• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Sorry to say this but I did not enjoy RDR2.

i'm still fairly early in the game but have to admit i'm not hugely compelled to keep going back to it. i feel like i'm playing it out of obligation most of the time (i rarely Day 1 games at full price, so i want to get my dollar's worth here)

i can see how when some of the progression mechanics start to "click" i can start having a good time with it. but i don't have much time to game these days, some of this stuff like camp upkeep and keeping arthur fed and whatnot, not particularly how i want to spend my precious time. not trying to be too down on the game as it's obviously well made, just not a 10/10 GOAT experience

This is partly why I didn't rush in and get it (this and also the price all over was **insert too damn high meme**)

Ratings for games these days don't matter much to most gamers, as any game can be anything to anyone.

I waited to see people's reactions not reviewers reactions, the main things I'm hearing are it looks amazing plays great (apart from the controls sometimes) but the story is lacking.

I'll get it eventually, but I'm in no real rush right now.

I don't enjoy it either. The graphics, presentation and voice acting are all top notch, but most of the gameplay is boring and awkward. They would have been better off making a movie.

I bought in to the hype and am confused how almost everyone gave it perfect scores when I have been reading tons of complaints about the game. Since I already bought it I will pick it back up again if they make some improvements via patches.

Things to remember about critics:

1) most are scared of terrifyingly vendictive fanbases (eg Rockstar, Zelda)...Jim Sterling for example was ddos'ed because of a 7/10 for breath of the wild, had much hate sent to him and his family, and stopped reviewing for a while because of it. Who needs that shit.

2)self selecting, as the only people willing to drop 50+ hours into a review for <$300 are people who know they like rockstar games. Self selection is generally true even for more standard length games.

3)big companies hire critics to consult on games, so they are literally built to please critics. These consultation fees will be 10X or more for what they get paid for reviewing a game.

4) Although I doubt anyone who reviewed this game also worked on it, we dont know who has worked with these big companies in the past and we dont know which outlets allows their employees to have financial ties to big companies.

5)they are people too, so they buy into hype too.

6)generally, they are low paid dilettantes who just like playing games a lot, they arent better than 'us', probably have better grammar tho.

Point is not to shit in them, just to point out Metacritic is not a measure of quality or greatness.

A game like is more about the journey. It's like the last two Assassin creed games. I can't tell you exactly what it's was totally about but I can tell you stories for hours about what happened to me when doing quests and exploring.

BoTW, on the other hand, is one of the most wonderful games ever made. Link controls like a dream and it feels truly open world.

To each their own, I guess.

The controls are fine but the game is absolute shit and NOT a proper Zelda game.

They need to fix the masks being fucking worthless and killing somebody in the middle of nowhere shouldn't have the law on your ass fast either. Also taking meat back to the butcher takes way too long. I make more money stealing wagons and selling those. Less effort as well.

How is it in terms of subtly?

My issue with most 'serious' AAA games right now is that they always seem to want to bang me over the head with their main points.
I find it off-putting because I often feel like I'm being treated like an idiot.

Same here bro, and only for one reason, 99% of the time it's a horse riding simulator.

I requested an Xbox digital game refund yesterday, hope it goes through.

I'm not a fan of several game mechanics either, one if them being the shooting mechanics and controls. I like the heavy feel and impact, just not the aiming and auto locking stuff.

And I also seem to have a bad time trying to like and care about hunting. It's tedious that you're not able to stack up pelts, instead of these limited amounts. Running back and forth to sell them to the proper guy.

Everything else I very much enjoy. The immersion is great and I love just riding around exploring the map and trying to actually Rob a train properly.

This my issue with most R* game. They absolutely make detail and alive open world but for its really boring when it comes to actually playing their games. This why I say to read or watch actual review rather than just looking at the score.

Such a shame because the pay off by the end is so worth it. I posted here early on (about 5 hours in) and I was not into it very much, but things changed and I'm so glad I stuck with it.

As of now, having just finished it— I couldn't love it anymore. Wonderful game.

I finished the game, I still feel the same about after that.

Why be sorry for that? I did not enjoy breath of the wild. No worries, ok?
Same here. It's my least favorite Zelda game. People get upset when I say I don't like it, but it just happens to be a good game that I don't like. RDR2 is a good game that I do like.

Live and let live.

I played until chapter 2 the day it came out and haven't touched it since. I fell asleep during my first play through, not a good sign.
This is where I've got to and I'm trading it in tomorrow. Its just too dull for me.

That and I have major open world fatigue and have no patience for the terrible controls.

