Sony opens sign-up for the next PS4 system software beta

Chances are that he know people in the know & one of them might have just told him a few bs stories. that doesn't mean he don't have inside info, in fact the some of the stuff could have been true at one point but got held back & changed after the info leaked.

Could be. Sometimes even the most reliable get stuff wrong. It seems companies may even change stuff specifically to avoid validating leakers(792p, IMO). Tidux has gotten some things right in the past, but it seems a whooooooole lot more wrong of late.

what made you hate Buuhan?

This is a neat feature, but I still don't see why there's no photo/video/music area like there was on PS3. I could put in my usb and upload my music to the ps3 and listen to it from there, it's so incredibly basic I wonder why every feature has to be behind some sort of app.

But you can still hook up a USB and listening to your music you just can't save it to your PS4. I guess the apps give you more choices instead of just using the simple OS media player, now you have the Media Player , Plex & PlayMemories Online that can play your media files.

4.0 probably whenever VR launches?
Everything depends on HTML5 <video> MSE EME and C-ENC format for encryption. ooVoo comes after it's in the browser, the rest follow in no order that I can determine over a very short time period compared to how long we have been waiting (since 2010).

1) Plans are for VR devices to display 3D TV.
2) UHD Blu-ray and digital bridge proposed by Sony-Panasonic-Fox uses the same standards as UHD TV and gets the industry ready for 4K TV.
2a) Skipping over DLNA 2 which should have launched in 2014 and is now outdated, Vidipath DLNA 3 uses the same standards the digital bridge and UHD IPTV uses
2b) DLNA 4 launches sometime in 2016 and is required for 1080P and IPV6 ** Sony may be waiting for this **
3) UHD TV is launching 2016 (tuners needed for older 4K TVs Network tuners?)
4) Korea plans to have UHD broadcasting Feb 2017 and to broadcast the Olympics Feb 2018
5) Likely the FCC will accelerate the adoption of UHD TV (ATSC 3)
6) Cell phones are likely going to be mandated to support ATSC 3 for Emergency alerts.
7) We are likely to get Antenna TV gateway/DVR boxes to support ATSC 3 in the home. (Like NASNE)
8) 2018 Cable TV can have DSS so no cable box needed and the mandated FCC/DSTAC STB for Cable TV is a reality.

The world wide 4K TV that the US calls ATSC 3 has the main screen as a web page using the C-ENC format for HTML5 <video>MSE EME delivery (page 6 and 18). ATSC 2 is just using a web page for XTV which requires an overlay. Both ATSC 2 and 3 have DRM beyond the copy-no copy flag which is a first for broadcast TV. Commercial launch for ATSC 3 2016 page 34.

Several Korean broadcasters announced this week that they will begin transmitting ATSC 3.0 OTA broadcasts starting in February 2017. The news comes after the two broadcast networks, SBS and MBC&#8212;in conjunction with LG Electronics, ETRI and several equipment vendors&#8212;announced the first successful live end-to-end ATSC 3.0 broadcast in the country, and represents perhaps the best confirmation yet that the ATSC 3.0 next generation broadcast standard is on schedule to be completed within the next 12 months.
Korea wants to broadcast the Olympics in 4K Feb 2018.

The FCC has sold so much TV bandwidth that it's going to be difficult to have both the old standard and new standard supporting the same channels at the same time. As a result of this and Cell phones being able to reliably and robustly receive TV in a moving car, a PUSH for ATSC 3 and a quicker than normal phasing out of the older incompatible standards will happen (this in multiple papers). This may be alleviated with STBs like the PS4 and XB1 connected to Network tuners able to downscale 4K and receive multiple 1080P channels in a HEVC container. This downscaling and HEVC multi-view codec which is also required for 3D is part of the UHD Digital bridge and mentioned in Playready ND papers. The UHD TV signal is already IPTV with the C-ENC format which is used by Playready and HTML5 <video> MSE EME.

With ATSC 3.0, you connect your new ~$250 household gateway/router that probably includes some storage and DVR features to that OTA antenna. Now every IP device in your home&#8217;s LAN coverage area has access to everything OTA and Internet (including any &#8220;walled garden&#8221; of content your ISP might supply)

There is more of a chance that the FCC will move to expedite the transition to ATSC 3.0 as a way to ease the impact of the present-day spectrum reallocation process and the conversion of some UHF TV channels to wireless use.

Sinclair Envisions ATSC 3.0 Royalty Windfall
If the proposed next-gen TV transmission standard is adopted, Sinclair Broadcast Group stands to profit from its contribution of intellectual property, the company's execs say. "You should assume that anybody who is going to watch television, whether it is on virtual reality devices, cars, machines, phones, pads, TV sets is going to [be using] our technology," said CEO David Smith.
3D is coming to 4k TV (Virtual Reality devices), Phones, Pads, cars...it's already in the planning stages as seen in the underlying transport mechanism and W3C extensions.

oh man

none of this has anything to do with firmware version numbers, which is what was being talked about.

