Soul Calibur 2 HD Online announced

I honestly found that custom costumes and bad looking CAS characters to ruin the look of these fighting games

instead of playing characters that design intended, random players create the ugliest creations (that lose their pants) and challenge you online.

ugly ugly ugly creations

I don't mind CaS, I just wish I didn't have to be subjected to the abominations people create. I'd like a mode where it just defaults to whatever character they're aping so I don't have to see it.

Great news but I don't want to double dip so I'll stick to my XboxOG version. However, if this game gets some buzz and move enough units then I may potentially get SC3: AE in HD now that I'll gladly double dip on.

Is there anyone who doesn't think of Link when they hear Soul Calibur 2?

I'm not even sure why you go ahead with this project if you can't get the rights to Link again.

I don't and neither do the majority of SC2 fans, thinking otherwise is absurd. Cervantes >>>> Link

The only people that aren't buying because of no Link are Nintendo fans that don't give a shit about SC or fighting games, they just love their damn elf.

This reminds me...is Heihachi gonna have Daisuke Goro as his voice actor?

Good question...I can't see them recording new lines but what would happen if they used the old voice? Where does the money go?

Loved this game when it came out. Lots of bullshit in it but playing at a casual level with others is a ton of fun. Can't wait to get my Nightmare and Cervantes team going. I always had the PS2 ver and I like Soul Calibur 2, but it's a shame seeing so many people cry foul since Link isn't in it. I guess if you were playing the game JUST for Link I can understand that, but the game has so many game modes and characters it seems ridiculous to not buy it based purely off of Link.

I bought the Xbox version, I think of Todd Macfarlane's slug baby. (Spawn.)

Link is ass in this game.

I'm pretty sure that the guest characters in specific console versions are not the first thing on most people's minds when they think of old fighting games.

I'm not saying everyone likes him, but I don't think you can separate Link from SCII. I haven't read all 18 pages of this thread (I've read four) but most of the posts mention Link and I think that sort of proves my point.

I'm not saying there aren't people that don't care or won't enjoy this or are excited, because clearly there are, is all.

I can definitely separate him, I had the Xbox version. Spawn is awesome and I don't care about Link in the slightest. The reason you see so many Link mentions itt is because of the sizeable community of NintendoGAF, truth is most people remember SC2 because it's the best game in the series, not because it was that fighting game with Zelda.

It proves nothing except that Nintendo fans want more games on their console. Most people that played SC2 didn't have link in their version of the game.

I wonder if this HD remake with Link would:ve sold better than their Tekken Wii U game did with the Nintendo costumes. I:m thinking it would. They should:ve given Wii U a port too. Lame.

I agree. I can't imagine someone can actually appreciate the game if all they care about is a bonus character. It's one of the best 3d fighting games ever and not because of Link.

Great characters are very important in a fighting game especially flashy ones like the Soul Calibur series. Just as SFII wouldn't be as fun without Ken and Ryu. SC2 wouldn't be the same without Link.

Lots of people wouldn't care if Ryu and Ken were taken out. Lots of people would.

Difference is that there were several versions of SC2, and only one of them had Link.

Uh didn't the GameCube version outsell both other home versions?

Just saying...

Combined? No. Xbox + PS2 > GC sales = more people w/o Link than with Link. Also, not taking into account the multiple arcade versions.

Just saying...

Can any of the anti-Link side explain exactly WHY someone who loved Link in SC2 would purchase this HD rerelease?

They wouldn't. It's not even being released on WiiU, so it's not an option for Link fans. It's almost port begging.

I:m not anti Link (quite the opposite), but I liked one other character a lot too so I:m still getting it. The cast is decent for me and I liked the game so yeah, but Link was my man!

You would just ignore it, like you guys did with Tekken Tag 2 on Wii U.

But...

I did [buy TTT2]!

The thing is I already own the game though. I already have this cast. This cast plus Link.

(Two copies, in fact! Played & loved SC2 so much the disc was too scratched, so I bought it again~)

Why does every thread mention a WiiU port. People have to accept the fact the WiiU is dead when it comes to 3rd party support. Why do Nintendo fans keep doing this to themselves. Even newly announced digital games don't have WiiU versions announced like Strider.

Even if it was the best selling one (I don't know) it sure as hell didn't outsell PS2+Xbox.

Even if it didn't outsell the PS2+Xbox combined, the fact that it outsold each of them separately shows that there's a hell of a lot of demand for the game from Nintendo fans who want to play as Link.

Well it's too bad the only HD console from Nintendo is the Wii U and I guess TTT2 sales numbers didn't exactly please Namco.

