My personal rankings of the MS first party studios.

Teams with multiple AAA teams:
343, Rare, Lionhead

Teams large enough to for one AAA title:
Turn 10, Black Tusk

Teams for AA or XBLA titles:
Leap, Victoria, Good Science, Twisted Pixel, MS Dakota, etc.

343 I think is a HUGE team. Pretty sure they had 343 employees as of March 2013, which is more than Rare and Lionhead.
I think Rare is pretty huge now too, they were already a 3-team studio and in 2010 they opened a new studio with a initial staff of 90 people.

It wouldn't surprise me if they are developing/overseeing 4 or even 5 games at the same time...

Rare has only announced one game, does this mean they may have a core AAA title in development?

Well, MS definitely has significantly stronger studios than Sony does. Sucker Punch aside, I don't see anyone who's developed a game that's been as good as something from Remedy, Capy, or Capcom Vancouver.

I'm thinking most of those games (Don't Starve, Mercenary Kings, Ray's The Dead especially) in Sony's indie list are also on the PC.

Rare are a massive team, and I doubt Kinect Sports requires that much manpower. Which leaves a huge part of the studio working on unknown projects, I'm thinking a big new core IP and a new Kinect IP is what's currently being made over there.

Does anyone else feel like Naughty Dog are Sony's Ace card now? I adore Sucker Punch, Guerilla, Polyphony and SSM, and Ready at Dawn and Bend seem pretty good as well, but none of them have smashed it out of the park like ND have this gen.

ND definitely came into their own this gen that's for sure. SSM is up there too though, and you can't dismiss PD. GT5 was fantastic albeit flawed, but it also managed to decimate all of Sony's other studios sales wise.

This was my reaction too
This made me lol a bit too, Sony is well ahead of MS in the first party department, have been for a few years now. MS is only just now getting their act together with development and have yet to provee themselves until we see these new games.

So for now Sony > MS in first party, although that may change in a year or so. Let's not forget some people have different preferences too in genres.

Agreed they are Sony best team right now. last gen Sony Cambridge was showing big promise too but Sony destroyed them.they could have become SCEE ND.

Talking about wasted potential, why the hell is a studio as big as Sony London (300+ employees) limited to Eye Toy and Home crap?

Wait, Im confused.. Sony first party didnt make Last of us, Uncharted, Killzone, Littlebigplanet, Modnation racers (I loved that game personally), God of War, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, Pixel Junk, Heavy Rain, Beyond two worlds, Rachet and Clank?

I must have missed those on the xbox 360, cause I used to buy multiplats on that system only. God damnit, all that wasted money... :(

I hope that's the case.

In fact I like the idea of Kinect Sports and Family games paying the bills while the rest of Rare is off working on AAA games for the core (and allow the people in each team to switch out so people get to work and learn from both audiences and don't get too bored).

Although after the KI development not being Rare and the last few things out of Rare I kind of have a sinking feeling that they are a Kinect/family only studio now (not that they are bad games just think other studios could handle those games).

I think they've always been one of the best developers in the world. Crash Bandicoot was the mascot of the PS1 after all.

The takeaway that matters greatly to me as a gamer is which first party continues to support their console with a significant release schedule right up to the very end of their generations.

Neither Nintendo or MS did this at all. They start strong and then on the home stretch you find yourself strolling along with more and more tumbleweeds for company.

All three are capable of creating great exclusives. Truth is from the way they've played the second half of the present gen, I actually trust Sony to keep showing up with the heavy hitters long after the other two (see Last of Us et al). This isn't fanboyism (started this gen on 360), this is a respect they have earned from me through sustained effort on their part.

Jak 2 is one the worst games I've ever played. The best developers would never put out such a turd.

I just can't wait for Sony to actually start announcing crap.

There's 20 titles slated for the first year (yeah right, as if they'll all make it), they need to be announced soon.

GamesCOM, TGS and VGA's are gonna be insane this year. Entirely insane.

I personally thought their was a lot of new IP, many if you include multiplatform games too, all the ones I mentioned and Knack, Destiny, TitanFall, The Division, Project SPARK, Mad Max and etc
I would love to see a next gen, super hardware Fire Emblem clone. I would love to see someone make a SRPG who has never made one before and just take a sledgehammer to the old game design philosophy to make something new.

Naughty Dog, SSM, and PD are the Sony heavyweight AAA trifecta. They are the Premiere League.
For Championship, we have MM, Evolution, Quantic Dream, Sucker Punch, which was promoted from League One thanks to excellent infamous 2 and glorious looking second son, and Guerilla, who used to play in the PL with KZ2, but then were relegated to the Championship with KZ3. We'll see how Shadowfall fares.
In League One (third division) we have Zipper Interactive, Lightbox Interactive, and San Diego Studio.
Insomniac was found guilty of match-fixing and banned.

