The Game Developers Conference announced today what would appear to be their final keynote today in the form of Sony Computer Entertainment President Phil Harrison who will be giving a lecture titled "Playstation 3: Beyond the Box." The speech will take place on Wednesday, March 22 from 10:30 to 11:30am PST.

GDC is going to be big this year. Lots of great sessions on top of the keynotes, like Epic's talking about Gears of War, Mizuguchi talking about Nintey Nine Nights and so on.

But damnit, why'd it have to be in San Jose?!? I have to drive down there all three days and scour for parking. Man, I'm going to burn myself out, but hey its worth it, especially if I get good networking contacts there with all the luminaries who'll be in attendance.

Hopefully, finally, some new information. "Beyond the box" - networking? :p
what he's saying is you should appreciate women for their minds, even though their other parts are much more interesting. What has this to do with PS3? Wait for the speech, I guess.

Yes, more PS3 info. His speech is before Iwata's. Phil should drown us in PS3 info so that Nintendo is forced to say something.

... it didn't happen at E3. After Sony's CGI extravaganza all Nintendo showed us was essentially an empty box. Basically I think it's fair to assume that each keynote is probably written weeks in advance and won't change based on what competitors reveal. That said, GDC is prime for us to get new info about everything, but i'm not expecting anything seriously juicy until E3.

Probably not about the network specifically, but I'm sure it'll be touched on :P Here's the description for it:

Focusing on the new creative, technical, and business opportunities provided by the arrival of PlayStation 3, the keynote will share Sony Computer Entertainment's innovative plans for the format and will provide a look at how new technology and new business models will help fuel the growth of the computer entertainment industry by attracting new consumers.

Sony? New Markets? Business opportunities?

Downloadable content cometh!

I predict Xbox Live Arcade + iTunes Store + Movie downloads - Nintendo's Back catalog + Fragmented Xbox Live Online Game experience = PS3 'Hub' thing... online... stuff. in 1080p*!

*May or may not reflect real world performance.

Oh man, it's crazy/funny/sad that the PS3 is going to come out before DNF.
Anybody have that list of all the things have happened since DNF was announced? I seem to recall a few space missions being designed, built, and sent to Mars. :lol

Next year they'll be able to celebrate the 10th year since they've announced the game.

That about sums it up. I was fucken 10 when they announced this game...i'm 20 now

Yah its become sad now. I can understand delaying a game for a few years to get it right, but 10 years of development is just absurd. It doesn't even take console manufacturers that long to come up with a new console to release.

At this point I don't think we are hearing anything remotely substantial until E3 where the floodgates will finally open. Of course, we could get forunate and have a few thing slip, though this probably isn't likely. Maybe we can at least get some new media of established games (but I'm not holding my breath).

Stringer isn't going to be announcing huge news for PS3, it would be Kutaragi.

Err, or Harrison, which is more likely, but still... it would be Kutaragi.

Harrison is the head of SCEWW. So he can talk about what people are really interested in, the games.

Nintendo I'm pretty sure will just reiterate what we already know, though perhaps in more colorful wording, and maybe drop a new tidbit here and there.

Sony is an interesting one to gauge. They don't really seem to have a set plan in place yet for the PS3 and it'll be interesting to see if they take advantage of this opportunity to discuss some more worthwhile things, or if they'll wait until E3 like Nintendo.

Oh well, for myself, I'm hoping to catch a good demonstration of Unreal 3 (I'm sure Epic will do some demos at their booth) and Gears of War, plus of course, actually meeting these people in person.

I doubt he'll be talking about his games here, but developer opportunities on their shiny new platform.

I updated the story with this quote from the official PR. Nothing that noteworthy, but its an interesting insight as to what Phil may talk about.

Jamil Moledina, Director of the Game Developers Conference commented on this new high profile announcement. "Mr. Harrison's talk comes at the perfect time for the eager developer audience at the GDC. His discussion will answer many questions developers have for Sony at this stage before the impending PS3 launch."

Such questions include "Where is RSX?" and "When will that Celeron be replaced by an actual CELL?" :D

Yea, its gonna be a lot like MS's speech last year. Probably talking a lot more about non traditional content stuff, backend things, they'll talk about whatever it is they're doing to help developers connect into their online whatever.

