If they closed the armor, you cannot see her camel toe.

You could see it in upskirt shots, or could be about to see it with some minor skirt movements, which is the whole point of short skirts in fanservice-ish designs in the first place.

EDIT: And not all Japanese school girl outfits are "sailor suit".

True, but the common modern design is basically a business suit with the school girl skirt, and her design is nothing like that either.

I guess what God's Beard is saying is that her image & outfit implies a school cheerleader image.

Although you're right about the suit in SCIV, it isn't always like that.

Look at this SCIII discarded design:
http://soulcalibur.wikia.com/wiki/File:Concept21TAKISCIII.jpg

The socks are just traditional ninja garb. Even Taki's usual full body suit is pretty much just using their imagery considering the sandals there, even if there aren't socks. If it was really meant to be school girl socks, she'd have shoes of some kind, not the traditional ninja sandals and socks.

I just don't think the imagery of a sailor suit can be "suggested" without even any kind of skirt, sailor collar or the characteristic colors. Even if your points were right, the only similarities you've mentioned to a schoolgirl outfit are socks and a fake skirt. That in no way automatically means "school girl".

If they really wanted a "sailor suit"-like outfit, they could easily have closed the armor, making it look like a skirt, and included some kind of colar, but there's nothing like that. And, like I said, the divisions of the armor are even orientated in the wrong way to match a schoolgirl skirt, they're just standard plated pieces (in addition, making plainly visible shorts there completely defeat the point of a "skirt").

They clearly want to give her an "youthful girl" image, but that doesn't mean school girl, if there's no actual association with the female school uniform design.

It looks like she's wearing buruma. maybe its for her ninja-training classes.

baggy pants narrowing to a cuff at the ankles (worn below a skirt), intended to preserve Victorian decency while being less of a hindrance to women's activities than the long full skirts

I love how these threads spiral into some form of sexual irritation. Hilarious. Can't you guys just be happy that we are getting a new Soul Calibur with pretty things to look at?

(For the record, I am for sexualized youthful girls and upskirt panty shots whenever or wherever possible.)

Eh... That would be closer, I guess, but I still disagree due to the lack of a proper skirt... In general, it just seems like some people are annoyed that we got a young cheerful female character.

It's nothing new to this series though, so I don't see where this overreaction is coming from. It's not like you're even complaining about a bunch of characters like that. So far, it's just this new ninja.

I think people are just annoyed that this is Taki's (a staple SC character from the series' very beginning) replacement. Maybe they want someone who is a little closer to her image, or a bad-ass male ninja I don't know.

Would you be happy if in Street Fighter 5 Ryu will be replaced with a young moe loli who throws fireballs? Wait, don't answer that...

I still don't know what moe is.

This is namco. I'm glad the character looks a lot different. If it was Taki in all but name, including looking similar, I'd rather they just put Taki in.

I don't see the schoolgirl here. Just a ninja with hotpants. Stupid, stupid hotpants.

Moe = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_(slang)
It should be noted that even now people can't really agree on what the word means other than a cute type.

I don't really mind the new girl she look okay but still you have option to change her look so it should be okay .
Just look at Tekken sometimes you can even tell who the person is until you fight them.

17 years later huh. fuck u japan
Yeah, I'm getting the distinct impression that all female characters will either be new or characters who mysteriously can't age.

The Taki replacement looks dumb. Give her a strong voice (not shrill or excessively bubbly), a set of customization options that isn't dominated by childish or hypersexualized attire, and an updated move list (20-30% new attacks) and we'll talk.

I hope the rest of the newcomers won't look like they're completely tanked on the vapors of hysterical youth.

I don't like the costume but I never liked Taki anyway.

But with that hair and hot pants..

So that girl in the red shorts is Taki's replacement?

Welp, Namco just shot themselves in the foot.

The hip guards are designed to look like a schoolgirl/cheerleader skirt. They removed the leg coverings and replaced the shin guards with socks to give the same impression. Combined with the bubbly teenager attitude, random ribbons and jewelry and that super girly hairdo, it's absolutely intentional.

