Sony introduces "Smart As...." for PSVita

yeaaaaah..You don't know what you are talking about

I actually heard it from one of the guys who work at Gametrailers.com, i didnt see it through PR from Sony. He was asked by another guy at Gametrailers.com who said it was a Smash Bros clone, and he then replied "i guess you can say that if you want to take a shortcut". The biggest difference is that you can only kill people with using specials. So it is more of an arms race to fill up your special meter and then use them. But there is also tactics to this because you have 3 levels of specials, and they all have their own advantage and disadvantage depending on the situation.

sounds like i was right to me but really Dont try and say it something new when it not, Same with this game

not saying its a bad thing just not for me

I dont think that anyone have said that it is something completely new, at least from what i have seen. There is no doubt that Battle Royale is heavily inspired by Smash Bros, but it is not a re-skin of Smash Bros as first claimed. It just looks like that at first glance.

The dynamic of the gameplay has a lot to say. It is similar to compare i.e an arcade racer to a simulation racer. Both games are about driving, but the dynamic/feel in the driving is very different between the two.

so because something's been done, no one should try to do it either/improve upon it?

They can but how many times have those Sony 'copy cat' type titles actually been better or unique compared to what else is on the market? I can't really think of anything and I'm not trying to be mean, but I really can't think of anything.

Depends which you're referring to. ModNation had Play, Create, Share, which worked quite well. PSASBR seems to do a bit different, but it's up in the air if it will be good or not.

Ignoring the "waaah! Sony!" and "Waaah! Nintendo"-ing going on, who is the target audience of this product, and why is it Vita exclusive?

I feel that BurntPork raised a good point: Why not stick it on PSN and make it accessible to all three Sony devices? It'd be covering bases better, and garner more interest that way.

Good question, which I think Metalmurphy addressed well with his response.

The game has Vita specific functions so they exact same game couldn't be on three platforms. And they need the exclusives if they wanna sell consoles, otherwise, what's the point?

I agree. Even if the game could be modified so that it doesn't rely on the Vita touch/tilt functions so much (and some of the activities probably could), one of the points here is that the Vita needs exclusive games that you aren't going to get on the other systems.

If they put the game out on PS3 as well, then you'd have detractors coming in here shouting how "the Vita can't get any exclusives" and "everything's a port" and "no need to play the game on a portable when I can just play it on a home console instead".

On a related note, I'm amazed how many people here are up in arms about how Sony should dare to release any kind of educational game. For the last 6 years, we heard constant hornblowing from Nintendo fans about the runaway success of the DS, and catering to expanded markets, and "blue ocean strategy". At the same time, they lambasted Sony, casting them as narrow-sighted for not doing anything similar to appeal to casual gamers and jaded gamers. So Sony finally decides they want to make an entry in this genre, and people are still finding excuses to complain about it? I tell you, there's just no pleasing some people.

On top of my head:

Killzone 2 with Warzone mode. Instead of just having the standard and seperate modes like team death match, capture the flag and domination, Killzone 2's Warzone mode have all these things in one single match.

MAG, with 256 players at the same time.

The Gran Turismo games are pretty much a benchmark for console driving simulators.

Little Big Planet and Modnation Racers. Dont think i have to say much about this. Creating your own stuff is not something completely new of course, but it is definitelly not standard in these genres.

Infamous 2, there you could create your own missions and share them with others.

All Uncharted and God of War games are top-tier in their genre, in my opinion.

And then you have all the more unique stuff like Journey, Flower and Flow etc..

There are probably more things, but these are what i remember right now.

Yeah, they've definitely had some that are good successes. I mean in general I look at things like Home and Move and wonder what Sony was planning to do? I mean Move is basically left to die despite it having potential, Home I think hasn't really even taken off much.

I feel like they try to do what everyone else is doing instead of focusing on something they can do really well in.

Heh, it's always packed to the brim with people and makes a healthy amount of money, i think.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the post says it's being produced by XDev Europe. The function of XDev is to publish games from external independent studios. So yeah, they're publishing the game, but Sony themselves isn't even making the game. Does that still mean Sony needs to be attacked for being copy cats? You people are absurd.

I like the implication that no one's allowed to make Blue Ocean software because Nintendo "Invented" it.

Yeah, this is pretty much a real-life "Simpsons Did It!" moment.

Edit: And then it turns out it's not even a Sony game? Never change Nintendo fans.

What an embarrasing thread

fucking hell

What's up with this thread?

Where were the complaints when Nintendo was copying Sony with Galaxy and NSMBWii.

I wouldn't say they aren't allowed to create similar titles, however I think Sony should do more than they usually do, as I feel like the similar titles don't do enough to stand above what's on the market. It should be encouraged for companies to be competitive and make similar titles, however like I mentioned above I haven't really seen examples to me that feel like they've improved upon what's already on the market or do enough to differentiate themselves.

As someone already mentioned, there are a few examples like the Media Molecule titles - but the others to me don't really feel like they do enough to be different or 'better'.

Publishers like Sony commission independent devs to make games for them all the time. Sony did a lot of it early in the PS3's life with stuff like Lair.

