Sony has signed a partnership with NCSOFT

But why? Are they not selling enough consoles and games? Are they not making enough money?

PS4 sold 13 million unit in Asia; PS5 is on track to sell 25 million because SIE is investing in Japan, China, South Korea, and India.

Their console business is growing in Asia, and they are about to expand beyond console.

PS5 India Sales Analysis
Spider-Man 2018 sold over 100,000 units over its lifespan in part thanks to the franchise's ongoing appeal combined with fair pricing after it hit the PlayStation Hits label.

At the time Sony had about 350,000 PS4s.

Now the PS5 has an install base of around 300,000 units. These figures are both grey and official sales combined. By the end of the year, we should have about 350,000 PS5s in India.

Korea is the next Japan. The entertainment coming out of there is growing at an incredible rate. Their culture is spreading across the world. Squid games, and check out the shows on Netflix and of course Kpop. Their next big thing is gaming and comics/Manwha.

The Gaming Industry in Korea - A Complete Breakdown
South Korea is seen around the world as one of the top gaming countries. It is currently the world's 4th largest market for video games.

The overall gaming market in South Korea reached $15 billion in 2021.

It is also considered the Esports capital of the world and it makes sense. South Korea is known for its passion for technology which gives every citizen access to high-speed internet.

With the rise in IT infrastructure in Korea, there was the same level of rise in the gaming market in Korea. Soon internet cafes and PC rooms started to spring up all across Korea. These centers played a critical role in gaming companies in Korea like Nexon and NC Soft to develop competitive online/PC games due to the increase in demand.

Korean gaming companies have become very successful since the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, while they have found great success creating games for the Korean market, lately they have focused on the global market. China has been an avid consumer of Korean games.

Once the video console game industry started to see the rise of online platforms, they also saw the rise in the popularity of online games in South Korea. This was because the South Korean government invested heavily in the IT industry which caused the price of personal computers to go down. Add this to the development of high-speed internet lines and you have millions of Koreans eager to get into online gaming. Soon PC bangs and internet cafes started to spring up all over Korea. Most of the PC bangs were making money due to the fact that the cost of computers was lower than ever before and games like Starcraft and Lineage were more fun to play when played together under one roof.

Online video gaming was perfect for the types of games that Koreans love. One genre in particular called the massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) has been fully embraced by Korean gamers. One of the most popular MMORPG games in Korea is Lineage. Since 1998, Lineage has been a staple of the South Korean gaming industry. It has spawned sequels in both PC and mobile and has generated over $4.5 billion in sales to date.

These days, gamers in Korea are exploring other genres besides MMORPGs like first-person shooter games and multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs).

NCsoft is the publisher for Guild Wars, right?

Would be cool to have that on Playstation some day.

Edit:
Seems GW is theirs.

Their partnership with PlayStation= their attempt at AAA single player game.

Forgetting Korean cinema which is phenomenal IMO especially Thrillers/Horror

You prob saw the new game they showed, Throne and Liberty.

They made Lineage, Blade and Soul, Wild Star (RIP), Guild Wars 2, and the oldie City of Heroes

You can never have enough money, do you know how business works?
Yeah i know how business works.Get greedy, make shit products for less investment so you can make more money in theory,in practice lose customers, don't change tactics cuz you have to hit the insane "targets" you put on yourself, lose even more customers, then go broke, file for bankrupcy and have a shocked pikachu face as to how it all went wrong. How close was I?

pretty accurate but a bit dramatized lol

Weird seeing such a push into Korean gaming considering its basically lootboxes and a lack of quality in actual gameplay.

I guess the Korean market is the big fight going under the radar, MS has also made some pushes with Korean franchises too
It's all P2W gatcha crap and predominantly in the MMO space. I stopped playing Korean MMOs long ago.

Bringing in more GAAS?
Yes, bringing in more GAAS, because they are the ones who generate the majority of the gaming revenue.

But NC Soft primarly makes PC MMOs and mobile games, probably the main part of the deal is to ask NC Soft make some PC MMO or mobile game using Sony's IPs, and maybe to adapt some NC Soft IP to cinema, anime or tv shows.

Sony could also help NC Soft get console (exclusive) ports of their NC Soft games, but I see that as very secondary because PS5 could be a too small market for NC Soft.

NC Soft is already making an mmo that will release on console. I participated in the closed beta test for Throne and Liberty on PS5 a couple months ago and it was the smoothest mmo I've ever played on a console. As long as the P2W isn't too crazy for the global version it could do well.

So long as the focus isn't removed from console games and that space then I'm ok. But shifting of focus to other areas can lead to where Microsoft is today in gaming, which isn't great.
It's okay as long as the shift in focus requires new set of development teams. It wouldn't affect what's already there. With that said, Sony is also expanding AAA with China hero project, India and some Korean devs doing AAA.

Sony is expanding into GaaS and mobile while still expanding the AAA non-GaaS games. It just so happen that it takes too long to make AAA games these days that's why we're seeing few output from Sony so far.

He mentioned in a recent interview. With the pandemic he realized that he's too old for that shit so since then refuses to wear a tie, suit etc. And well, he's retired now so he doesn't give a fuck.
Hey, fully respect this, I just didn't know. Perfectly fine and respect to that.

West: we need more minorities in videogames!
Me: 60 percent of the population is overweight so how about some thin people
West: not like that

Not this particular partnership I don't think, the focus is more on non-console platforms like mobile.

Pretty sure there are many thin people in games.

Im sure this partnership dont have to do with just 1 game. They're making a game for PlayStation using a PlayStation I.P to get PlayStation into the Mobile space. I think its the Horizon multiplayer game. PlayStation will help them get their single player game into the PlayStation base and Sony will help them with Anime, Movies, etc.

I don't think it's about just one game, but I do think the focus will be more on helping PlayStation grow on PC and mobile, rather than on helping NCSOFT make single player console games.

Look up Project M and Project LLL from NCSOFT. I have a feeling both games will have timed exclusives for PlayStation. NCSOFT already have their mobile base. Theyre using this partnership to penetrate the AAA console market with the help of PlayStation's base, Brand and advertising.