I didn't play the game, but it seems like its like a lot of Rockstar games. Great open world, meticulously crafted, amazing graphics, but ancient controls and QOL and missions that break down to go to A, long drawn out walking/talking scene, do B, more talking/walking and then rinse and repeat. Also all the little things just seem so overwhelming and I don't have that type of patience for gaming anymore.

OTOH I respect what Rockstar did with this game, and I can 100% see why other people would totally be into it and love the game. Everyone has different tastes.

That's the main problem people who cant get into the game have
This is the type of game you play with lots of free time, better enjoyed with long hours of play time not in short burst

If you don't have the time save it for your vacations, it would be a shame to spoil such great experience by playing out of obligation in short bursts, this game is meant to be played in Long sitdown sessions with no obligations in the back of your head

Game is another level amazing I can see how some of it can be a huge fucking turn off for some but me I'm having a fucking blast! It's probably a little hard to be a good guy to an extent and the bounty system needs tweaking but the game rewards creativity!

Played for a whole hour, then turned it off. Haven't touched it since. I skipped all the videos (those in the first chapter I mean). When the game started I was like: 'Yeah, if wanna see something like this, I'll re-watch that Tarantino movie.' And then of course it begins: go to location A and do X, then come back to camp, but make a stop at location B first. Riding the horse, I mean it looks nice, but seriously, I don't have time for making real world miles in a game world. O, and several times I wanted to strike up a conversation with an npc and I ended up pulling my gun on him. But all of these things I knew when I put my order in. What I didn't know, was that the game didn't even remotely give me a sense of wonder while entering its world. Which GTA V did give me (and well all of R* titles before it, starting with GTA III on PS2); I mean, something like that sense of wonder I got from, say, my first moments with Zelda BotW: nothing beats coming out of that cave and sprinting for the overhang... This, RDR2 I mean, I don't know: it felt like R* was showing off or something, especially with the overly cinematic approach of the game, and in the process forgetting to make something that's actually fun to play - which for me, it sure wasn't. But, you know, I am glad for those many millions of people around the world who love it.

How does that work on xbox? Is it like steam? Or is it like Sony where they outright tell you "we are only doing this because we nice, we absolutely dont have to do, and it is only happening once so dont ask again."

I'm with you, OP. It has the worst controls and gunplay, the slow walking and slow riding halfway across the map for some boring quest is not endearing the game to me either. I'm not fond of the characters and I think Tomb Raider and AssCreed are prettier games and WAY more fun. That said I got paid $40 for taking the game when I bought my 1X so I'm good with the price at least 😂

And we're not alone in our opinion, although the critics may have gone crazy with 10/10s, the user score is much lower on MC; 6.9 on XB & 7.4 on PS

Amazing game, but i understand why some aspects would turn people off. The only grip i continue to have with a lot of the more negative/luke-warm reviews and receptions is that majority of the problems can be easily changed by the user. Excluding the story's length/flaws and slow movement, which is absolutely understandable.

but does this opinion really require a thread? Not trying to be hostile, but this seems pointless. Threads that are positive at least include peeps uploading content.

When I first started playing the game, and stopped obsessing over Pro enhancements or lack of, I loved it for the first couple hours. Would have rated it a 9.5 after first 3 hours or so.

Hours 3-10 dipped a little for me, probably would have dropped my score to an 8.

Hour 11 and beyond have brought me back in. My final score is 8.9. Very good game. Could have been game of the generation for me but slips up in a couple key areas.

One thing I'll say is that while I understand and even agree with a number of common criticisms, I do not find the cast unlikable. I care about them and their personality quirks. It's a band of outlaws.

Edit: I do think that combining the length of time since the first RDR with how big a change of pace this is from GTA5, this game might not have been what a lot of people expected

Also, a number of small gripes can easily be patched away as QoL changes. I mean please just give me a loot all option

It's not perfect and it's not for everyone. It's still the best open world game I have ever played. I really appreciate the attention to detail and the removal of much of the paint by numbers hand holding found in most every other game. I appreciate having to search for things and not just run to an icon. I like reading notes and other found items for clues or insight. The way the world building is presented organically as you explore it is truly innovative.

It is a very slow paced game and I can see why people can be turned away but like I said earlier the game does pick up and has some very good missions. The world also in terms of hunting or NPC's you can encounter is far better than other open world games IMO.

And the backlash begins!

That's cool though, I can very much see this not being for everyone. I am really loving it so far and I'm only on chapter 3. I hope it doesn't feel too long by the end.

I am enjoying it but considering the critic`s response, it`s up there as one of the most overrated games of all time in my opinion.