On one hand, there's Blanka and Dhalsim weird. And that's fine. But on the other hand, there's R.Mika weird. And then we have a problem.

The only reason Blanka and Dhalsim weird is acceptable and Mika weird isn't is because Blanka and Dhalsim came first.

I don't think it's a bad design- and who knows, maybe her alt will be a Taki-style outfit, plus you can customize if you don't like.

If this girl is moe, wouldn't that make xianghua moe?

They've got a similar build and expressions.
Apparently, any cute girl is now moe. It's just like how every muscular man is now dude-bro.

THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

It doesn't have to be cute (to you) or a girl.
Anything can be moe, by its definition.

Let me put it this way, the costume isn't expressly reminiscent of a schoolgirl outfit, but incorporates the elements of schoolgirl and cheerleader outfits into Taki's ninja catsuit to suggest the youthful and bubbly personality of a really annoying highschooler. It's a deliberate design decision to push the fact that the cast is a new generation. Does that make more sense?

No, because their weirdness is inherent to their playstyle, and R.Mika's weirdness is just fanservice. Huge difference. Voldo acts and moves and looks like a freak. Same goes for Astaroth and Lizardman and Yoshimitsu and Ivy. There's a correlation between gameplay and design which is what made SC1 and 2 so intuitive. There's a disparity between new Taki and how you'd expect a ninja to compose themselves. For the record, I also disagree with Tira's design and Raphael's redesign.

I don't know why you guys make such a big deal over this. You can customize the outfits anyway. I had Ivy with her SCIII captain suit. It looked pretty much as good than if it had been available from the start.

I don't know, either. The Rule 34 is going to be epic.

This is the replacement for Taki? Taki was a serious as fuck Demon Hunter. I don't even know what to say, this character is awful.

I don't get this obsession with Japan and putting young cute girls in FIGHTING GAMES. This is serious shit, there's a fucking sword out there that has the power to destroy the world and who do you send to fight it?
A 16 year old white chick with a perky attitude that's on vacation in feudal Japan? The fuck. I'm really bummed out by this, Taki is one of my favorite characters, and to be replaced by this trash. Ugh.

This is one of the reasons why Mortal Kombat is my favorite fighting game series.

Looks like an average high school blond teenager trying to cosplay Taki.

So this game is basically going to be old geezers vs teenage girls. I guess I will be picking the old geezers this time around (Mitsurugi and Siegfriend 4 LYFE!!!).

Like Sophitia? Seong Mi-na? Talim? Cassandra? Xianghua? Amy?

Well this thread is way more entertaining than I thought it would be. Anyways, I don't like the replacement but the original wasn't that great of a design either so whatever.

As long as I can create my own hot chicks and tough guys, I'll be happy.
I loathe the Japanese tradition of coming out with feminine males and little girls in their designs.
Unfortunately for me, because Amy and Raphael are Vamps, they'll still look the same :(

I'm pretty sure she's supposed to be Asian with dyed hair.

Edit:

Specifically this pretty popular color:

Something about her says westerner to me. I'm familiar with the hair-dying but I don't think this is he case. She reminds me of asuka from eva.

Thank god I live in the West where no one dyes their hair.

And isn't Setsuka a Westerner? Maybe this chick is too. But it really doesn't matter, Soul Calibur is historical fantasy not historical fiction. Case in point:

I checked the wiki and it says this:

Biography said:
Setsuka was not a native of Japan. She had pale, milky-white skin, glossy brown hair, a chiseled face and hazel brown eyes. Those around her shunned her since she was young; she was looked with disdain because of her appearance. Without a family to turn to and exposed to such hate and violence, she finally ran away from her home. Young and alone, she wandered to a city where a man took her in, and named her Setsuka (Snow Flower).

Her caretaker worked as a bodyguard in the region. He taught Setsuka the technique he used to protect his patrons, and it would eventually become the way she protected herself, but it was the joy she felt when he praised her that made her devote to the training. Time passed, and Setsuka grew into a beautiful woman. She learned to ignore those who still looked her with disdain, letting nothing trouble her.

Birthplace: Unknown, raised in Japan
