It can be both. Are you sure, it seemed like the conversation with between her and Robinson facilitated her wanting to see her old partner.
When Lydia was arguing with Robinson about the dirty cops she said she wanted a partner that would go the distance with her, and Robinson said it was probably time to move on to a new partner. And the scene right before she sees Russel, Robinson said she tries hard to push people away and he wont go anywhere.

He let her take the fall initially for the pictures he sold for 250K. Hence the schism/lack of contact.Did Lydia kick Russ out? Can't remember this stuff...my memory...

This is S2 I think.Holy shit maybe I should rewatch the first season. No idea what pictures you're talking about.
Sherman is a dick.
Best show! I hope we see Sherman team up with Regina King next season.
Tonight's episode is cray cray. It's titled "Southland'...could this be goodbye? :-(
Holy Windows 8!
Shit that was tough to watch.
Damn that sucks Lucero didn't even patch things up with his family and Cooper.
Glad Cooper was spared. Hopefully the finale might be about catching/killing Lucero's killer.
Those screams, wow.
This show is incredibly underrated.