Haha! No scratches on mine but yeah I played this a lot too.

This has online play that:s why it would:ve been really cool to have this with Link.

Oh well, though. We Zelda fans will have to wait till Smash Bros. for our fanservice.

During the Gamecube days maybe. Not exactly the same climate. And the Wii U definitely isn't the Gamecube.

Strider is digital?

I had all 3 versions and hated all 3 guest characters. I hated Kratos in MK and Broken Destiny, Vader and Yoda in SCIV and Ezio in SCV too. Doesn't mean I hate them in the games they're from, but they should stay there.

When I think of SCII, I can assure you that I do not think of Link. Because I never care about/use those characters. I actually forgot he was in it until this thread went rampant.

I can see that Link would cause interest from Nintendo fans who might've not cared about SC otherwise. But the fact is SC2 HD is not going to be on Wii U and is not going to contain Link at all. They've shown Heihachi, as he's Namco property. So he's going to be in both versions.

I don't. I bought the Xbox and GC versions and played the fuck out of it in arcades. I'm excited because Soul Calibur II is one of the greatest fighters ever, and it still is in the versions without Link.

Link is every bit as popular now as he was in 2003 and I'm pretty sure Wii U sales will at least get to Gamecube levels once Nintendo starts releasing some games for it.

Didn't Wind Waker actually outsell SS quite nicely especially considering the install base? I have the impression that Zelda is declining and Mario has been on the rise lately.

Sorry OT :P

I don't see why they are making such a fuss over this being HD on the trailer. If I remember correctly the Xbox version of this game was already full HD 1080i.

If anything I would have preferred a proper remake using the engine from Soul Calibur V and more detailed character models.

Xbox ver. should've been 4:3 720p which is less than ideal.

SC2 HD will be 16:9 and I hope its 1080p native as even SCIV was already very close to that res.

I think this would:ve done better than the Tekken Tag 2 game, but I do also think Link:s popularity has gone down some since those days.

Remember, back then Soul Calibur 2 was the first debut of Adult Link with the new next gen graphics better than the tech demo shown at space world before. Tommy Tallirico at G4 gave specical mention to Link in his SC 2 review and gave another smack at Wind Waker and it:s toon shading and said that the GCN Zelda should:ve looked like SC 2.

This was all before the e3 2004 revealing of what we would all know today as Twilight Princess.

I feel the Zelda games have been pretty weak lately and that Link:s popularity may have taken a hit since those days, but yeah he:s still a very popular character no doubt.

There's a lot of weird arguments in here.

-TTT2 sales are a barometer for nothing, like Capcom taking Darkstalker sales to gauge interest in Street Fighter. SC2 was a breakout title that transcended the genre, it wasn't just fighting game fans that bought it.

-Port cost arguments are borderline ridiculous. This is precisely a quick money cash-in. It's costing them almost nothing.

-It's not just about Wii U, it's about a lot of platforms like XB1, PS4, Vita and PC as well (Android and iOS too if you really want to get into it).

-Not giving people their favorite versions would be like WB releasing the SNES version of Mortal Kombat as an upgraded digital version. Sure it's the same game and plays fine maybe even some people liked it best but fans still would have great reason to be upset about it. This doesn't stop at the GCN version with Link which is obviously Nintendo tied but also Xbox.

You can be excited for this but Namco-Bandai is still incompetent and botching the release.

Agreed.

I might be willing to put some or all of the blame on Nintendo though. It's not absurd to imagine Nintendo not wanting Link in another fighting game with SSB coming up.

Sure, that would be a terrible decision on their part, but could still be the scenario.

Sorry OT :P

Wind Waker only sold 3.07 million units worldwide according to official Nintendo numbers, while Skyward Sword sold 3.42 million in just its first two months.

Edit: That Wind Waker figure was as of GDC 2004, but it still represents over a year of worldwide sales.

Yep.

I liked your first point in particular. All versions of Soul Calibur 2 became a little talk around my tiny gaming community and these people aren:t fighting game fans who study the frame data and know what 236K means.

I couldn't care any less about Link in SoulCalibur II, and I have a Gamecube copy. As with the other platform-specific characters, Link is a gimmick. I didn't care about Heihachi, I didn't care about Spawn, and Link was no different.

I played SoulCalibur II in arcades, where there was none of this nonsense. I thought the character mix was fine as is, and that's what drove me to buy the console versions. I'd be content if Namco took out Heihachi & Necrid, too, and gave us an arcade port with Conquest Mode intact.
