Soul Calibur 2 HD Online announced

I hope he hasn't been replaced.

Also, it looks like Daishi has been replaced.

I'm of mixed opinion of Daishi- he did good in improving the gameplay standards of the series and understood the value of competitive play, but the new chars added in SC5 and some of the new mechanics didn't fit the Soul series at all and felt shoehorned in from 2d fighters.

Hopefully SC6 (which I think will happen) can take the good from SC5 (competent gameplay) , and not the bad (missing chars, dump Viola/Zwei/Pyrrha/Patroklos- they're all lame, just guard)

As for Link, I'm worried more about if Sophitia/Sueng Mina will be in- if it's a port of the arcade they might not. No Mina no buy for me.
Viola, Zwei, pyrrha and pat should all return as I really like viola and zwei's concept.

Im guessing no link from zelda. Its not like that character made people buy this game.

Nintendo is scraping for every third party support they can get (and if they are not they better should) just giving out the license to use link and getting an HD remake for a game that sold best on GC? Sounds like a good deal to me.

Nintendo would not just give Namco Link for free. They'd likely allow his use (but demand preference if they did so) but would still charge for his license. And it's not just Link they have to license but his music and all other references to the Zelda series as well. And this wouldn't be cheap.

You can say that the GC version sold the most so the wii-u version would sell well too...but Namco can't guarantee that. They got burned on Tekken Tag 2 which had exclusive nintendo mascot items and modes...burned bad. And the userbase of the gamecube small as it was in 2003 still eclipses many times over the userbase of the Wii-u at present. There's just no reason to expect returns on the cost of licensing a character that would have to be exclusive to one platform. If they do decide to pay the license for a 3rd party character it'd be spawn as they could use him in all versions of the game made thus ensuring potential profit. And They likely won't even do that when they can just use heihachi and pay nothing.

Wellwhat I said was that nintendo shouldnt demand money for it and try to get that wiiu port.
damn this thread went into the shitter with the Zelda fans invasion

Hint: soul calibur is a sour thing for a lot of nintendo fans since SC2 performed wel and namco never bothered to put the franchise on a nintendo system ever again (except legends, which was..)

The new characters in sc5 added awesome diversity to the cast and were entirely unique. They should return and be expanded upon if we get a sequel. So should supers and ex moves.

You tell me. Do you expect Nintendo to just give out their characters for free for a non exclusive port of a 10 year old game? How does this benefit them? Let's say they do and just expect a cut of the sales (and they would) how does that benefit namco? The Wii-u userbase is just not big enough to make it worth it.

I mean in a perfect world there'd be no restrictions or fees and the wii-u users could have their link in sc2. I'd have no issue with that. Unfortunately stuff costs money and just like for almost every other 3rd party dev the wii-u version is just not cost effective. If they just give you what the 360 and ps3 players get people will ignore sc2 with no link. If they give you Link they could lose money just paying for his use. What is Namco to do?

They finally get a third party game?

There are more profitable 3rd party games to chase than a 10 year old port of a non exclusive game. Better to use their mascots in a 3rd party exclusive (ala itadaki street or the rumored Mario Kart vs Sonic all stars racing) if they want to go that route. Give people a reason to buy the wii-u.

When even small titles like this aren't ported, I worry about the future larger titles.

Luckily, I bought mine to play bayonetta 2. I feel for those who wanted something more.

Oh man I got this game along with F-Zero GX. Link's grab ring out potential was such bullshit in this game. I liked Soul Caliber/Souls Edge before but I honestly only got this game because of Link. If its cheap ill double dip though

Finally!

I'm hoping that online aspect is actually the Conquest Mode from the arcade. That was amazing back in the day. Helping your army win territories and growing up in rank. I was the second on the top list in the local arcade where I used to live. A Platinum Edge Master of something. Great memories.

EDIT: It seems most of you only played the console version. The arcade version was amazing due to Conquest Mode and all you guys can think of is a bonus character that does not belong in the series.

It's too bad, really. One character-- a bonus character, no less, and one that never affected the arcade original-- is the difference between people buying and people ignoring this game. I dumped a ton of tokens into the coin-op and while I do have SCII for PS2 and GCN, I'll get this for PS3 if only for the Trophies and hopefully faster loading transitions.

To each their own, I guess. If Link is really a dealbreaker for people, that's their call. To me, those platform-specific characters were gimmicky at best and I rarely used them.

Nope, still have Sophitia!

But my only complaint is the lack of support for the Wii U. Wish Bamco and Nintendo brought this back to eShop to celebrate how amazing having Link in SCII was back in the day.

I'd honestly forgotten about this feature. Never Got to play the arcade version and always wanted to try it. Same for the much improved Soul Calibur 3 arcade edition. Here's hoping someone brings this up with Namco...would love to see SC2 HD become some form of director's cut bringing back modes like this.

I love Link, and playing as him was fun, but shut the fuck up. If all you can do is complain when something awesome like this is announced, examine you're sorry life.

I love you guys though

And don't whine to Bamco. Whine to Nintendo to make a viable platform so this game can actually get released there. There is no conspiracy. Nintendo is just inept.

This is an old game. I have a hard time believing they wouldn't get their money back by porting it to Wii U. It's not like they need to design and code anything new, or print discs for that matter.

