Sony's first-party lineup is becoming increasingly stale and predictable

Gonna resurrect this thread when Saros and Wolverine launch to rave reviews and sell millions of copies. GAF continues to humiliate itself with shitty threads like this. According to GAF, Sony's games are boring and shittier than ever but they keep releasing GOTY candidates and their games keep selling millions of copies and driving new milestones in profitability for their gaming division.

Look, I understand people not liking their games, I personally dislike a lot of popular games and genres out there but I don't make the mistake of thinking what I dislike is what others dislike as well and time and time again we keep seeing GAF doing this and being out of touch when reality hits.

They need to take more risks with their games.

I want more 'The Last Guardian', 'Tokyo Jungle', 'Puppeteer', 'Gravity Rush' and 'Siren' games.

But the idiots at Sony decided to off Japan Studios. smh

It's not just gaf and extremely disingenuous to frame it that way

Especially one post after I link to IGN covering the same points

I'm Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

You can disagree, but you're trying to gaslight people if you're suggesting only gaf feels this way

IGN covered a lot of the points I see being mentioned a few months ago

I'm Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

that article's not half bad. the 'grief & revenge' thing is absolutely what sony's recent 'mature' storytelling shift (triggered by last of us' success) primarily consists of. which's weird, because it's not like a number of classic 'grief & revenge' movies (from death wish to john wick) are particularly notable as being examples of mature storytelling. i far preferred sony's previous 'immature storytelling', where 'heroes' (kratos, nate drake, cole macgrath) were understood to be fundamentally superhuman cartoons, & things weren't quite so relentlessly maudlin...

You can find the samething for basically any gaming company. On YouTube you get tons of videos saying Nintendo games are getting stale or they lost the innovation and play it safe

Which is why it would be silly to call those gaf only things as well

That's my entire point, the fact that it's all over the place

Those simply aren't the kind of games people fell in love with their 1st Party for. Imagine if Nintendo started making a bunch of cinematic Sony style games, people would be pissed.

You know how I know this statement is fundamentally false? Nintendo completely changed the entire design of the Legend of Zelda series with Breath of the Wild and it ended up being considered by critics and gamers alike as a game of the generation contender. The fact that they literally copy pasted the Ubisoft open world design, down to the towers for maps, didn't even phase the overall reviews. BotW only got beaten by its sequel, which further strayed from the original Zelda roots by adding imaginative crafting designs.

If Nintendo made a Mario, Zelda, or hell, a Pokémon game in the Sony Cinematic Style, Nintendo fans would probably eat it up.

This is what happens when you have no competition. No urgency to innovate or release games.

Microsoft has moved away from traditional first party releases for the most part and Nintendo is catering to a completely different player base than everyone else.

2 literally helped PlayStation start the burial for Xbox consoles. We all witnessed that moment in real time.
Xbox quickly fixed that and went on to claim that persistent PSN game libraries are what doomed them.
Not being able to sell or get rid of purchased games benefits game studios and permanently keeps users from leaving PSN or Steam.

This is what fanboys wanted so bad. Xbox to die. Well, they are. And sony took its foot off the gas. And is coasting. They own the high end console market. Enjoy.
They took the foot off the gas long before Phil threw in the towel though. And it wasn't fanboys who killed Xbox, it were the completely incapable morons in charge of Xbox.

I like their games.
But they could make more of them. I barely use my PS5 Pro at all, under 10 hours last year.

They did that and nobody bought the games.

The studios then were cancelled and everybody is shocked.
The problem is that Sony just doesn't promote games like that enough. All their third person cinematic action-adventure titles get the full marketing push, while gems like Astro Bot barely get any attention at all. Of course the games with massive marketing campaigns end up selling incredibly well.

I think they got pushed enough, but most people didn't seem to care enough.

They even released games like shadow of the colossus on three different PlayStations and games like the Last Guardian even had a collectors edition

A few ports and special editions are for quick cash, but they don't create real momentum. Even the Spongebob 2020 remake got 2 collector editions, but barely any marketing. Games like God of War, The Last of Us, Horizon, or Spider-Man received marketing pushes in the range of tens of millions. That's a completely different league.

A tired defence that's always thrown out whenever any criticism is levelled at Sony for having mismanaged their studios this gen and their live service push.

I'm convinced by now that Sony could release literally nothing and as long as the profit line keeps going up, they'd have people fervently defending them. "They must be doing something right", after all.

It's in YOUR best interest that Sony stops mismanaging their studios because it means more games in YOUR console. There is literally nothing to gain here by excusing mediocrity.
Just accept the fact that we aren't all as negative as you. I've genuinely enjoyed the games I've played this gen. Could it be better? Yes, of course, we all want more of the good stuff, but then the good stuff is highly subjective and some of you guys need to stop being so judgemental of others.

They fucked up with live service boom and all studios are hurting output because of it now.
Yotei was fantastic. Astrobot was solid. But im dissapointed they wasted bend, bluepoints etc time on shit and now they are gonna go almost all gen with no new projects.

Do you really believe that marketing was the problem with all those games ?

