Sony: We Held PS4 Exclusives Back from E3 2017

They're not really taking their time at Sucker Punch. Remember that Horizon started development (new IP) in 2011 and they showed nothing until E3 2015. While another team did work on Killzone: Shadow Fall, which they showed in 2013, they're a big enough team to do that, while Sucker Punch is not.
Yeah and SP release a game and DLC on the PS4, 3 or 4 years make sense for a new IP.

Not surprising. I think some people are still expecting E3 to be the place where game companies have a blowout and show every game they're ready to show. It's just not the way thr industry operates anymore.

"We didnt announce/show things coming out this year at the biggest gaming event because reasons"

Thread details many such reasons. As has been said, if this was said about anyone other than Sony or Nintendo, your kind of take would likely be valid. But there's a heck of a lot of titles/studios and projects we actually know could have been here, and it seems perfectly valid that Sony decided not to spend those tokens at this time if they felt they didn't need to. There's nothing wrong with being cynical, but wilful ignorance coupled with sarcasm, not such a good look. And "this year" who said that?

Most of Sony's first party have already revealed their game or early in their next game. Some exceptions are:

- Sucker Punch
- Media Molecule
- SCEJ

I reckon most of these announcements will be from third parties.

Manchester Studio
Sony London
Guerilla's 2nd team (Shadowfall team)
Pixelopus

Comes off as sounding like "I'll get you next time Nintendo!!!"

Will these "held back" games release within the next few years? /s

For real though, as much as I love Sony's exclusives I'm slightly annoyed with their long reveal to release windows. It's neat to know that new games are coming, but it's even more neat to actually play them.

Pick your poison new games announcements years away or waiting for said games when they're about a year from release.

People think every e3 is about dropping bombs.. not every single year is a e32015-16 moment.

Not surprising at all. They have their own show, PSX, later in the year. Of course they're not going blow everything on E3. No idea why people doubt them it just makes sense.

It boggles my mind how some of you in Gaf complain when Sony announces and shows trailers for games not being released for another 1-1.5 years, when Nintendo puts a dev on camera and says Pokémon is now on development with no trailer or even release window, or just show a scrolling text for Metroid Prime 4 that is the greatest thing ever.

Sony has two major conferences now to pocket reveals for, and the fact that they can cover both with exclusives is outstanding.

I actually do find it funny that just a week ago, the story was that one article that stated Sony's conferences show off stuff we won't play for years and stuff is shown too early.

Now they show 2017/2018 games and it's getting a bad rap.

This thread reads like we're currently in some unprecedented drought for games on PS4 and that there is nothing coming for the rest of the year.

Let me get this straight:

- Microsoft is presenting their new console which is much more powerful than PS4 Pro
- Nintendo first E3 with the Switch, which is sold out everywhere and and is launching two GOTY games this year

And Sony is backing off instead of going full steam ahead?

Please...

I'm shocked some think a Pokémon game being on dev on the switch was a huge revelation.. all I thought was " who expected otherwise?"

I think I made it clear that I prefer the latter! I also don't expect every e3 (or any big event really) to be full of bombshell announcements. It's exciting to speculate about things like that, but I would definitely prefer a focus on games that I can play relatively soon.

Sony has already decided to release their exclusives during their own conference in December instead of at any of the current trade shows.

I actually heard somewhere that PSX gets more online traffic (and reaches out more) than E3, but don't quote me on that. It makes sense though, as the event focuses on less games than E3. I am totally cool with that.

Show more new exclusives that are years away....complain. Decide to spread out exclusive announcements to make the wait more bearable...complain.

Say what you want about their e3 conference but the first half of the year was amazing from first to third party exclusives and it's not slowing down anytime soon. Who gives a fuck about the rest we know more games are coming

The sudden shift in opinion that 'Sony doesn't actually care about E3, everything's being saved for PSX' is both hilarious and terrifying. Literally 72 hours ago, everyone would have agreed that Sony was the marquee star of E3 because they put their biggest games on display, with great surprises year after year.

One weak showing later, and the collective opinion is that Sony is ACTUALLY just holding back for other shows, and that E3 really isn't as relevant as it once was. Despite Sony turning their entire pressed into the a lavish stage display with pyro, live instrumentation, and arial ballet performers.

But yeah, E3 is totally just a bottom-tier show for them this year. PSX will clearly have TLoU gameplay, Gamescom a new Souls title, and Death Stranding gameplay at PAX West.

Nintendo announced 2 big games with one just being a title and another being confirmed for development. I don't think Sony cares lol. They have to save stuff for PSX and VGAs.

Oh boy. In my post in the Sony E3 conference thread I made the comment saying PSX was hurting their E3 show. Guess they feel like PSX is bigger for them, nothing wrong with that, just a bit surprising since all eyes on E3 usually.

Like the way they release their games most of year round, the same applies for announcements naturally.

PSX crowd will go nuts if SP reveal their new IP there.

They should have pulled a Nintendo and just dropped some names to keep the hype train rolling.

I think this year's been a big knock for them and a missed opp.

Sony did the Same with Shenmue in 2015, and people loved. This year Nintendo did this and people loved. Maybe people don't care when the game is released?

Nobody is really saying that.
It's just a fact that they spread announcements out.

TLoU 2 reveal and FFVII remake gameplay reveal was a PSX thing which shows exactly that.

Wasn't used as an E3 bomb this year when they could've.

Seriously what the fuck? PS4 is currently having its best year yet, and their E3 showed us that a steady stream of games will continue to release well into next year.

"We didnt announce/show things coming out this year at the biggest gaming event because reasons"
It's more beneficial to engage in a thought exercise and try to identify new perspectives rather than to dismiss something from the outset in the name of snark.