No free TV = No Sale.

PS3 = Vaporware!!

Sony to exit non handheld hardware!

Seriously, Sony needs to start doing a lot more to show people that their hardware exists other places than on paper. Empty shells and photos of UNIVACs don't count.

Hehe, I was hoping that Microsoft would do something like that again this year (I got lucky with that TV :D), maybe a free Xbox 360 or so. But I guess MS isn't doing any keynotes this year. Wonder if Sony will give away anything free?

This year Microsoft is giving out beta versions of XNA Studio to everyone in the keynote, if my memory serves me right.

EDIT:

yep:

Tying into this, earlier in the week Microsoft announced the XNA Studio development system - a tool which Allard said will help developers develop games for the next Xbox and for Windows systems by allowing teams to better collaborate and significantly streamline their development efforts. He added that a beta of XNA Studio would be available at MicrosoftÂ’s web site in April, and that at next yearÂ’s GDC keynote he would ensure that every attendee received a copy of the latest beta release in their bags.

I think the obvious responce, atleast to me, is that the only people who have to see the hardware have seen it and you're not one of then. Outside of reasons appearent to only forum-goers, I don't see why Sony or Nintendo have to show it exists to the general public when the actual general public (eg. the 100M other people or so) is content with knowing it's coming soon.

I'm sure most publishers, investors and interested 3rd party developers would just absolutely love that outlook.

If Sony has nothing new to show by the end of the current fiscal quarter, you can bet your ass that will start to affect their bottom line. That need to present progress and keep their shareholders and other financially interested parties 'in the loop' and public showings are a very real part of that.

Excellent news. Just a mere month.
Im very certain we will get some juicy new information. Ecspecially regarding HUB.
Will be cool to watch the video as Phil is a very good speaker/cool guy, should be entertaining.

True. I'm glad to see him getting more face-time. He was by far the best speaker at E3. I just hope he's able to talk at this, in a specific way about things, rather than a general "make good games" inspirational.

This is in fucking late march. I hope to god we get some ps3 info way before that.
Yeah, I mean if they want meet that Spring date they are going to have to talk sooner...

Hahaha what? I'm flying across the country just to be there! Thankfully I was met with incredible luck and I'm staying with a really nice guy for the entire event.

I can't wait for all these awesome events and keynotes. My brain will be a melted pile of good by the end of the whole thing.

Curiosly though, he sucked in GDCE, although he is usually an excellent speaker. I think that it was due to two reasons. First of all, it seemed that he was not at all confortable with discussing PS3. I guess we know now why - it was much further off than thought immidiately after E3. Secondly and more importantly, the GDCE keynote arrangement was the lamest ever, a softballing interview session arranged with Mr. Moledina with nothing substantial to show or announce. Moledina better not try that lazy shit again or I'll want my thousand bucks back.

I much prefer the well produced GDC keynotes with fantastic AV presentations and big announcements. In such a setting Phil should do great.

I want the following addressed:

Does the PS3 have hardware support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD (supported by Blu-ray) and can achieve discrete 7.1 surround (and no, I'm not talking about simulated - see Pro Logic IIx Metal Gear Solid 3)?

What purpose will two HDMI outputs have on games and although the PS3 is capable of 1080p over two streams, is this limited merely to Blu-ray movie playback? (I can see games visually limited if the PS3 is outputting to two different sources)

Microsoft has already shown to support the latest networking standards (see http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessnetadapter/default.htm), will Sony follow through with peripheral support for Dual Band 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wireless over A / B / G networks?

Those of us who can support 720p - 1080p HDTV and the latest in next generation audio and networking deserve a fully-featured console with all the benefits.

It must be really hard to do a speech and not be able to talk about what everyone came to there to hear you talk about. Hopefully he's able to talk more about it this time. It seems like the developers are itching to talk about it too. The Killzone devs that post on their official boards are constantly asked rather simple questions about development on the system but they can't talk about it due to NDA's (and due to people who decide its ok to misquote them and post it on websites). I'm actually surprised they haven't just left the board because nearly every question they're asked has to do with the PS3 in some way or another.

That's it in a nutshell, frankly.