On the Western front, both ND and SSM are pretty much the big two.

- ND have pretty much proven their worth in a huge way. So, SCE will cater to their needs. Also, Uncharted isn't going away, as if it wasn't obvious already. It'll be back. But, they will inevitably return with something else too. Whatever they do, their games are quality, so they're a showcase developer for SCE.

- SSM is SSM. God of War is the biggest action franchise there is, and massive IP for SCE. Now, they also have a new IP in the works to create something different and build another franchise. Considering the level of quality with God of War, this could be pretty amazing.

- GG has talent and whilst Killzone has been successful, it didn't quite explode like Uncharted or God of War. Now, they have the opportunity with their new IP to have a bit of a fresh start and build themselves into a top tier SCE developer. I'm curious to see if they can deliver, but I feel a genre change will do them good. They're big enough to do both FPS and something else.

- Sucker Punch has a lot of expectation on them. Personally, I think they will rise to the occasion this coming generation. Infamous is the most impressive PS4 title I've seen, and they have a very good opportunity with the early showcase to really make an impact. If they do manage to wow with Infamous, then that's just a big bonus because it'll help them with their next project in the future too. They need to knock this out of the park because Infamous can sell a lot this time. I have a good feeling about them though.

- Media Molecule's LBP has basically printed a lot of money for SCE. It's a unique title. So, their new project should hopefully be an interesting experiment at the least.

The other studios also have various things in the works, but the above five, are the ones who got the most attention in the West with their franchises. Some others will show up, and get their opportunity to shine, but I imagine, with ND and SSM dominating at the top, SP, MM and GG stand a good chance of joining them depending on how these next few years go.

On the Japan side:.

- PD print money. They are the Emperor of SCE developers. Expect PS4 GT between the latter half of next year and March 2015. They'll show up earlier this time.

- 'Unannounced JRPG 1' (one I've mentioned before) will end up appearing. And I'm sure this has a good chance to melt the hardcore. It should be successful, at least, on the level of Infamous or Killzone maybe.

- The Last Guardian will finally show up. So, people will finally get this title out of the way. I don't know what will happen with Team Ueda beyond this project, but they have talent, so I imagine they'll be integrated into SCEJ's other teams, or they might modify the team and give a new leader so they can continue with other projects. I really don't know though. It will be interesting.

- 'Unannounced JRPG 2' will be SCE's second attempt at a big game emulating FF. If this comes to fruition, and is successful, then there is a franchise opportunity which can be exploited. Probably the most experimental project as if it bombs, then they'll never touch anything like it again. I don't think it will though. With the advent of FF15, KH3, and the announcement of FF16 sometime between 2014-2015, Japan gamers will be ready for this. The big question mark is whether they can translate some of that success to the West which will obviously be an aim.

I think, right now, is the most exciting time at SCE WWS. Last generation, a lot of effort went into stabilising the developers, building IPs, re-structuring, and getting some real strength on the first party front. There were a lot of things happening. In a way, the effort was so Western focused, that SCEJ was slightly neglected. However, with the foundation there, all that is needed now is for SCE to fine tune things rather than re-vamp them. This means, the potential is there to expand tried and tested teams further, both in SCEA/SCEE and in SCEJ.

Basically, I'd expect even more content from SCE WWS with the PS4 than with the PS3. This will be a great time to be a Playstation owner, both for new IP, sequels to some existing IP, and maybe a few blasts from the past.

ummm...yeeeeeah, about Zipper and Lightbox....yeeeah.

also, if you are going to put PD in the Premiere League...then Sony San Diego needs to be up there to. Both mainly specializes in one genre and both are the best at it. Sales is a different issue.

Sounds quite specific ;)

Nobody has smashed it out of the park like ND has period.

They are arguably the top developers in the world right now.

I'd only put Rockstar on their level in terms of consistent output across multiple franchises

As of right now MS have to prove that they can provide a variety of content every year passed the years near launch. I don't want another 360 situation where it was pretty much just multiplats, Xbla, and the ms juggernaughts. Sony on the other hand have proven again and again that they support their consoles from beginning to the very end with a large variety of content

And holy shit at the verendus bombs.

If The Order is being made by (what I assume) the smaller team at SM, what are the majority of SM working on?

I really hope its a new IP. Whatever game this main team announce is obviously gonna be pretty massive as it's one of Sony's Big Three with ND and Polyphony.

The Order is developed by Ready at Dawn. Pretty sure SSM is just supervising. The big team is working on a new IP (Stig's project).