Main story is good, acting, graphics, writing, NPC interactions are all stellar, however:

- First 3-4 hours are a slog
- Controls are clunky (especially shooting/cover system)
- Button prompts and UI are 10 years ago bad
- Secondary activities do not provide substantial rewards
- Quest design is the same rockstar stuff going back to GTA3: follow the pathline, cut-scene, mostly scripted missions (a few choice options here and there, that do not change the main story, are definitely not a game changer)
- Main missions are a bit repetitive

It`s an 8/10 game.

Agreed. Most honest review I've read of the game. Agreed too with being one of the most overrated, put it next to Witcher 3 and BoTW lol

I bought it day 1 too and I feel its a solid 8 game, its controls are so bad and you get this weird delay, that I can't in all honesty legit say 9 or above as its a disrespect to games released this year that actually FEEL GOOD, Spiderman, God Of War etc I had the same issue with Witcher 3, bad controls , gameplay nerfed to be so much easier then past in the series and I just couldn't give it my personal Game Of The year with bugs, glitches, and bad controls and nerfed design.

Wait... is this game actually playable without using the quest compass/markers AT ALL ? (meaning the NPCs and such give you enough info on where to go)

I'd be very surprised and impressed if so. Not something I'd expect of a AAA game, knowing most of their user base wouldn't use it vs the work it would take to for the devs to put into that.

I totally respect the game but as with most Rockstar games it just isn't really up my alley. The "see if it sticks" dialogue isn't satisfying and the mission structure makes these games repetitive and is made worse by mission-givers in the middle of the game always being needless padding of the story. There's an incentive to make the game as long as possible to make the player spend as much time exploring as possible but I usually feel like these games would be better off, for my tastes anyway, if you cut out two or three mission givers in the middle of the campaign, because you always get to a point where it feels like filler that stagnates the story.

I'm enjoying it overall.
But find it funny how I thought the first game had great controls but a trash story and this now has a great story but trash controls.

I think it's absolutely amazing, with its warts and all. Probably the most fun I've had with a game in the last 3 or 4 years. I get that some people would be put off by the controls or the slower pace. Best thing that happened was I read a preview where the author warned to take this came as it comes. Walk. Do the chores. Immerse into the simulation the way it's intended rather than try to rush everywhere. I went into it with that mindset and it just blew me away. I binged HARD on this one.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a better game than Red Dead Redemption 2. Not a better technical achievement, RDR2 is probably the pinnacle of the medium, but as a game, AC:O is just more fun to play.

You get hate for that?

I'm not completely in love with Mario Oddessy. It's just kind of boring. Very easy. Some clever parts but overall forgettable in my opinion.

Agreed. I don't really care for any of the Mario Games after Sunshine. Sunshine pretty much the last of the good 3D Mario platformers,

I'm surprised I'm enjoying it as much as I am. Granted I did really like RDR, but I can't stand the GTA games--the way missions are scripted so that the slightest bit of deviation causes a fail, the clunky controls, and the writing overall. RDR2 has all of that, but for some reason I'm really enjoying it.

I was worried about the controls but I've acclimated to them (shooting is still awful but I'm not a console person). I just started Chap 3 and already have something like 30-40 hours in the game (5 probably in hold em). I've been playing it more like a immersive cowboy simulator and ignoring a lot of the story. The other day I decided I was going to go hunt a legendary animal, so I ate some stew and headed out to hunt, knowing I likely would be away from camp for 3-5 days. Camping at night, hunting game for food etc etc. Ended up getting distracted with other things and dind't manage to get my hunt finished, but still it was a really enjoyable experience.

This definitely isn't a game for everyone, and even for me I have to be in the right mindset to enjoy it. It's not a game I will play when I want "something" to do. It's more a game where I'm living the life of Arthur and take things how they come, which means a lot of boring travel and non exciting hours, but it's relaxing and enjoyable to me.

Maybe not completely, but there are certainly many times that is possible and even stuff like treasure that you literally have to find by looking at a sketch of the terrain. I find it is the right amount of guidance to not be too frustrated, but still feel like you are actually doing some of the work. It's a great feeling 30 hours in to look at the map and have only 4-5 icons.

I heard from many people the same reaction. Yea its great all these micro details but the game itself is boring. Ill hold on for a bit, wait for a used copy or something. Others had amazing experience so....

But what I saw most of is comments on controls. Listen, obviously the game has its flaws and its fine but now all those 10/10 scores sound like major bullshit.

I didn't buy into the hype. I almost did and decided to get a XBX for it, they really marketed the $100 off to buy one. I decided to upgrade my PC instead. I told myself to wait for user impressions and wait a week when the dust settles to see if it's really worth it. Getting burnt on my recent purchase, Shadow of the Tomb Raider helped me out (loved the previous 2 games). Slow paced games just isn't for me anymore.