Doesn't seem like we really know enough info at the moment which elevates the hilarity level in this thread even higher. Especially the couple of posters who made post after post defending Sony's honor when they didn't even need to!

Lol was going to be that guy that everybody jumps at and call them out on brain training... but i'm a million posts too late.

It can still be fun, that's what matters... but they have no shame lol.

I don't think we know that yet, whether Sony is making the game or not together with another studio. XDev is much more than just a publisher. XDev is part of Sony Liverpool and aside from publishing and marketing games, they actually provide full game production, project management and game design support. So it's likely they are making the game in conjunction with another studio, but the original idea might not come from Sony themselves, but the blog post doesn't say. What we do know is the game's assistant producer is from SCEA.

I don't care either way, the more games for Vita, the better.

At least it's a type of game that will excel on a handheld, and not just a console port. I can imagine this being very entertaining on the go.

Although the "1, 2, 3, Go!" thing looks like it'll get old after the second time.

So I'm thinking....

Sony fanboys are becoming more like Nintendo fanboys?

Is that how a controversy like this happens?

....Should have just called it Smart Ass.

A game being made in Europe probably has roughly 0 bearing on an Ape Escape game which would be made in Japan.

Sony doesn't have an unlimited budget for funding game development. Wasting money and things like a Brain Age rip off certainly has some bearing on other potential game projects...

Every dollar Sony wasted on this POS is a dollar that could have funded an Ape Escape game for the Vita....

That is absolutely fucking right. :/

Original Sony is Best Sony. This is neither original nor best.

Why does nintendo fanboys come to every sony game thread and trying to manipulate it as copy cat?

I mean, really.

Really, I hate all you fucking fanboys. Bickering, bitching, and bullshit is the only thing they are good for. (Not directed at you lol)

This project sucks ass, just as much as Ono Training or whatever from Nintendo. But, I'm not the target audience for this stuff so whatever.

I know I'm latte to this but...

Wasn't Smart As announced during the NGP January reveal, or at least the following E3? Why are we so pissed about it now, did something change?

But SCEE and SCEJ operate almost completely independently from one another. Not making this would just mean making a different game in SCEE, probably.

Nothing changed, you are right, Nintendo fans just forgot about it and moved on, but now they remembered the game's existence (you know, since the care so much about Sony) and are making their second wave of attack.

I would also like to say that all this rage and argument over a simple minigame/brain training game is pretty laughable.

I am surprised there hasen't been a huge attack against Soul Sacrifice yet

They probably haven't been in the thread since it doesn't have such a curious title like "Smart as..." which most will see it as Smart Ass (and that's the intention) but now that you've mentioned it, we might see a swarm of them going there *shakes fist at you*

This is GAF.

Anyway, this game is clearly inspired by Brain Age. That doesn't make it a clone, it doesn't look like a clone, and I don't really understand why some people are so offended by its existence.

Soul Sacrifice looks like a game that Vita owners would actually buy. Smart As looks like something created based on a marketing dept. meeting and is a complete waste of resources.

Yes, it's inspired by Brain Age. Who gives a shit? By now it's been imitated by so many that you could call the brain training game concept a genre. It's not something that Nintendo have any exclusive rights to. As always, competition breeds innovation. If no-one else produced these games, there'd be less incentive for Nintendo to greatly improve on the formula in their following games, like Demon Training. Furthermore, any innovations other developers introduce to the formula can become standardised and eventually end up being used by Nintendo, too. That's how it works.
The same applies for All Stars Battle Royale.
- meh, Nintendo did it first.
but there are products with same idea before th-..
- meh, Nintendo did it better.
Nintendo has "copied" a lot of PC casual games, and just because they weren't "as popular" doesn't mean they get a free pass.
What? I remember tons of people going gaga for those on PC in the late 90s. Those were some of the very early mobile phone games that most people used to play as well. So DS wasn't the only one that made it "popular", and what does that mean really? They still "copied" the idea from numerous PC games that came before them.
...such as? As I understand it, Brain Training was quite a revolutionary piece of software. Nintendo had to work hard to convince Japanese retailers to carry it because it was an unproven concept, but on release it became a sleeper phenomenon.
For all the claims in this thread that other games in this genre predate Brain Training, I've yet to see one named.
This. The Incredible Machine started a whole new audience of these puzzle games as well.
Brain Training is really nothing like The Incredible Machine.
What? The move IS a stick with a ball, and the principle of how it works is exactly the same as what's in that video. It's the final version of what you are seeing there.
This is a bit disingenuous. The device in that video would not be able to control Sports Champions, or an FPS. Move is based on that technology, but its design evolution to the final form does appear to have been inspired by the Wii remote.

It's a game with a series of puzzles that make you use ur brain. It's in the same genre. Its not the exact same formula but i only mentioned it because it was a really successful one.

Why? Because of the motion sensors? They've existed in controllers long before the Wii. Did you miss the part where he was controlling weapons ala Sports Champions btw? The core of the move is whats in that video. The motion sensors are to the move what wii motion plus is to the wand. Unless you wanna imply sony copied that too.
