Did you beat FF13? I tried. I really did. It bored me to tears at about 25 hours in and I just gave up. The music never really did anything for me and I fell asleep playing it twice :|
Yeah I did beat and kinda enjoyed some of the endgame parts. The story was stupid it really lost that FF feel to it and just became some modern bs, but I kinda enjoyed the graphics and music enough to follow through.

The FF franchise does not need reinvention Squenix does thought. It as they have a new gen of gaming platforms to do there stuff on a grander scale and they just made a beautiful game with no substance. If they really made the game we are waiting for; with a extensinve over world, a movable ship like in the old ones, good story similar to classic FF lore not some modern copout. Then we could have a game worth owning.

Say what you will about the game, but FF XIII had the OST of the year.
I'd have to agree.

However, I think this is my single favorite song this year:
Belmont Theme from Castlevania LoS

Red Dead Redemption gets a runner up for me:

This was one of the highlights of the entire game, just how it started playing. I was shocked how well it fit. It was beautiful. :lol
I'm still mad about this...I got off my horse before the song ever started playing. Supposedly that causes the song to not play. Missed the awesome moments :(

Haven't played Nier, heard its mediocre. Too many other good games to play. If the soundtrack is as good as some of you are suggesting, I might look into it someday.

If your not saying Nier, you haven't played Nier. It's the soundtrack of the generation.
I don't understand why more people are not saying NieR. It makes no sense to say anything else.

It's amazing, but not for everyone. And I would still rate other soundtracks higher, such as Halo: Reach and Alan Wake (a superb example of a good licensed soundtrack).

Is this a joke? Otherwise your high and mighty attitude can piss off.

I played Nier and I just don't share the soundtrack love. I thought it was pretty meh. Just like the game. Actually the soundtrack didn't stand out to me as anything interesting, just typical Japanese rpg music.

Anyway

This year the Soundtracks I enjoyed were:

FFXIII-My favorite mostly because I feel the tracks are pretty unique for games. Orchestrated ,but not too bombastic. They fit where they go and convey the right feelings.

Awesome battle theme that really captures FFXIII's battles. Battles that feel very sweeping and can change tides whenever.

The final battle theme is excellent and sounds like fighting a deity type music. It's also whimsical on account that the theme of fate is abound.

The Sunleth Waterscape just feels like a fun song for the environment it plays in.

No More Heroes 2-Mostly because the soundtrack is just fun, varied, and off kilter form the norm.
Philistine
Subata.1
Killed or Be Killed
Money Shot

Persona 3 Portable-Though honestly I find anything Meguro makes to be top quality. He just makes music I like. I like more rock popish sounds and he produces music close to that.
Time
Wiping All Out

My personal faves:
-Mass Effect 2 (love that sci fi moody stuff)
-Super Meat Boy (World 2 is incredible...please try to argue this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9xsT6eiBYQ)
-VVVVVV (8bit-ish awesomeness)

...oops almost forgot about SHATTER

Came here to say exactly this.

Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV and Shatter are the only game soundtracks I have ever bought. One place where indie games are far ahead of other games.

How many "Best OST of The Year" threads do we need? Whatever, here goes...

Final Fantasy XIII
Mario Galaxy 2
and Metal Gear Solid PW... and a few others...

These are all candidates. The winner is definitely Nier. It was different and awesome. No need for samples, people already posted enough.

Partially a joke, partially serious. It is a damn good soundtrack. One you need to listen to as you've said you haven't heard it.

What? Did you play on mute? You can love the soundtrack, you can hate it or anywhere in between, but it is objectively incorrect to say it's like other JRPG soundtracks. It is a strikingly unique collection of vocal pieces if nothing else.

Yeah...best to leave it alone. Rah's got some weird beef with a handful of games.

Really? Prove it. You probably wont be able to. Because it's not objectively incorrect anything. It's all a matter opinion. I can't really prove factually my point either. I can say things like "songs such as the battle music and town music sound like typical jrpg fare" ,but that's obviously not going to sit well with you. Likewise, just because it's got some vocal tracks that (IMO aren't that unique as well) dosen't really sway my opinion that outside of them it was pretty forgettable for me. I don't even have one song on my ipod. I have the whole OST of Unlimited Saga.

Disliking games and posting is having beef now? Well everyone must have beef with FFXIII then.

By my count, over 2/3 of the game's soundtrack is comprised of vocal tracks. I would say that could be factually proven to be atypical of JRPGs. Other points of difference are of course far more subjective, but I'd say that such a niche game attracting such a disproportionate number of mentions in this thread would suggest that Nier's sound is anything but indistinct. You don't have to agree, of course; these threads would be of little interest if the community didn't hold diverse opinions.

I should get around to playing Nier with all the soundtrack love it is getting here. It's only $12.99 at GameStop used, or $14.99 new.

Lors of good ones already mentionned.

My favorite is probably Nier. Great tracks, and even greater when they play in powerful key scenes in the game. Just wow.

Honorable mention for Super Mario Galaxy 2 too.
