Sony Unveils New Development Strategy For PSP

So now everything is going to have "an appstore" this is getting insane. isnt there a blackberry appstore, nokia appstore, android appstore, microsoft appstore, adobe airstore, psp appstore,

I guess we can never have too many tower defense replicates and bejeweleds.

Think before you type. Most apps that make a smart phone what it is would be horrendous on a PSP.

Haven't you got the memo? Everything competes directly and has to compete directly with the iPhone: the DSi, regular DSs, regular PSPs, toothbrushes, the PSPGo, you name it.

why exactly? Smart phones were there long before touch screen interfaces.

And WiFi is very common in USA, while in Europe, dataplans for 3G are shit expensive anyway.

So all those games are going to be available both digitally and physically KAz? yeah right.

.

so you want $5 PSN game on UMD? Why?

You will be able to download it to PSP-1000 as well...

All retail releases will get a PSN release. Not the other way around.

I know, i'm just messing with KAz statement at E3. It was really amusing for him to tell it the way he did because he made it sound like EVERY PSP game will be sold both retail and digital. We all know it's bull. ;)

Now they just need to do the same for the PS3.

I think that's just the regular PSN store..

Course, the barrier to development is still a bit higher..still have concept approval, kits are that bit more expensive. But if you get a kit and what-not you can self-publish on the psn.

Yes, and they had keyboards

Sweet, Fieldrunners for PSP! I'll double dip, that game is fun.

I like this new direction Sony is taking, I hope it pays off.

In case people didn't know PSP SLIM+16GB memory card = 169$+80$ = 250$ right now
I'll take PSPGO and add another 32GB memory = 48GB of PS1/PSP Games ! "I'll get one when custom firmware become available

PSP Go is actually cheap with extras like AppStore/Bluetooth/more portable/better screen

People in this thread know that all other PSP's will be able to play these apps and games right? Bringing the PSP Go and it's pricepoint into this thread is a bit irrelevant.
Its called bitching in every PSP thread even when they dont have an interest in the new machine.

Old news, but good to see the details confirmed.

I don't want to double dip on Fieldrunners, I wouldn't want to play a Tower defence game without a touchscreen, but there are many other games on the iPhone that would work well on the PSP. Hopefully more get ported over.

Great, looks like the Dwight Schrute volunteer deputy forces have already tried to ruin the thread with the PSPgo price.

Anyways, I really hope EA gets on board with this. While I don't really have a desire to download a $30-$40 NHL game, you better believe I'd be more likely to buy a $10 NHL arcade type offering. Go ahead and get PopCap to develop a PSP version of Peggle...I don't know..the possibilities are there for the taking.

Platform-holder Sony is aggressively courting developers around the world to work on digitally distributed games for PSP in a bid to grow the software offer on its handheld.

Thank god. Every week the PSP store update is disgraceful. Exclusive smaller downloadable titles is something I've wanted for PSP for a while. I don't want games that were released on PS3 PSN ported over to PSP.

I really don't see what kind of applications would be cool to have on a PSP.

If you had to come up with one, what would that be?

Not to mention you need to have the means to go online to make those apps actually working. And WiFi alone doesn't cut it.

I think a good indication of what we might be getting would come out from looking at the apps homebrew community did for the PSP via the hacked FW. I have never bothered with that stuff so I ask: what are the coolest apps there?

I agree ! They need to bundle a good content service with a cheap WiFi/Cellphone data plan (on-demand or subscription based). Then bring ad hoc network over.

Lets wait and see shall we. Good news nevertheless

Gran Turismo Mobile? Oh, it's out October 1st. Nothing then, I'm fine for next decade. :D :D

sony finally gets it? they should've launched the platform with this, and by now taken an extra step toward open SDK. but let's see how much those devkits will end up costing.

Full July issue of Develop is online now:

http://issuu.com/develop/docs/develop_issue96
inermw.png

Article has profiles of four of the mentioned developers working on stuff for this..mentions Creat will be bringing AlienHavoc, BubbleTrubble and Freekscape. Funtank will bring premium versions of the most popular games from its website, aswell as free 'adver games' for the likes of coca cola etc., that Indian dev mentioned has five unnamed games, and Subatomic will bring a version of Fieldrunners with exclusive new maps, units and weapons...says the games should be about 20MB (aka 'instant download and play'), and that they think they'll be able to bring higher quality service faster with PSP vs iphone, in terms of adding new things as they go etc.

