify do we complain they have no direction? I just need to know what my narrative is supposed to be, because I'm getting really confused and I gotta be honest... it's turning me on. And you won't like me when I'm turned on. (You will)
You should probably search for their opinions on the Dualsense Edge and Playstation Portal and their pricings. If they said "It will be DOA", "Who is this for?" etc, you can disregard their opinion about what Sony should make, seeing these products are consistently in the top selling categories.
p.s. I won't buy Concord; I don't like hero shooters and Marvel dialogue. Astro looked so good though, my god

Search also for their opinions on Vita.

Helldivers 2 was not an order from Sony: "give us a GAAS game". It's a fun sequel to their previous game and Sony got lucky by acquiring them.
Sony didn't acquire Arrow Head but they own the Helldivers IP so if Arrow Head wants to continue working on it, they must work with Sony.
They are a second party studio at this point.

Sony genuinely thought everyone would love Concord. "Finally PS5 owners, we will now give you the gem of the generation"

I kinda agree... Concord is a Overwatch wannabe meets Guardians of the Galaxy tha could have found success 3 or more years ago, but now will probably just be sent to die like Destruction All Stars did.

Also, those Chinese souls like games will probably end up being like Lost Soul Aside, maybe one day they will be released... I hope so...

This State of Play was weird.

Sadly for an old fart like myself that show proves I will be keeping a lot more of my money
The question is, why should Sony have a 30 minute presentation lined up with a bunch of games that you specifically would be interested in?
There are many people who like many things - as you yourself have said. I'm sure someone will like Concord, I know I won't. But does that mean it shouldn't exist ? Does that mean it shouldn't get airtime? Just because I don't like Overwatch-lite Hero shooters?

If I had my way, the entire presentation would have been platformers, but that's not gonna appeal to everyone either.

Lol.. this is a SOP post-mortem thread alright. It always happens... piss on everything shown then when said things come out and actually do well watch them vanish.

Concord... was just one of like 10+ games shown? And what's funny is that there were a couple of games or new IPs in there that no one ever heard about or even expected that looked good to me.

I mean, if any company shows 15ish games, I wouldn't expect all of them to appeal to everyone. I am good if three appeal to me. But when you see someone saying they are ALL bad? Thats suspect.

I am sure many will find a lot of those games interesting but for me personally what made Playstation great were the big boy single player epic games and lately we just haven't gotten that from them

Concord may find a niche of players but feels like its 5 years too late to the Overwatch party

I know people just like to shit on things but even the poll here and even Keighly's poll seems to show the majority wasn't impressed by the show overall.

But again I am just old and just loved the Playstation of old and finding less and less reasons to own a Playstation

Astro Bot may end up as my GOTY. I think the PS5 has been underwhelming so far, but I will buy both SH2 and Astro Boy and hope for more.

Nokia thought the same with physical buttons before touchscreens came out of nowhere and redefined the mobile experience. Market preferences can shift dramatically. Blackberry seemed invincible once.
Sony do games. Games determine who lead. You buy a console to play the games available on it. You don't buy a Nokia because their apps are exclusives.

Playstation partnered with Arrowhead to fund an isometric AA game in Helldivers 1. Playstation saw the potential in the studio and greenlit Helldivers 2 as a 3rd person shooter. Not only did Playstation give Arrowhead 7+ years to develop HD2, but midway through development Playstation decided to double the budget because they recognized how amazing it could be

I agree that Playstation isn't the most innovative publisher, as Arrowhead deserves full credit for how original Helldivers 2 is, but Playstation is the best at cultivating talent in the industry. Concord may be just an Overwatch clone, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being best arena shooter for consoles on the market

Yep, Astro Bot was about the only interesting thing unless Koei doesn't f up new Dynasty Warriors.

Monster Hunter could be good as well, but I am not into that series despite trying many times.

Sony's new sense of direction is live service and older titles being ported to PC, PC sales are working so far but will the live service push work, it never has for me, i guess time will tell.

End of the day Sony can be as directionless as they want, the PS5 generation has been the most profitable for them out of the previous 4...the competition isn't exactly giving them a run for their money, as far as they are concerned the job is done...onwards to PS6

It will get worse since they said on business meeting they target 1 tentpole sp game per year. It doesn't make sense to own a console for 6 games.

Sony have been very consistent in that every State of Play has been a disappointment.

Saying that, the doom and gloom knee-jerk reactions are always sure to follow.

Ragnorak is 1.5 years old. What else is being ported?

The conference sucked but so does this OP. The highlights were astrobot and monster hunter wilds. Lowlights were concord and well everything else. But your post makes no sense.

F like the state of play. No sense of direction.
Until Dawn is the 10 year old "port" being referenced.

For me Astro Bot alone made the SoP worthwhile, but there were other interesting games shown like SH2, Until Dawn, Where the winds meet, Path of Exile 2 and The Ballads of Antara, they all looked pretty good to me.

