What I've heard is that it's not outright bad, but pretty cheap and loaded up with fat, sugar and salt. Lots of guys get overweight and unfit.

Yeah, that is just racist propaganda shit. Do you really think people who presumably get money from a job or social services really want to stay locked in so they could get that free food? Maybe that would have some merit if you are talking about people who just come there without really moving there and have no money or access to social services and no hope of things getting better. Lines like that here across the water (Finland) are generally used against immigrants though.

I'm surprised at the amount of people in this topic who have spent time in jail. I suppose jail isn't prison, but still, I always forget that people who go to jail use the internet, too. Pretty stupid of me!

It's not terrible just most of it is pretty tasteless. The "juice" comes to mind because it's basically water with what seems like a pinch of orange flavor sprinkled in it.

I've only been to jail for minor stuff (driving on a suspended license and a missed court date) and from my experience the food is pretty crap. worse than the food though is the yellow water filled with saltpeter to keep your "urges" down. Luckily I never stayed past a week (first time was like a night, the second about 6 days) so I just ended up starving myself and giving my food away to the guys with comm. juice boxes.

Orange is the New Black is an entertaining show but not terribly realistic (from what I've heard). Regular prison life is a lot more boring and less violent/scary. That said I think the depiction of solitary confinement is pretty good. There was a good PBS Frontline documentary on solitary that showed way worse than OITNB did.

Season 1 I couldn't stand how Piper makes just the dumbest decisions every second. If you were friendlier, less bitchy, and largely keep to yourself I think minimum security prison would be boring but not the hell it is in the show.
