SoulsGAF help me out. Dark Souls 2 or Demon Souls?

I absolutely loved Demons Souls. One of the best games ever made. Tower of Latria is GOAT level material. Oh. And get the meat cleaver

This is a weird case where I think Demon's Souls is probably holistically a better game, but I would rather play, and woudl recommend, Dark Souls 2. It's more modern, more playable, runs at 60 fps on the consoles, and the DLC is supposedly great (haven't gotten to the DLC yet!).

I went BB, to DS2:SotfS, to DS1 (DSFix 60fps HD), to Demons. Couldn't be happier with my choice. DS2 is honestly better than DS1 in my humble opinion. Less needlessly frustrating areas, better bosses for the most part, and a better narrative. I'd likely agree with the hive mind if I played them in order. Seriously, anyone who tells you DS2 sucks is a flat out wrong. Play it next!

I feel mostly the same, only I would still recommend Demon's Souls to someone who hasn't yet played either. As for myself, I would much rather replay Dark Souls II.

Completely agree, there's definitely something in the time/order you played these games.

I played BB, DS1 (60fps) and then SotFS. There are much fewer 'low points' in Scholar than DS1 for sure.

I don't think I'll ever understand why 2 is considered so much less favourably than 1. I lie awake at night pondering it.

I can't stand DS2. The engine it uses makes all movement feel wrong. The animations feel off compared to what I'm used to after DeS, DS, and BB.
I can't believe From hasn't just applied the 60fps fix to the original Dark Souls and ported that to consoles. Seems like easy money for them.

Giving an update on how I'm doing. Great game, really loving it. Some of the concepts like equip burden do get frustrating at times but the game is so brilliant that I can easily forgive the few flaws that it have.

I think I've complete 3 Archstones. I have defeated
"Dragon God"
,
"Storm King"
and
"Old King Allant".

Currently trying to get through Valley Of Defilement,
5-2
to be exact and I'm having a little difficulty getting past
Giant Depraved Ones
. Can you guys give me any tips on them? I've used fire, almost every kind of arrows, sticky white stuff, etc etc. But nothing seems to really work. I can handle them if I'm up against one at a time and I'm on dry land but that
swamp
area with two of them and a few normal
Depraved Ones
is really killing me.

I'm level is 72-ish. My melee weapon is
Dragon Bone Smasher
and I'm using
White Bow
as well, both of which have worked great for almost every kind of enemy that I've seen thus far, except these
Giant Depraved Ones
.

I don't know. I feel like I'm missing something obvious here.

Demons Souls is the best overall and most consistent game in the franchise. It has aged very well and also runs in 720p, unlike the successor. Bloodborne has the best combat and DS2 the best Pvp. Dark Souls has the best beginning but falls off a cliff towards the end.

Oh well, best franchise in gaming today.

Edit: wise choice, op. The enemies you mention are tough. I suggest baiting one out with a bow and then try to dodge as much as possible. Always wear light armor. Using a blessed weapon and regen ring + regen shield also does wonders to break poison.
Obviously fighting outside the dry area is death.

Well you don't have to fight them but then you will have to deal with being poisoned throughout the majority of the level but you can find some good weapons and gear in that area if your willing to be poisoned. They are pretty weak to fire so you can use either something like the Lava Bow with fire arrows or a dragon weapon. Pull them one at a time to a fight able area and kill them. That's basically the way I deal with them other than just avoiding them entirely.

Edit: You can also use the fire spray spell. You only need one slot for it and you use the spell while walking backwards. Its pretty useful for this area.

Disregarding preference you should start with demon souls. The game was the first one and has a different style to all the following successors.

Thanks guys. I'll try to bait one of them at a time and see what happens. I like being a warrior in souls series (and RPG games is general) so I haven't spend any time building up my magic which means fire spells and the like are out of question.

And regarding armor, I actually wanted to ask this as well, but where can I find some? I remember having a lot of different armor sets in both Dark Souls and Bloodborne but it seems like I can barley find any in Demon's. I think I only have three sets of them and they are pretty bad so I'm still using the default set that you have from the start of the game.

Armor isn't all that important as long as you don't fat roll in my opinion. For 5-2 I would suggest using the black leather set as it has a high poison resistance. Also a good overall armor.

Edit: You can use the Ring of Great Strength if you want to put on some heavier armor and still keep your flexibility.

You should play both OP.

Start with DeS, it's the beginning of the series and deserves to be played...

...but it's also short so you'll probably be hungry for more and get DS2 aswell.

Thanks for your suggestions. I finally managed to get through that area. Used the armor that you said and it made going through
swamp
a lot easier.

I actually beat the
Dirty Colossus
in my first try as well :)

Dark souls is my GOAT but I didn't like demons souls very much. I actually played it first and it was close but just didn't quite click. Then I played dark souls unlocked some shortcuts and felt the real magic of the series. If rank them DS>BB>dS2>demon souls.

Demons had the best art work and maybe the crazy load times helped beat its reputation with me but I liked it the least by far. Still a very good game though

I like Dark 2 the most of the two, but the atmosphere in Demon's is stellar. I really should beat it considering the ridiculous amount of playthroughs of Dark 1&2 and BB I have. I got Demon's at launch and have played and restarted many times but always stop for some reason. Some day I will beat more than half of Demon's Souls.

I see OP has already decided, but if I may chime in. I agree that order of play can add an interesting layer to the experience, specifically after completing DeS you'll really start to notice the similarities and differences in level themes across the first three games. However I don't feel there's a "right" order and both games are quite brilliant on their own (for me Dsk2 pvp alone wiped the floor with so much of the sludge that came out that yr).

Quickly comparing the two:
DeS:
Shorter but more open ended.
Level progression maintains a better pace and gives stuck players plenty of options.
All the individual parts came together to hold a darker atmosphere throughout that neither Dark Souls games really managed (DeS NPCs in particular come to mind).
Tendency system is interesting and warrants extra playthroughs.

Dsk2:
Someone hit the nail on the head with "more of everything", weapons, armour, game time, covenants (everything except certain aspects of level design).
Production values (SOTFS esp) are high across the board.
DLC are not to be scoffed at.
Best multiplayer implementation in a souls game thus far, on this alone I've spent far more hrs in Dsk2 than any other Souls title.

Finally beat the game. Really enjoyed my time with it. Even few of the levels and bosses became some of my favorites in the entire series. (especially Tower of Latria).

Although, I can't help but feel that it was a little easier than DS and Bloodborne. Especially towards the end I felt way too OP. I managed to beat every boss of the third world in my first try. Same with the last boss which to me felt quite disappointing especially after the breathtaking fight that we had the first time around.

Aside from that and a few not so very good mechanics that I mentioned in my earlier posts, DeS was a really enjoyable experience. It didn't become my favorite in the series (that place still belongs to Dark Souls) as it seems to be for some of you guys, but I'm really happy that I finally got to play the one that started it all :)

So thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

P.S: To the people that suggested DSII, I wanna thank you guys as well. I will definitely check that out some other time down the line, though I might decide to get the SotFS edition on PS4 since I currently only have the vanilla version on PS3.

You can buy some of it off vendors and others you have to find throughout the world or defeating certain enemies. But I honestly wouldn't worry too much about armors. Demons is like Bloodborne, its all about dat fashion souls so just wear whatever you think looks good.

Edit: nvm. Congrats on beating the game. You can play Scholar of the First Sin on ps4 now. I think you'll like it a lot.

When picking up a franchise i prefer chronological order.

I would suggest playing Demon Soul's first, then hopping in DS2 to see the improvements and changes they've done over the past years
