Sony spent just minutes on non-gaming features. How long will MS spend for theirs?

Does it actually matter what happens in the conference if 95% of the system libraries are identical? And both end up with the same number of core games anyway? People get too caught up in "winning" presentations. By all accounts Sony had a pretty good one yesterday and the mainstream press went "meh".

If MS shows 5 core exclusives then spends an hour talking about Kinect, that doesn't invalidate their existence.

Seriously, this. People tend to forget that a presentation is just advertising.

Microsoft doesn't have to fight to win the core gamer. They already won that war. Microsoft's #1 target at their reveal will be Apple - hoping to become the number one "media center" and take over the living room. Gaming's an afterthought.

Yup. And I would LOVE if they do this. Sony focusing on gaming and MS focusing on providing an entertainment hub for my living room. I'd feel better owning both since they'd be providing different experiences. I always felt like a slight sucker owning both the PS3 and 360. The experiences were so similar it barely seemed worth it.

I'm pretty sure MS will talk about integrating Windows 8 and Windows Phone with the next Xbox. Kinect will play as the controller for these things. It will probably be amazing technically but i'm hoping the games will be there. That's all that is important for me.

Wasn't the same said about Sony going into the current gen? Sony tried to tackle the living through hardware for non gamers expecting to already have the core gamer on lock.

The attitude that you own the core gamer seems to be the trend that kills a console. Sega, Nintendo, Sony and maybe now Microsoft.
Good point, but MS won the core gamer with Xbox Live, a service, not by showing games. IMO, at least. Though I agree that assumptions like that are real killers in this business.

75% will be about motion gaming (kinect) and windows 8 integration and tablets etc. They have been on this road for a while, its becoming a media hub more than a gaming system.

Sony also spent mere minutes on actual gameplay. If Microsoft shows real, actual games being played, they'll already be miles ahead of Sony.

Did we watch the same conference? I saw a heavy focus on social aspects. They even posted to facebook in the middle of the show. If you just mean they ignored video services, then sure...

You're right, but even mentioning Kinect invalidates their existence for a large portion of GAF. regardless of whether they show a large number of new core IPs, the mere mention of Kinect will see a large section of GAF proclaim the conference/reveal as a failure.

Nintendo doesnt have to worry, they have gamers because of SNES...uh..er

Sony is too huge to not dominate with PS3 because of PS2...um..well

Apples and oranges. There's enough users married to XBL to give them some security. Also they have the money and resources to satisfy everyone.

Wishful speculation of Durango's demise aside, MS go into the next gen sitting comfortably while it's make or break for Sony. Why else would they jump the gun with the console reveal that never was?

I imagine that MS will spend the majority of their conference on non gaming features and services. That's likely going to be the main focus for them for nextbox.

They also showed a bunch of guys jumping around waving waggle sticks for about 10 minutes. And then people complain that Kinect 2 might be shown. LOL.

I feel like from the hardware perspective the Sony conference was by and large a best-case scenario. They brought out Mark Cerny to talk about GDDR5 RAM, Teraflops, pipelines, processor architectures, etc. Once they established the PS4's tech credentials THEN they went into the social stuff.

My concern is the next XBox is going to be more Skittles, crazy eyed clapping, and arm flapping goonery.

I see Microsoft coming out like Sony with a gaming focused reveal. Get the core to like the machine to create hype then over the year flush out the features the core won't be so ecstatic for.

Keep the bombas to a minimum in each event to maintain hype. Sony will do it as I think Microsoft will.

Damn it. Bring Cliff Blesinski out as your Senior Hardware Advisor or something relatedrelated and have him go to town explaining how they built the system.

For certain genres like fighting games, video sharing is huge.

It seems to me like video sharing is growing pretty quickly. Just go on ustream or twitch.tv, hell even youtube has thousands of uploaded videos of people playing games. If it's well implemented and easy to use I think there will be a lot of people using the service who typically wouldn't do that sort of thing.

At this point I think it would be a wise idea for Microsoft to play up the entertainment aspects.

Even if they completely matched Sony on all the gaming-related announcements, it's not going to be quite as impressive hearing about that stuff/seeing it demoed the second time around. The reaction will just be "Sony already showed this in February"..

They need to announce new stuff.

They also showed a bunch of guys jumping around waving waggle sticks for about 10 minutes. And then people complain that Kinect 2 might be shown. LOL.

Warped perception in full effect? People complaining about Kinect for the sake of complaining about Kinect? Or perhaps more nefarious intentions with people who have no interest in the console stirring the pot with any and all negative aspects about the console?

It's a veritable feast of options to choose from!

80% will be be about kinect and social gaming.

This would be my prediction as well. I think it's pretty clear that Sony will be the most "core" game focused of the two.

Everything we've heard so far leads me to believe they want to be a multimedia powerhouse, using the Xbox as a launching pad for their various first and third party services. I hope MS focuses on games as much as Sony, but I'm keeping my expectations low until they reveal their plans.

