SONY vs MS: Who has effectively listened to it's playerbase most this gen?

I think this is roughly accurate, but 343 pulled a god damn miracle in salvaging Halo and making it better than ever before.

In multiplayer maybe but they fucked it up when it comes to story. One thing Ms needs to do which their fanbase has been asking is to expand their studios and start making new IPs. Instead they closed 4 of their studios...

Microsoft had to literally pivot the entire intent of their console as it was hitting production in very little time. Remember how it shipped with the Kinect before too?

Depends on the point that you start considering. If you consider this generation as a whole, then Sony, since they got almost everything right from the word go, while Microsoft was doing everything wrong. Likewise, if you start from 2015, then it would be clearly Microsoft, since they had to get out of the hole they had dug for themselves during 2013. So, yeah. No one right answer for this question.

Well they reversed course on Kinect and always online.

MS listened the most when fans complained.

Sony read our intentions much better without forcing us to complain nearly as much.

It's a wash because they both demonstrated good listening skills in different situations.

As for Nintendo they did what people wanted but considering the initial reactions it was mostly due to doing their own thing instead of listening carefully enough.

Microsoft, because they started at a place where they had to listen to their player base or they'd be dead this gen. Microsoft started at the base of the mountain this gen. Sony was already half way up the mountain on day 1.

Microsoft, but it doesn't excuse the way they started the generation. What a fuckup.

The one that that sells the most? I mean, if not, then why would anyone continue to buy it? Surely no one buys a system from a company that's not listening to what they(market) wants.

Considering the drastic flip in market positions I think it's fairly easily Sony. They have been nearly flawless at reading and responding to the market pretty much since the PS4 reveal.
It's hard to say really.

While I agree with this, MS had done alot better since the XBO launched.

Sony got alot right out the gate, MS as time went on.

Context is everything. There's definitely an argument to be made that Microsoft have been trying to make up for falling behind Sony, in terms of overall sales and exclusives. It is great to see them rolling out so many consumer-friendly features but...

I give it to Sony because of games and having a much more appealing console out of the gate, that continued to get decent improvements post launch.

From the very beginning, Sony artfully avoided the mistakes of Microsoft and Nintendo for that matter, and was able to capitalize on their failings to gain the lead. Sony was able to correctly predict what gamers wanted this generation, and have actively listened to the feedback of gamers and developers to help make the PS4 an instant success. It's arguable that their current lead was basically given to them on a silver platter, but there's no denying Sony has been making a lot of smart calls this gen, and keeps stabilizing their momentum every year.

But you have to give Microsoft credit, they were pretty quick to undo a lot of the initial damage done to the Xbox One pre-launch, and while they're lagging behind Sony in sales and developer support, they've still been able to repair their reputation with gamers pretty quickly, and have been actively trying to make Xbox a much broader platform.

Overall though, I'd say Sony, especially with their current console dominance, relentless momentum, and the universal critical acclaim of their past few E3 showings. If there's one thing you can't deny about Sony with PlayStation, they know how to give the people what they want.

The PS4 is still selling briskly. I mean, it's not an exact science by any means, but I would imagine sales is a pretty good gauge of a company giving consumers what they want, certainly moreso than attributing your own personal wants (psn name change, backwards compatibility) to the entire market.

Sony did it right day 1
But Microsoft has worked really hard to right their wrongs

Problem with MS is that it feels like they aren't offering any variety with their first party offering.
MS is basically doing what their 3rd party partners are... shooters and car games.
MS need Blue Dragon 2 or they will wither and die

Although it seems like Microsoft are listening to consumers the most, its all due to them not listening to them in the first place which caused the whole 180.

So I'd have to say Sony is the one that truly listens, even before the consoles got revealed they heard about people not wanting DRM and they capitalized on it during their conference. People wanted FF7, although it isn't their game nor an exclusive, they knew what their fan base wanted and got it in their conference.

Sony, no contest! They have the games and these are both GAMES consoles. Also 4K blu ray was not a game changer like some people thought, lol.

If you want to play the PS2 games that you purchased digitally last gen, you'll have to play for them again. PS1 backwards compatibility is no where to be seen. You still can't change names on PSN. Increasing Plus price and making it mandatory for online.

Microsoft.

If by just going by how much they listened, then MS, but only because they needed a fire lit under their ass to do anything.

Sony on the other hand accurately judged the market from the get go and didn't need to make drastic changes to their platform and plans in the first place.

Its a wash really

Microsoft.

If they haven't done those things, and yet are still selling boatloads of consoles, how badly do their customers really want them?

Microsoft. But Sony had a better start, has been "good" on most things (especially game delivery), and has had the momentum since...so from a market perspective, it doesn't matter.

That said, I've been beyond impressed with what MS has done with the XB1 since it's release. It's a totally different console.

Microsoft, but only because they started out MUCH lower than Sony in terms of goodwill. To their credit tho, backwards compatibility and 4k blu ray are awesome things I wish Sony would give more of a damn about.

Microsoft: Features

Sony: Games

Pretty much sums it up. Features wise MS has been listening to the market this gen ever since they reversed the always online position, and even after they've corrected course with backwards compatibility and EA Access and Game Pass. Meanwhile, Sony has been knocking it out of the park reading what they're customers want with games like securing Bloodborne after the Souls series broke out, maintaining good relationships with indies and Japanese devs, and having a strong 1st party lineup in general.

I still can't play PS1/PSP games on my PS4, so I can't say Sony has listened to me one bit.

I don't even have an Xbox, but they have a very robust BC program in place. So I have to give it to Microsoft.

At least in regards to the thing I care about most as a customer.

Sony.

Whatever list you can come up with doesn't trump the the always online / used games fiasco that Sony steered clear of that won them the generation.

Microsoft had a lot of room for improvement, so perhaps them?

But Sony helped to revive Shenmue. Honestly that overrides anything else for me, so I have to say Sony.

It's a very individual thing, I suppose.

They've also been knocking it out the park at their PSX weekends. A huge success.