Wow, Sony handled this perfectly. Making it a different section of the Store, having them at really cheap prices, and allowing non-games.

And this has the huge leap over the Apple App Store, because the PSPgo has buttons.

as you can see PSP Go is directly positioned to fight against iphone as the #1 mobile gaming machine and looking at the price of an iphone PSP GO is a steal. You will be able to you skype anyway like already possible.

Oh, gofreak, I don't know who you are, but I love you - you're always posting nice things about Develop, I've noticed over the years. And links ;)

I came on here to post that link too. And these two - it's the feature hosted on our shiny new site:

http://www.develop-online.net/features/550/The-Go-Team

http://www.develop-online.net/features/551/Four-Play

Of course, if people want to read it on Issuu that's fine - there's a feature about Milo/Lionhead AI, a Remedy/Alan Wake Q&A, etc etc. ;)

:D <3 Develop

If you work for them, ask them to get the full scoop on the coding keynote on thursday, for info on the ps motion controller etc.!

Please stop it. Just stop comparing the two. Why are you comparing the cost of a handheld gaming device to a phone? It's like comparing the cost of a house to a car. It just doesn't make sense.

I thought this was pretty much the direction that they were going with the PSP Go to begin with, but to have them snag several "casual game" developers for it is nice to know. Can't wait to see their pricing.

Sony should release 2 PSPGO versions

249$ 16GB PSPGO
299$ 32GB PSPGO

And drop PSP Slim 3000 price to 149$ so everyone's end up happy right? :D

Sounds great 'n all...but this really should have been the push to begin with (when everyone was really paying attention to it) and not part of some desperate 'plan B' to revive a flatlining platform. The price point of the device is going seriously impede any chance for success this might have.

you're thinking about this the wrong way. Think of all this stuff (lack of physical media, online app store, new strategy with dev tools, etc) on the PSPGo as a beta for what's coming with the PSP2.

when that thing launches, all the bugs should be thoroughly ironed out and sony can hit the ground running with it.

Hmmm...no, I don't think that Sony thinks of PSP Go in this way at all. Sure, they want to have a sequel platform down the road (what hardware manufacturer doesn't?), but they are not burning the ton of cash that they are to beta a new platform. This is it for now because this is all they (and all that potential third parties who could pay their fees to them, too) can realistically afford right now. And, IMO, they fucked up again with their hardware pricing. We'll see.

You can't look backwards. What do you want Sony to say.. 'ho-hum, we should have had this from the start, so let's not bother at all'?

Better to do these things late than never. It's one thing you can say about Sony at least..even when their stuff underperforms relative to expectations they still stick by it and try new stuff. It would have been easy to leave the PSP fizzle, software-wise - and it seemed like they were going to do that - until their next round of hardware was ready. But they're not, they're still trying new stuff with it, still 'giving it a go'.

Great article MCF/Develop.

Sony is definitely starting to react correctly... if they want to be serious about the PSP as a media device (and their new media players) they need their own music marketplace to accompany the video... it needs to be much easier to navigate and preferably steal a ZunePass like feature which would be awesome. This "app store" is a step in the right direction, but to prevent me from wanting to use a Zune for my music player, they need to offer me something on the lines of a music marketplace.

It is good of them to push ahead, but, of course, they have a vested interest in making this thing profitable (for once?). They would have been better served with a lower priced unit to push this new strategy in the middle of a global recession and a fuck-ton of entrenched mobile gaming competition.

This is a good step for PSP. It can only do good for it. What is the problem with some of you guys? Forget the price for PSPGo, as this thread is not about that. Eventually price will come down at some point too. And this will work for us who have old PSPs. So wtf?

The Go pricing, particularly in some territories, is steep. But it's worth bearing in mind that there is still a cheaper unit that'll have access to all this DD stuff too.

The whole strategy is definitely about profitability and curbing piracy though, absolutely..the latter in particular is necessary to bring devs back.