There are a ton of media features coming in a short time which compresses Firmware updates over the next year or so. Everything has been delayed waiting on HTML5 <video> MSE EME. When that ships APPs get updated and can use the PS4 software stack. HEVC is another milestone (DLNA 3 with HEVC used for IPTV, Playready ND another (DLNA 4) and this also supports most of what's needed for the Digital bridge and 4K TV.

LOL. I don't think Jeff even knows what he is writing himself ;)

Predicted Sony Patch notes

Firmware 3.5

“System software stability during use of some features has been improved.”

What is it about Jeffs brand of crazy that once one set of nonsense doesnt happen, he jumps to another set?

What on earth do emergency broadcasts at korea 2018 have to do with PS4 firmware? Wut?

Jeff rigby is a crazy person. Have you seen his threads? It's fucking madness lol.

They are things of beauty.

I'm sure their stuffed with insightful nuggets and it's just my poor comprehension, they just make me feel like I'm Raiden and Jeff is Colonel Campbell

*Rumour goes round Sony is adding more than stability

don't mess with the jeff, he might be really technical, and I have no idea what it will all mean, but he seems to know his stuff :)

Hip hop gamer says he has heard some news. Apparantly what he is hearing is ps4 should get live video broadcasting, and a google hang out type podcast broadcasting for ps4 firmware.
Just a rumor.

So live with playstation?

Still, it would be in keeping with what Sony have been doing so far. I would expect yet another update that is heavy on social features and light on everything else.

More like Video conferencing that can also be live streamed like the playroom

They will most likely also use background removal & AR masks & so on to make it more accessible.

It would be disappointing if that's the case with this update. Not that I really expect Sony to do something else with the update.

Gee, I start on NeoGAF with PS3 Web Browser Discussion - big upgrade rumoured for long time, but no concrete news and in this thread mention that HTML5 <video> MSE EME is going to be used by ALL 4 K media delivery schemes with TV a Web Page.

I don't know how I can be more clear. The threads I start show the hardware necessary to support IPTV power modes, Codecs, DRM and how they will be used are part of this. In 2011 I stated that 4K is coming sooner that you might expect, HTML5 would be used for the UI and Low power modes for media are a requirement.

I started the thread: Game Consoles to replace Cable boxes and the connected home starts in 2014. I was wrong about the date but Sony just purchased a company for $212 million that has the IP for 4G radios which articles say can be used for IoT and I have pointed out that the Modulation scheme for Cell, 4k TV and IoT will be 4G. IoT requires IPV6 which is in DLNA 4 and that is part of the Vidipath specs. IPV6 also reduces Latency for Internet games and makes it easier for ooVoo to connect from device to device through firewalls and eliminates the need for an internal NAT.

For Emergency broadcasts in the US the FCC will likely mandate that Cell phones support ATSC 3. ooVoo is already on Cell phones so just about every feature on Cell Phones will be in your living room in your PS4 with the Cell phone able to play PS4 games remotely. Again I don't know how I can be clearer. ooVoo uses RTC which is a collection of native libraries one of which is used for HTML5 <video>. ooVoo as described in the CES video has features that require it to be integrated in the PS4 OS at a low level. So I state that ooVoo won't come until HTML5 <video> MSE EME is in the browser. One implies the other.

Edit: RTC is still a working draft so likely no ooVoo.
Video Plus depth for 3D is also part of the RTC standards.

For a PS4 to interface with IoT using 4G requires a 4G radio. For the PS4 to receive UHD TV requires a 4G tuner either USB or Network tuner. With such a radio a PS4 could also connect to the Cell network providing Internet for remote locations.

You believe that you are making it as simplistic as possible but your 'dumbed' down version is full of things and acronyms that most people have no idea of what they mean or do. You will not be able to explain it so that everyone can understand it without the word........

MAGIC

Yes, magic....just start popping that bad boy in what you write. Replace a couple of acronyms with it and you'll have a lot less people replying to you completely confused. Sadly I'm actually being serious lol

Well video party chat is well overdue so I hope it's true.

Would be neat to have a movable video overlay of the other person(s) during games. e.g. like Zen Pinball did on PS3.
At the very least for Share-Play.

I can imagine it's going to allow you to play a game and have a video window from each person in your party displayed on screen for streaming.

So many possibilities, but, let's really get out there...what does the 'ol crystal ball say about CD playback? I'll believe in all of the rest once Sony implements that.
