The cop kicked his f-up son out of his life and never got to see him alive again. Russ is a similar situation for Lydia.
Are you sure, it seemed like the conversation with between her and Robinson facilitated her wanting to see her old partner.
When Lydia was arguing with Robinson about the dirty cops she said she wanted a partner that would go the distance with her, and Robinson said it was probably time to move on to a new partner. And the scene right before she sees Russel, Robinson said she tries hard to push people away and he wont go anywhere.
It can be both.
Did Lydia kick Russ out? Can't remember this stuff...my memory...
He let her take the fall initially for the pictures he sold for 250K. Hence the schism/lack of contact.

You know what fucking pisses me off? This is one of THE best shows on the air and no one's talking about it. Not even in a "well, the live audience is small, but there's a huge internet fandom!"
This is the greatest cop show on TV and one of the finest dramas in the past decade. I can only hope that after TNT unceremoniously cancels it that it'll find life 10, 20, 30 years in the future on Netflix or whatever we have then. This show is masterful.