The original SC 2 for GC had Link in it by default though - I don't think they had to pay a fee, just like PS2 and XBOX versions had their own console specific char included (Spawn and someone else for PS2)

The install base is miniscule, plus on-board storage space is tight for digital releases. Even though a port may not seem to cost all that much, it still does cost money and there's still a risk involved in spending the time, cash, and resources on a release that doesn't have wide appeal and may not have Link as a character anyway (since this is a port of the PS2 game).

As with most third-party publishers now, Namco doesn't need Nintendo to have a successful release of SoulCalibur II Online. The install bases are large enough for PS3/360 that risk is fairly minimal. It's on Nintendo to negotiate with Namco and work out a deal to get the game to WiiU. Namco doesn't owe WiiU owners anything.

How about they bring back all the classic characters that people loved that they threw away in SC5 first.

That'd be nice, but I'm all for keeping a roster small and compact. I have my character, and aside from Zas and Yunseong or Hwang, I really don't find anybody missing to be worth it. So YMMV. I'd rather they add 2-3 characters and make what we have better rather than diluting it over 40+ people.

PS2 had Heihachi and Namco own him. Xbox Got Spawn cause Namco was making a Spawn videogame around the same time as SC2's development. The additional cost to add him to that version was likely minimal due to that factor. Nintendo likely approached Namco to add Link to SC2 like they did EA for their various sports titles. They were desperate to get 3rd party support to fight the rapidly growing PS2.

Nowadays Nintendo would not approach them unless they could get the game exclusively...they don't farm out their mascots anymore unless it's exclusive. If Namco did get Link they'd have to pay for him this time. Just like if they tried to bring back Spawn he'd likely cost them more than they paid in 2003...or would if he was still a relevant IP.

Given its Steam release, Scribblenauts Unlimited says hi.

(As a related factoid, there's no Steam-exclusive Valve words in the Steam version, despite the fact that Valve is the polar antithesis of Nintendo in that regards: One to whore their mascots in other games on their service at every oppurtunity possible.)

Nintendo likely approached Namco to add Link to SC2 like they did EA for their various sports titles.
Didn't EA approach Nintendo first for Mario in NBA Street V3 to have a compensation for the lack of online play?

It's a port of the PS2 version, with all of the extra modes and characters and silliness. I'm pretty sure Sophie/Mina players have nothing to worry about.

Hopefully the PS3 means that the PS2 slowdown which it had in some stages can be avoided. the PS2 port of SC2 was inferior. Given the HD upgrade I do feel pretty confident about that.

I wish 2G would be dealt with, but that's very unlikely.

I really wish they would have done SC3AE instead, but that's super unlikely- maybe push for that next-gen.

I hope he hasn't been replaced.

Viola, Zwei, pyrrha and pat should all return as I really like viola and zwei's concept.

Pyrrha was nothing more than crappy moe-bait
Patroklos was ok, I'd be ok with him returning, but Alpha Patroklos was clearly them not having Setsuka finished.
Zwei was just stupid and weak
Viola was massively OP to the point she got banned in France

On top of that, many of the replacements didn't have the personality or gameplay that the originals had. At least with Tekken 3 the new generation were more interesting than the chars they replaced.

Holy crap that's awesome! SC2 is by far my favorite in the series. Best balance, best weapon/stat system, no awful create-a-character that encouraged the ugliest designs.

It's weird that people believe Namco wouldn't profit from a Wii U release with Link as a character. Of course Namco doesn't owe anything to Wii U owners, but if you think they wouldn't make money out of this you are delusional.

I have recently been playing the Xbox version of Soul Calibur 2 on my Xbox 360 and I marvel at how great the game looks, especially for it's time. Amazing fighter, loved it when it came out.

It looks this beautiful because it's one of the few games on Xbox that would actually play at 720p with component cables, so yeah it holds up pretty well.

Gotta love that Original Xbox 720p. I played the Gamecube version back in the day so I was really surprised when I started playing the Xbox version.

Day one regardless, but it'd be great if they somehow managed to get Spawn in the game too. Really loved using him in the original.

This is great timing though. I've been itching to play Soul Calibur again, but I didn't want to get IV or especially V. I'll gladly take this though!

Well, it's great that the pretty poor Soul Calibur V cast isn't back (can we just forget about them?), but they're redoing Soul Calibur II... and aren't making a version with Link in it? Come on... without Link, I don't think I'm interested. He's one of the best characters in the game. So yeah, no Link, no buy.

Most of the people crying for Link would stop after playing for a day or two anyways

Truthfact: Link made the Gamecube version the worst SC2 version.

The only thing worse/more unbalanced/more unfitting ever included in the Soul series were the SW characters.

Most of the people crying for Link would stop after playing for a day or two anyways
Yeah. Those people probably never even really played SC2, they just dicked around with Link.

Unfortunately to keep the framerate up, the 720p mode on Xbox SC2 only ran in windowboxed 4:3 instead of 16:9 widescreen. This HD Online port will finally resolve that.

We can hope it will be 1080p on both PS3 and 360, like most of the HD releases this gen.

Pft...PC's and consoles are never factored in when it comes to exclusives. If you want it on consoles or handhelds prepare to buy something with nintendo branding.

Didn't EA approach Nintendo first for Mario in NBA Street V3 to have a compensation for the lack of online play?

That may be the case as well...obscure 3rd party trivia from 10 or so years ago is not my forte. Either way they seem to have stopped doing that for 3rd parties that aren't exclusive (though tekken tag 2 does fall in a weird area where it's slathered in nintendo nostalgia but no actual nintendo characters).
