Soulcalibur XBLA screens

Hmm... <looks at my DC hooked up via VGA to a 22" monitor>

With no online play, I'll pass on this one. SC4 all the way for me.

I have to agree with this, my DC is hooked on on the VGA input on my flatscreen, though these screenshots are crisper, the difference is small. Plus I can play it with my agetec arcade stick.

I can't speak on any of the arcade madness (because around here, arcades have always been entirely empty or just none existant) but for a console release I thought II was very solid and better than the first. But it's been years since I've played any of the two. And really don't care to jump back to playing them. I'll just stick with IV.

SC2 was slower too. SC2 has some nice things going for it but it was step down at a high level of play from the first. I'm not too worried about SCIV since it's based largely from SC3 AE and namco is watching the how the competitive community has been griping about what to fix so I'm not to pessimistic yet about the outcome.

why is the grass missing on the xbla verson?
It's not grass, it looks like an overlay from the emulator.

Looks pretty much exactly as I remember it, only with better texture filtering/AA.

I guess that explains why so many people say “Game X” looks like“Game X HD” – they have terrible memories and imagine that the older version looked a lot better than it really did.

Wow-it looks better than the DC version. AA in those screens give it a really nice clean look.
I never bought the game for the DC though, mainly because fighters bore me.
The art in this game is still very beautiful though.
Still I think I'll buy it,just to give it a sale and piss off this forum and their usual Sony led agendas.
:D

I have to agree, it looks like a pixel-perfect emulation of the original. Only, err, with more pixels. And AA. And AF.

So better than the original, then.

What were people expecting? For the game to look as good as it did in 1999?
-online mode
-native 16:9
-3d backgrounds
-scanline filter
-100 MS points
-makes cappuccino
-reads me a bedtime story
-makes me feel good about myself
-transplants my warped nostalgia into the actual game code so that it looks better than SCIV

Sadly from the looks of this thread, this isn't too far off.

NEED 360 ARCADE STICK RECOMMENDATIONS NOW!

Also, are the single player modes and unlockables at least still present from the DC port?

There's only one mass-produced one available to recommend. The Fighting Stick EX2 by Hori.
It's decent for the price.

I still say they should've released this WAY before SCIV was going to release. Much like Tekken Dark Ressurection and Tekken 6.

I totally forgot this was coming. And Samurai Showdown II is due any day, I think. Yay sword fighters! Better than regular kick/punch fighters!

Huuh!?

I wasn't even thinking about getting this when I first heard about it, since SCIV will be out too soon. But damn it if those screens don't bring back some good 'ol memories. I might have to get it after all.

Tekken 6 is starting to feel like a myth. Wasn't it planned for the PS3 launch? Is there any news or word on it lately? Publicity is strong for SC4, but T6 seems all but forgotten...

Get an XFPS any very of them and use your PS2 stick. It may cost you more in the end if you don't have a wired controller, but you can cheese that buying a used 360 gamepad cheap. I don't mind the hori stick mentioned but my last gen SC2 and T4 sticks are far better in quality than the new crap they seem to like producing better slimmer forms too.

People are playing T6 already in the arcades from what I know for testing in various spots. SC4 has had no testing just a lot of hype and if SC4 does what SC3 did it's the last from what I hear.

Soul Calibur is a great game but this practically screams "low-budget re-release" onto the XBLA. I was really expecting real HD graphics and at least widescreen. Don't know if want.

That's because T6 is tearing it up in arcades right now. There's been no mention (so far) of the console version.

!

I had no idea it was already finished and in arcades. Has there been impressions or comments from JGAF?

MarkMan's www.sdtekken.com has all your Tekken needs. :D

MarkMan slick f'n site. Thanks for the converter with that I can now take xim over to the PS3 and dominate fps just like I do 360 when I go to a friend with it.

My site of of choice for Tekeen is none other than the TekkenZaibatsu

The forums are the place to be and can get you in to tekken deeply in no time flat.

I second this. I had never even heard of sdtekken until now; I've always turned to the Zaibatsu for my fix.

Sdtekken is more for your movie fix for anything Tekken. Zaibatsu is your information traffic for in-depth character information. Both sites are great. I highly recommend using both for Tekken. Sdtekken is MarkMan's site. Support it!

So many great memories looking back at those screens, if this comes out at a fair price i'll grab it for sure dispite owning it on my DC.

wow, the soul calibur series' gameplay really hasnt changed much has it :P

i am familiar with all the attacks shown in the screenshots and i didnt play soulcaibur 1

Yes Tekken Zaibatsu is #1.

FYI, I'm admin and senior moderator of Tekken Zaibatsu too ;P

No shit, now that I think about it I do see your name familiar. I know a lot of people from Cali (met wcmaxi), chicago and the STL area as well just from the blending of tekken and soul calibur community, not even gonna bother with a debate since the intent of two titles is drastically different. If you ever go to tourney let me know gotta see your skills if you're that involved with the community. Shame I don't have time for this tekken tourney involving strippers I've been hearing about from a friend.

For the casual level no for the high level players a ton. Look at my posts on SC 2 and SC3 that come up there are a lot of differences. Even if you use the last two games, characters like cervy, ivy, taki, maxi, yoshimitsu, and talim have radically changed enough that those taking them either bolted or stayed and adjusted.

I completely agree, There is something seriously lacking in those shots. It looks like an emulated version missing the lighting and graphical effects and it just comes across very flat.

Soul Calibur DC _had_ no lighting and effects. Seriously, it was extremely flat. The only time it did something out of the ordinary was on the very simple last stage with burning Inferno.

I've got your magic solution:

it's like 1999 never ended!

First they simplified the GI system to make it more casual friendly. Hit boxes on characters since 2 were far more inconsistent than it's predcessors. Character balance that had been relatively stable now shifted because side step had become so overpowering that horizontals for some characters were useless. Stupid clash system that didn't really work as intended and infamous G2 that eventually was found in between version d and the console versions. SC2 was infamous for 5 move X, yoshimitsu/maxi being debuffed like whoa from the first, and the sisters sophie/cassy becoming broke. Astaroth/Rock are no where near as solid as they were in the first either.

Does this change the reality that I played from beta A in the arcades routinely with chicago players and then hung out with someone who had his own machine for ton of time no, but to say SC2 owns the original not in the least. SC2 was far more solid than SC3 console USA, yet arcade edition or even euro/japan version is another matter.
Preach it. Last 2 SC games are 2 of the most overrated games ever made.

Thats just wrong, People have just forgotten how good it looked in VGA. It even had bump mapping on the ground ffs.

The people who probably think this looks the same are the ones who've been playing it on Chankast which doesn't replicate the DC's hardware properly.

SDTVs did a good job of hiding some of the game's imperfections. That, and the original was released in 1999, only a year after titles like Unreal and Zelda OoT got awards for their graphics.