People seem to think Playstation was releasing 2-3 AAA blockbuster games per year last generation. The PS4 only had a handful of first party "must have games"

Uncharted 4
Horizon Zero Dawn
God of War
Spiderman 2018
Ghost of Tsushima
Tlou2

So I strongly disagree, people will continue to invest in the Playstation ecosystem if the quality of their games remain the same

I mean this Gen the only studio that is working for them is insomniac rest are pumping out remasters remakes and other non sense
I mean wolverine is this year fall or maybe next year and was announced like 2 years ago
Naughty dog don't have anything to announce ?? I mean even if they are releasing something in 2025 dnt u think there should be an announcement by now ?

4 months until Astro Bot release so if that's the delay, they have plenty of time

People shit on Xbox all the time but age of empires flight Sim, horizon 5 , halo (it's actually pretty good now ) they actually released first party games this Gen where Sony has been lack luster all this Gen

Did you just list a bunch of last-gen games that got current-gen ports? Why not have the same criteria for PlayStation, too, then?

The Overwatch type of hero shooters do not do it for me and personally I don't really view COD as a hero arena shooter

To me it's like XDefiant I tried it for a few rounds and 5hose types of games have run their course, those 4v4 or 5v5 waiting for your ultimate to recharge

Some will like it I am sure and that's cool, have fun with it, to me it's trash
They should've announced Socom or MAG, but Sony is toilet water and hates fun.

I remember when Gaf used to a place for intelligent people to discuss gaming, now it's filled with idiots who have zero perspective. This thread & OP is very reminiscent of N4G lol.

I want next narrative driven games like uncharted, god of war, last of us etc. single player, story driven, super fun to play games.

I feel that during the 7th gen they built their first party network, and during the 8th gen they had a good nose and sensed where solo games were headed. That made them successful.

But now they're reaching the glass ceiling with the current AAA framework. And to build a successful multiplayer franchise in the long run is a whole other level of challenge. Sony are good makers, they produce quality stuff (when it comes to their standards of production i mean), even now, but they don't really create trends or anything.

They need a new global opportunity, like they had with the shooters during the 7th gen and the open worlds in the 8th.

I don't know if its nostalgia... but if it's those big boy single-player games you are talking about... in all of last gen, Sony had like 5 across the gen. At least 5 properly successful ones.

We have already got 3 this gen so far. That... 3 properly successful ones. If we want we can extend the last gen to like 8 or 9,,, if we include the ones that were successful but not that great, and we can extend this gen to like 5 or 6.

The point is, Sony isn't really doing much differently from what they always used to do, even though they are releasing more stuff and making more deals than they typically used to. But it seems there is a general apathy towards gaming, especially amongst the "core" gamers. Its just weird, I mean even after this show... there were at least 3 new games/Ips in there. And two others making a proper current-gen debut, and that is before looking at any of the GAAS/VR/Port stuff. But here we are clamoring for stuff like MAG?

Strange...

It was inevitable, and probably better for it to turn out this way. At some point, someone at PlayStation wss going to walk into a meeting promising the moon on a stick with gaas shit. Sony needed to go all in so they could get burned in significant ways, otherwise, this period of "experimentation" would've lasted even longer.
It wouldn't be bad if Sony had any idea of making an appealing and Unique GaaS instead of picking the most generic shit and watching it flop. Stuff like Minecraft, Fortnite and Helldivers 2 blew up because they were deviating from the norm or were new and interesting ideas. Not because they were copying the same fucking concept over again with a different coat of paint, cringey writing and thinking it's the next biggest thing

I wouldn't have called it great, but I didn't hate it nearly as much as you all seemed to.

I'm excited about Until Dawn, Monster Hunter, and Alien VR. Silent Hill looked better than last time and since the original is one of my favorite games of all time so I'm optimistic despite Bloober. Concord could be good, we won't know until it's here.

They don't need one really, not with MS drunkenly stumbling around.

Yeah, this.

I didn't bother to watch the stream. I assumed they weren't going to have anything interesting to announce. But they don't need to. I hate to say it, but they could have a completely ho-hum next 18 months and they'll still probably be fine.

I also wonder if they'll be more open to announcing big games at other times of the year now instead of feeling like they have to save their announcements for the end of Q2? With E3 being dead, are they going to have a big showcase in August or September at some point? Or maybe in February if that's a better fit for their timelines? Or is the idea of saving up a bunch of announcements and releasing them in one show just a dead concept for them now?

Sony has no sense of direction

This is a state of play that is highlighted by having decade old games being ported to a computer. Smdh
What it "has no sense" is this OP

They are chasing money. Aka chasing gaas trash. These games will all fail and they will get back to their senses in the ps6 gen
Did MLB, Gran Turismo 7, Destiny 2 and Helldivers 2 fail?

Cool - what's the video game home console market equivalent that hasn't already been identified? The problem with dark horses is that, once they win, everyone starts looking for them. Take a look at the home console market and think of what you can do to disrupt it that hasn't already been tried.
