Kutaragi, from what I've heard has been one of the staunchest supporters of Blu-Ray. Word on he streets is that he was one of the hardliners during the unification talks.
Which must have played part in his demotion

I wonder how this all came about..... I get the feeling one division pushed hard for Blu Ray, and forced the hand of Kutaragi to put it in the PS3.

I know Cell has been in the works for a good while, anyone have a history of how the current system configuration came to be? WHen was Blu Ray first mentioned alongside the Cell?

Forced the hand of Kutaragi to put Blu-Ray in PS3? :lol

Portelligent has long estimated the real manufacturing cost of Blu-ray drives at $100. Having reverse engineered literally hundreds of consumer electronics components based on fixed and variable COGS estimates, I'm far more inclined to agree with their estimate than something Merrill Lynch based on anecdotal evidence. Besides, restating the price from $100 to $350 three months later looks ridiculously suspect without explanation.

Before I forget, let's make sure MassiveAttack is banned in 4 days, ok?

Yea, it says estimated cost of Blu Ray drive at launch, $100.

Do you really think it will cost that much to put together a Blu Ray by the end of the year? I don't.

Ok...um WHAT???

This is what you said:

Barnaby Jones said:
Depends, when is the PS3 launch as indicated in that chart? $100 for a Blu Ray drive? Maybe it's for 2008?

And I answered your direct question, directly...

Flip the script much?

This post doesn't make sense. Wasn't SSX just pointing out the date of the article?
Another day, another PS3 topic that does nothing more than expose bitter GAF rivalries.

would you like to plea your case

Okay, I've got a theory. Well it's not entirely my theory, but I was thinking along the same lines the other day.

I've been trying to understand why the report has so many basic typing errors and a rather embarrasing mathematical one. The author, Osha, constantly referrs to his colleague Kuriyama throughout the report citing his 'comments yesterday'. Yesterday! Is it not plausible that this report was rushed together in a day to provide advice to its clients based on Kuriyama's comments? It seems that they heard of a delay and needed to write a more substantial report to bolster the claims. Since neither Sony nor their investors play a part in ML's analysis and impact sections, it's fair to assume that the report does not field the interests of Sony. With that in mind, they are at luxury to paint a convincing best case scenario [for the company's and their investors] to provide their clients with a strong case to act upon.

Given that there is no new analysis on any of the component costs, and it even went so far as to copy and paste from the old article, I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest the numbers were not objectivey estimated. They are merely there to support their objective to encourage investors to sell Sony [and/or related] stock.

Doesn't Sony have to go through AACS and the HDMI standard to deliver on the "promise" of 1080p Blu Ray movies out of the box? Maybe I'm just not all that informed of the latest developments but would this be holding manufacturing back?

Highly Doubtful. But thanks for the negativity!

perhaps, but it does pose an interesting question - why exactly was Kutaragi dropped from the board?

It's not something like putting the knives in the fork draw, or eating the last eclair in the shared fridge, so it has to be something?

I know the counter argument is it was a move back to the shop floor, but you know what? A visionary usually likes to have as much control as possible over his own budgets, plans, and interaction with other departments (and hell, dictating your own payrises is always nice)

i'd love to know what happened...

I don't have the link on hand, but theres a report out that states that the AACS Hurdle has been solved (I believe it was reported on Thurday for Friday), not sure about the HDMI Standard "promise" but Kleegamefan has stated that their is no issue with the HDMI standard (if I this is the same issue)

Again, AACS-LA issued an interim AACS license to HD-DVD and Blu-ray groups on Feb. 16th, 2006 so there is no delay for players...

Will you trust me at my word or do I have to dig up the videobusiness.com link myself?

EDIT: ah..what the hell...here ya go:

Your cool though :( . I don't want you to get banned, but what happened with that event?

What I can reveal, if it helps, is that SCEI has been pushing extremely hard for an end of March launch in Japan since E3 2005. The March launch has been communicated and aggressively pushed with their closest development partners (whether they like it or not) all the way through to the beginning of this year. The February surprise has been meant to fall within 3-4 weeks of the Japan launch and everything has been geared towards this since TGS in September.

I have no interest in stirring up the xbot hornet's nest this thread has become but in light of the shit hitting the fan on Reuters, Bloomberg, and the Nikkei and the rather sorrowful consternation this has caused, I've stated something that I know to be a fact. Take it or leave it, it's of little concern to me.

Or horribly right? The thread was so dark and dreary before he came along. And damn, Bish burst into the thread with an energy, dare I say, a sunshine, that I haven't seen since Zach Allen.

My way or the highway has always been his as well as Sony´s moto(with all their property crap), Sony changes and he gets demoted.
Kutaragi was actually quite critical of Sony's use of proprietry technology, DRM and avoidance of standards. Hes a big proponent of embracing standards. With BR it was purely a technological issue.

Theres really no conspiracy. Apart from Kutaragi being openly critical of Sony policies (and curiously Stringer is now doing as KK wanted ages ago) -as above-, he was a frontrunner to the job Stringer now possesses. Like the rest of the board, KK was removed to allow Stringer to implement his changes with little resistance. Standard practice really.

Any HDMI implementation will work with 1080p/60 movies with BR. AACS isn't finalised but they could acquire an interim license like the HD-DVD consortium members who are launching players are.

Obviously waiting for HDMI 1.3 and AACS to be finalised is ideal.

AACS is finalized

Only days after reporting on the potential delay of both next gen DVD formats Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, it seems negotiators have been able to work out an agreement on an interim license for the AACS (Advanced Access Content System) protection software that threatened to deal both formats a costly blow. HD-DVD backers plan to get the format out by late March, while the Blu-Ray camp is looking at launching players some time in May.

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6308373.html

also Sony just released a statement saying the merril lynch info is false and they are still launching in Spring 2006 in Japan.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000080&sid=asbSll.kfEgk&refer=asia

Again, AACS is not finalized...

IN THE MEANTIME, AACS-LA issued an *interim* AACS liscense so that both HD-DVD and Blu-ray could launch at time....it was an 11th hour emergency thing....

If you're refuting with the same info that existed before the report was made, is still a refute? Some specifics at this point would have been a really good idea. This wasn't in next-gen.biz. This was the New York Times, man. Time to let the cat out of the bag.

i'll post it again re: Sony response...

in the two responses to ML, Sony didn't take the opportunity to put them right on the bill of components - and infact say the following about the delay :

"We're aiming for spring, but we haven't announced specific regions," a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment said, adding that some of the detailed specifications of the PlayStation 3 have not yet been finalised, such as those related to the Blu-ray drive and the input and output of video and sound.

"We're waiting for them until the last possible minute, but the launch could be pushed back if they're not decided soon," she said. "

they are AIMING for Spring, but they could be pushed back. I don't see how that confirms that the Merril analysis is wrong until Sony release a firm date.

And again, no mention on the $900 internal costs, but not too surprised by that.

Wow, so SOny just reitterated Spring 2006 for Japan. But no firm date, price point, controller, playable games, etc? Hrmm, none of this shit adds up AT ALL... Wierdest Launch Ever. :lol

LOL...I totally missed the Sony Denial response a few pages back. I thought it was just released now.