I think focusing on media could be a good idea for MS, as it could potentially differentiate them from the competition if the public's conception of their new console is that it's a more versatile media experience.

Please elaborate.

How about I don't personally think Microsoft is going to spend 80% of their Xbox 720 reveal on Kinect and Social Gaming.

If it ends up being around two hours like Sony's that would be over a hour and a half on Kinect and Social gaming....

Personally I think most of the reveal is going to be 3rd party displays and probably some of the same stuff we've seen at the PS4 reveal.

Microsoft needs an event before E3 otherwise their conference could really damage them greatly.

This.

MS simply cannot let Sony go unchallenged for the next 4 months.

Did you see the amount of "I'm so glad we can finally talk about this stuff" comments came out of yesterday's conference?

If MS doesn't announce/unveil soon, all that excited next gen talk will be isolated to PS4... and unless MS is doing something radically different with NextBox (i.e. that whole "we are considered a different market now and not directly competing (with PS4)" crap like Nintendo did with the Wii), I can't imagine they like Sony getting sole possession of that spotlight.

I really have no idea how MS will go after this new gen.

Sony also spent mere minutes on actual gameplay. If Microsoft shows real, actual games being played, they'll already be miles ahead of Sony.
Not only that but what little gameplay we did see was just graphical touch-ups of games that play identically on existing platforms.
I saw a bunch of non-interactive in-engine cinema sequences, minimal demonstration of improved enemy AI...

When DriveClub was debuted with that "racing in teams" focus, I was engaged and curious to see how a team-based driving game would play. Instead they didn't show anything that would illustrate that, showed off a bunch of undeniably impressive eye candy graphic shots and made it seem like it cribbed the Call of Duty leveling system so idiots in your clan/club/team can contribute just as well as skilled gamers.

We saw more footage of people sharing videos of themselves playing games during Sony's conference than actually playing said games. Watch_Dogs showcased the most impressive gameplay and it'll be out for X360/PS3 this year.

Microsoft can devote a full two-thirds of their conference to non-gaming... and if they spend that last third showing actual advances in gameplay that would motivate someone to say "I have to buy a Durango in order to get this game experience in my home... because I can't get it anywhere else" they'll have done a better job.

Funny how we don't have a ton of gifs from that media molecule part of the conference. PS move dancing and wii music clones are for the core now?

I feel Microsoft would be in a better position if they spend more time on the media and non gaming aspects of the next xbox. Just like what Nintendo did with the wii they can gain a bigger non gamer audience by showing the media aspects. I am looking forward to the next xbox specifically for its media aspects and its integration with windows phone and their wndows operating systems.

I am not a big fan of fps but I do watch a lot of movies and have a lot of Microsoft products.

People who have the 360 will buy the 720 and people with the ps3 will buy the ps4. That's pretty much a given.

Microsoft can get a big boost from non hardcore gamers by spending a decent amount on its non gamer features.

Sony also spent mere minutes on actual gameplay. If Microsoft shows real, actual games being played, they'll already be miles ahead of Sony.

microsoft is good with that but it's the actual content. will we want what they show or not. but i'm hoping for some epic kinect style gameplay. Needs more potential gif material.

They will probably focus on a few big titles like call of duty, new halo, possibly a new ip that will be their attempt to keep the core gamer. There are a lot of people for whom this would be satisfying enough, I am not one of them

This isn't a given at all.
Not only that but a lot of us that owned BOTH systems this gen will be making a decision on which system to buy first.
Many of us won't be buying both at the same time.
A lot of us probably won't even be buying EITHER system at launch given what we've been shown thus far.

Just because we're active on GAF and defined as "hardcore gamers" doesn't mean we're sheep that will always sell out for a new console before it even has any killer apps out just because it's the "new hotness". Hell, in this era I can just watch vids online of any game and be as well-versed in talking about the experience of playing it as anyone else here.

I think you guys are wrong and that the focus will be games for the majority of time. All that extra social/family friendly crap is more important down the road, and MS is going to want to appeal to 'core gamers' first and foremost.

There is a somewhat large thread discussing that part of the reveal conference, I assume the euphoria of the reveal is still fresh, so those gifs won't be available until later, if ever.

I fully expect the Microsoft reveal thread to be home to a large number of Kinect gifs moments after its revealed however.

Too long. The press release from a week ago or so focused on xbox providing "premium content."

Sony specifically said that the focus is back on the gamer, not necessary the living room as a whole. It'll be interesting to see the direction Microsoft heads.

Joke all you want, but Sony's plan to download games you might like to entice a purchase is every bit as intrusive.

Both companies want to make money.
Sounds like Directv's genie feature to record shows to your DVR they think you might like, you can turn it off there, probably can on the PS4 too.

Unlike the E3 kinect Gifs which are almost instantaneous?
