Let’s see if this news gets your Spidey-sense tingling.

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie ahead full bore and Warner Bros. actively developing the expansion of the DC universe, Sony Pictures is looking to create their own mini-universe centered around Spider-Man. Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal spoke today and revealed they have plans to create a number of new films based on “new heroes and villains” from the Spider-Man universe.

We’ve previously speculated that the ‘Amazing Spider-Man‘ films have been heading towards a massive Sinister Six appearance, but there could be even bigger plans. According to The Wrap, while speaking to investors about the future of Sony Pictures, Pascal said:

We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains.

There have been hints that ‘Amazing Spider-Man 4‘ actually isn’t a fourth film in the traditional sense and is instead the start of a new mythology, perhaps following one of the film’s villains, or a new hero entirely. ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ director Marc Webb said at Comic-Con, “there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film” and star Andrew Garfield has said that he is only contracted through the three ‘Spider-Man’ movies.

Previously, Sony developed a Venom spinoff with ‘Chronicle’ director Josh Trank, but that project stalled when Trank left to direct ‘Fantastic Four‘ at Fox. Beyond that, what other characters could Sony develop into standalone films?

It’s unclear what character rights Sony has based on their complex Marvel contracts, but we have to think that Black Cat is in the mix. Morbius, the vampiric superhero, also seems like a decent bet. Beyond that, we’re at a loss – Spider-Man’s universe doesn’t have much else in the way of heroes. (Ms. Marvel once dated Spider-Man, but we’re pretty sure Marvel still retains the rights to her character on film.)

What we’re really hoping will happen is that as Sony builds up the Spider-Man universe, they are able to work out some kind of agreement with Marvel and we somehow see Spider-Man teaming up with The Avengers (can you imagine if Spidey showed up as a secret post-credits scene in ‘The Avengers 3′?).

What do you think? Are you excited for a whole universe of ‘Spider-Man’ films? What other characters would you like to see spunoff?

Scarlet Spider movie is go?

Expand it right into Disney/Marvel already.

*grouse*

And Fox, hand over Fantastic Four and X-Men while we're at it.

And I want a pony too.

They can do crossovers without giving up the licenses. Given how much money there is in seeing Spider-Man in an Avengers movie, I'm sure there's enough to compensate Sony for a 20-40 minutes of Spidey action.

I like that Spider-Man and Xmen are separate from avengers films. It would be a huge clusterfuck if it was all connected. Especially Xmen.
If there's mutants everywhere, where the fuck were they during all the battles?

Spider-Man also has a shitload of characters to work with, so I like Sonys idea.

This is going to end horribly. SONY needs a good public shaming when it comes to their marvel license.

They need it done hard. Need to just give up already.

Black Cat seems like a likely choice. Venom as the anti hero character. Kraven needs to appear either as a Spidey villain or his own movie.

Gotta get that comic book movie money.

Marvel Studios showed how it could be done after both Fox and Sony almost ruined those franchises with X3 and Spiderman 3.

Maximum Carnage or GTFO.

They'll never do it, but I'd come rainbows for a week if they announced a Spider-Man Noir or Spider-Man 2099 film.

also, where's my Spider-Ham movie?

They couldn't ruin it any more than Marvel could with Superior Spider-Man.

I mean, Superior is a gripping science fiction tale of villains brainswapping. The problem is people I just don't care about Otto Octavius.

oh gods they're going to adapt superior spider-man

SpOck has provided the best moments of any Spider-Man comic in two decades. The main book is a bit plodding but some of the stuff other writers are doing in the crossover books is gold. When he teamed up with the younger X-Men time-displaced from the '60s and tried to get them to do a bunch of advanced stuff with their powers? When he spends the entire time he's fighting the Wrecking Crew commenting on how stupid they were every time he tried to work with them? So good.

Pathetic. Patiently awaiting the day Disney's super-lawyers will find a hole in the contract.

Replace "Tesseract" with "film rights" and Loki with Spider-Man.

Venom (the Flash Thompson version, thank you) is the only Spider-Man ancillary character I see as strong enough to support his/her own movie.

In context it works. The stories leading up to it made absolute sense. Otto rambling as Peter is funny and what he does makes a lot of sense (better gadgets, a base of operations, etc.). Forcing his enemies to get stronger is actually causing character development, which should be the focus of storytelling. In some twisted way, Superior Spider-man is very successful.

I just feel really terrible about Peter Parker's treatment, and don't know if movie or TV watchers would enjoy it that much. Unless there was a definite end to it. That would be the hook for me.

Avengers 2
believe

Honestly it would benefit both companies in the end right?

It would benefit Sony more since they're making Spidey movies. But I imagine having Spidey in the Avengers would increase sales but as long as its making 1 billion thats probably not going to happen.

Hopefully by the time Avengers 3 roles around TASM will be making little enough and the MCU will be pulling in enough for Disney to just throw money at Sony until they give in so they can use Spidey to kickstart a possibly post Downey-Jr MCU.

X-Men I don't see going back until Hugh Jackman gets bored of playing Wolverine at least.

Well, it would benefit Sony, and Marvel clearly doesn't want that happening. The ideal situation for Marvel is that the Sony Spiderman films flop and they get the rights back. It probably won't ever happen with or without Marvel's intervention, but they're hardly going to give those films free advertising.

PS4 could suddenly tank and Kaz could sell the license for extra capital

lol

I don't see Spider-Man ever going home, so I guess there's nothing to do but hope Sony gets its shit together :-(

Him and Doom are the only major fixtures that the MCU is missing -- X-Men would be hella hard to integrate unless both start over.

You joke but a low-key superhero comedy set in Spider-Man's apartment would fucking kill, if the script was right.

2ndd. I grew up with videotapes of their cartoon. With the right humor and action, that'd be something fresh. Not sure about the rights tho...

SPIDERMAN & FRIENDS: THE MOVIE as the title would be even better.