Yes and no. Marketing obviously works, otherwise companies worldwide wouldn't spend around a trillion dollars per year on it. Of course it doesn't make sense to pour massive budgets into small games with limited reach, but when Sony seemingly invests almost nothing, like with their PC ports, i do think that's a reason for weaker sales numbers.

Yea I used to be pc main but after buying the 4090 and how some of these recent games weren't optimized that well I sorta just got bugged by it but yea if I wasn't a platinum hunter I'd absolutely main pc, but yea I sorta never got into the first party only type mentality alot have... Just give me games, there's so many that come out every year it's staggering
PS trophy system is super satisfying. I love the little ping. Much better than Xbox or steam.

Yep, Xbox's line up is way better, absolutely unpredictable.
I'm looking forwarrd to Forza 6 and E-day. Doom was alright. Oblivion remastered is good when it runs. Grounded 2 is a fun game. Indiana Jones is great. Idk, I've really enjoyed copilot gaming's output as of late.

Yea I never got that satisfaction with 1000/1000, I wish Xbox or steam had like a top off trophy like the platinum.

I simply love trophies because despite exploring games fully they always have so many hidden things or if you're not here at certain times you can miss etc.... Trophies really take you around a game, I always feel fully satisfied having that end note of a platinum. Outside of games that are more longstanding that is. But yea I love it.

God of war 2018 was Great. But yes Ragnarok has been creatively destroyed by wokeism.
For me Ragnarok isn't even close to being the worst offender. For me it's Spider-man 2. 2018 Spider-man was an amazing game and I'm not really into Marvel stuff, but I was blown away and consider it to be one of the best games of the PS4 generation. Fast forward to 2023's Spider-man 2 and it all went to shit. They doubled-down on the MJ levels which everybody hated in the original. The main story was so bad (poor Kraven has cancer) and they seemed to focus all their effort on woke propaganda and woke side quests. It was truly disgusting. It was also full of bugs and lacked the polish expected from Insomniac (DEI hires?).

Me and maybe 10 other people bought Puppeteer. Let's put it this way. Sony is a company that loves money. If games like Tokyo Jungle and Gravity Rush sold tens of millions of copies, Sony would still be making these games. The reality is that gamers aren't putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to these games. It's a very vocal minority (me included) who want more of these games, but they simply don't sell. It's like Shenmue 3. People on the internet screamed and begged for Shenmue 3 for years. Then when the game was actually released it came and went like a fart in the wind.

Do you really believe that marketing was the problem with all those games ?

Marketing is kinda overrated when it comes to core gamers. We know what games are coming out. Also, even if they did spend tens of millions on marketing, where would we have seen that anyway? Most of us don't watch live TV anymore. We use adblocks or have YT Premium, and on streaming I almost always get the ad-free tier.

I think they peaked around 2020. I thought TLOU2 was a brilliant game despite its story issues..

What? All they added in was crawling and a jump for TLOU Pt 2.

Everything else is pretty much the same as TLOU 1 gameplay wise and 1 is far superior to 2 in story. So.

Trophy hunting is probably the single biggest reason I have a PS5 at this point.

LMAO.
Xbox's line up is trash, only mid games. Playstation games are way better.

Guys, Herman was right around the corner, ready to surprise you with the Ratchet and Clank expanded universe GaaS and this kind of talking is making him feel bad. Shame.

Is this better?

Edit: or this https://www.windowscentral.com/gami...-60-percent-of-the-q2-top-10-game-sales-spots

i'm not sure why the source really matters since this is pretty much objective numbers

Alinea is not using objective numbers. Sources always matters. Regardless, yes Circana is much better.

You can just Google Xbox games on PlayStation and find endless articles on it. I pulled the first few links. I'm not as familiar with each sources to know which is more popular, but I figured they should all be grounded in the same publicly available reports.

We unironically have a better chance at the next AAAA classic being completely made by AI. In fact, here's how I'd rank it.

Places the next AAAA classic could come from, ranked in order of realistic probability:

Japan
China
Korea
Russian Bloc
AI
Europe
USA
Australia
India
Canada

Sony makes most of its PS money now from mtx and live service games. Which means they don't feel much pressure to rethink their first party lineup. This combined with their focus on DEI has made them increasingly less interesting to me each year.
Thats why i am not buying ps5/pr0 on a promise "its sony so good games in high quantity will come" which i did with ps4 last gen(got it in march 2014 since it was so crazy hard to get local retailers sold it at nasty mark up vs official price, right with ISS).
Trust was broken this gen, and i will only get ps6 to have access to both ps5 and ps6 true exclusives(not on pc either), which means sony didnt make on me(so lost) solid few k usd this gen(previous gen i got tons of multiplats on my trusty ps4, got no ps5 so not this gen).

Sony makes games for the lowest common denominator, same as Nintendo.
Their games are bland and drab by design, because that's what people that don't normally play games are attracted to, initially.

If you you've been playing games for a while, you can already recognize the patterns of every game they release, it's extremely predictable. Some of them can be good and risky but they're the exception.

Third-party is the way to go, if you want something actually new more often.
