Sony holding me hostage, account hacked.

What the fuck. In in complete shock. Not with my account being hacked, but just how fucking dirty and low Sony is as a company.
This morning I woke up to -220$ was used to purchase stuff through PSN by using my PayPal. I immediately call up PayPal and signal unauthorized payments. Within two hours everything was rectified.
I later found out that my Sony ID was changed, and realized that it was sony and not PayPal that was hacked. I call up Sony and...and...they lock me out of account. Can't do shit unless they, get this, tell me to buy 220$ worth of PSN cards, call them back and use the card codes to which they will then unlock my account. He says that he will credit ny Paypal account and that I retransfer that credit to my bank account through PayPal. For some reason i don't believe him at all. The whole thing is completely ludicrous.
What should I do? Help!
I already called them multiple times to no luck.
I called PayPal again just to get their opinion and they said it's the dirtiest things he's ever heard.
It's crazy to me that I'm much more salty at Sony then i am with the shitbag who hacked my account!!

Can you get your call escalated at all? Sounds like the kind of bullshit you need to get someone higher up to sort out at this rate.

Sony ban you for a chargeback. You have to go through Sony first, not PayPal or your bank. It's bullshit, and these threads keep popping up for the same thing. It's about time Sony did something to increase basic security like adding 2FA so people didn't have to do chargebacks in the first place.

Honestly this is terrible. Son'y security and customer service (both online AND via telephone in my experience) is complete garbage.

I hope everything gets sorted out for you, but I'm sure there will be a few more headaches before it does. Whatever you do do not go and buy those cards or add funds to your wallet. That's the most backwards, exploitative thing that they could possibly ask.

That's so bad that it sounds like Sony is trying to scam you. Ridiculous.

It's Sony being Sony.

Nah, it's good old fashioned bullshit policy

I dread the day something may happen to my account.

I know it's BS, but DO NOT do a chargeback if you value your PSN account.

I know this is not a popular opinion, but this no hack. Yes, Sony should implement 2 step auth ASAP, but people should have individual passwords for individual services, and secure passwords. Even if your password is My_PASSWORDISSUPERSECURE_998877, but you use it everywhere, there is a big chance that one of the services will give in and everything else will fall.

every time these threads come up it blows my mind they still don't have 2FA

This, and my memories of the PSN outage/hack are why I didn't go full throttle into PS4 like so many did.

This has happened to two people I know personally, and these stories keep popping up on GAF and Reddit. It seriously sucks. You are gonna be boned out of all your digital and PS+ titles for doing that charge back. 100% ridiculous that this crap is happening and the platform is so adored and rewarded for it.

I like my PS4 just fine, but the general public is being way too forgiving of this stuff.

I've seen these threads too many times now so not only do I have a unique password just for PSN, but I remove all payment details as well. If you get into my account, all you're getting is some free play time on my games.

This is one of the main reasons I've gone xbox this gen. Xbox has 2 factor auth, so it's far less likely that a hack will happen. Customer support also seems more.. supportive. I do have a PS4, but I go physical on it because of stories like yours.

I'm no way buying those cards! It's completely crazy and backwards.
Basically I loose my remaining 6 months worth of PS+, all my purchased digital games, including my 300+ hours in destiny, everything! Unless I of course "pay up".
This also couldn't come at a worse time, need all the money I can get for my upcoming wedding and honeymoon. Like every fucking dime counts.
There's no one higher that can help me, even the guy at Sony, made it sound like, "yeah i know it's BS, but there's no other way" Reading online I may need to get legal involved but I don't have time for this :(

Get your shit together, Sony. Can't we get some gaming journalists to actually press them on these matters? It happens far too often.

BBC's primetime consumer rights programme, Watchdog, has had numerous features on Sony's piss poor customer service over the years now.

OP, are you the friend that is being referred to here?

It's really weird, as I've been able to get refunds on PSN without issue when I've forgotten my PS Plus was on auto-renew and I got charged, even had the money put back in my account. That said, whatever you do, do not request a chargeback or your account will be gone for good.

Yeah ms is pretty good with this. A month ago someone tried loging into my account in Canada, they didn't get in but i changed my stuff anyway. Getting emails a minute after there is activity on your account is a great tool.

Yeah, Sony will give you a refund or two if you ask them first. It's when you do a chargeback, they get mad and take your account from you.

No it's not me.
How am I suppose to know about Sony being total dicks about charge backs. I didn't even know about such things. At first ask I saw was PayPal, PayPal, PayPal.

This happened to me a few years back with MS, I I'd get money back though. If they don't cooperate then complain like hell.

It's right there in the TOS
SIENA reserves the right to deduct from the wallet any fee, penalty or other charge resulting from a Master Account holder's request to the Master Account holder's credit card company or other payment processor to reverse charges relating to a transaction. SIENA reserves the right to deduct from the wallet all bank fees related to transactions made by the Master Account and its associated Sub Accounts, including domestic and international transaction fees. SIENA reserves the right to terminate the Master Account and all Sub Accounts associated with the Master Account for failure to complete transaction payments. In lieu of termination of the Master Account, SIENA may elect to provide a mechanism by which a Master Account may fund the wallet to prevent the Master Account and its associated Sub Accounts from being terminated.

A lot of services have similar verbiage.

Someone has tried to get into my account twice this month, glad I use unique passwords so they can't authorise it via email.

Keep pushing to speak to a higher up OP. I've always ended up getting refunds I wanted in the end.

My account is currently hacked and Sony are doing sweet fuck all about it, but thanks for the advice on what not to do OP. (And I mean that seriously - your actions weren't unjustified at all.)

Fucking assholes (Sony) hitting honest customers with this bullshit.

Seen too many Gaf threads about this. Even one where people were siding with Sony against the dude who bought a PS4 used that Sony bricked.

Why is 2FA taking so long to implement?

(insert 84 years gif)

They're still trying to figure out how to give us a name change feature.

I saw your post in the other thread about the US Vita. That was some serious BS too.

I still don't get it... Why do people go into people's accounts and purchase stuff? Do they expect to keep the account? Before people would do it for FIFA, but the latest FIFA game made it a bit harder to get good value from that.

Over here in the UK, TOS and shit like the EULA do not override legal consumer rights. Threatening Sony with the appropriate legislation and a call to the ombudsman would work in rectifying the situation. I don't think you guys in America are as lucky though.

Murrica is the land of freedom.

that includes freedom for big corporations to fuck over consumers.

See, OP's mistake was going through PayPal first rather than Sony. Like I said earlier, I've been able to get a refund on a 12 month Plus renewal without any hassle. They even put the money back in my bank account rather than my PSN wallet. I remember mentioning not wanting to do a chargeback to the rep and the lady basically said "Ya, they'll ban your account for that".

The latest seems to be Neverwinter because you can transfer the purchased currency over to your account. It was just ported to the PS4.

I'm sorry but if this happened to me I'd pack up my console and sell all of it. To support a company and then have them sort of turn their back on you after being the victim of a hack on their system is unacceptable to me. It's been going on for too damn long with no real resolution.

At this point, I'll never invest anything in Sony digital goods. Hoping the next round of consoles finds Sony on the bottom, as it's terrible having the superior platform tied to such horrible policies and customer service.

I don't care what the TOS says. If it ever wound up in a class action suit, I think Sony would lose.

it's not the refund i'm looking for, paypal took care of it and refund my CC. I didn't lose any money.
It's that sony are locking me out of my account because apparently i had to call them first as to avoid chargebacks, but since I didn't, they lock my account until i pay up.
