SP is about to feel what ND felt in 2020

There's a thread for discussing Yotei's dev mocking Kirk's death, there's no need to create other threads to talk about it. We were granted some leeway to discuss those things, which are somewhat political, so let's just keep it to those two threads.
This thread is not to discuss that anyway.
The discussion is about the cultural discrepancy between game developers (specifically writers and art/character designers) and people that discuss, generate hype and buy videogames.
These two groups used to be closely culturally aligned, but in many cases are not anymore.
This is a real problem and is causing financial failures, uncertain outcomes for publishers and eventually, job losses and studio shutdown in the game industry.

This kind of amuses me, but not in a good way.
Sucker Punch must have thought they were geniuses when their underhyped, under-cooked Assassin's Creed clone became a surprise hit.
But the biggest surprise wasn't that the game found an audience, it's that the audience it found were migrants because of cultural ideas.
This audience fled one of the most hyped sequels of all time, because of their disagreement with the game's director.
Now, it's 2025, and those same cultural migrants that "fled" from Naughty Dog are preparing to flee from Sucker Punch too.

Sony is probably about to lose a lot of money again. And it seems that they're not structured to handle this kind of fan backlash.
I wonder if there's a market for consultancies that helps with "keeping politics out of games".
I'm pretty sure execs in the industry would love that.

You can frame it however you want, it's still about Charlie Kirk. You wouldn't have made this thread if he hadn't been assassinated and the dev hadn't gleed about it.

OP is also disregarding big overseas sales, where players literally aren't bothered.

Overseas will be interesting - when you exclude Fifa, the biggest selling game in Europe this year was Shadows. Do consumers have the appetite for more than one third person - complete the map - samurai game in one year?

I would say yes because there is literally nothing else. Every big release third-person action was avoiding GtA - there's no competition.

What ND felt? Creating the best game of all time?
Great count me in for Ghost of Yotei. Wasn't convinced before but now I am.

Gamers like more than one genre though, and there's limited money most of the time, and so I can see some people going for BF6 over Yotei, especially after the very successful beta.

I like the gameplay but the story of TLoU2

I think the gameplay is spectacular. I would love for every game to have the same exact weight and feedback to their actions and all of those little details that are attached to it like the individual NPC breathing patterns.
It is probably the best gameplay ever in terms of how weighted and grounded to reality it feels while still being able to be a video game that feels greatly rewarding for playing well.

The story and game pacing overall isn't as clean as it could be.

One employee out of 200 said something, so now they all gotta crash and burn?
Another $400M down the drain for Sony?
If you are unable to see the bigger picture, I am unable to entertain you more.

Have you been to Germany since 2017?:messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_winking_tongue:

Yes, my wife is from Löningen which is safe for now, but I have been to Düsseldorf in 2018 to see a friend and see the infection was setting in there. Wife went to Hamburg for Christmas markets Dec 2023 and was quite upset at how things were, stay strong out there 💪🟢.

I can already see the reviews now praising the game and giving all the credit to the POS developer that SP (rightly) fired. Gaming "journalists" won't be able to help themselves, and they will be falling over each other to praise the game and the work that the POS did on it.

I expect the majority of reviewers to give the game a 9/10 because of this, but player reviews will be a lot more critical - probably somewhere in the 7.5/8 range. Decent game, but largely a reskin of Ghost of Tsushima.

What the hell are you on about lmao.

Respectfully, if you think it's one out of 200, you haven't been paying attention. It's far, far, FAR more than one. This industry consists of this rot all over. Sony studios seems to have more of it and they're openly admitting it.

The "bigger picture" is for these sick individuals to stop wishing and celebrating death against me and my family who has a slightly different opinion or world view. Just please don't insult me by saying that's not happening... It's a blatant lie.

It's disgusting and many of these studios developers and even execs aren't saying anything because a good majority of them agree with their mentally ill former employees.

I see what your saying and I agree. But i will say that last of us 2 was a extremely cutting edge game pushing the envelope so damn far that even the biggest haters couldn't deny the appeal from a games perspective. Yotei absolutely looks like a DLC with an insufferable MC and terrible PR

And let's not forget that if this had been a conservative dev saying something even remotely controversial, Sucker Punch would have been falling all over themselves to release a statement saying that the "Developer's views do not represent the views of Sucker Punch, etc..."

That hasn't happened here, and it speaks volumes.

Yes, it looks more like a DLC than a new game. Yes, there is girlboss fatigue, but at the end of the day those things wouldn't have hurt sales that much, simply because there's hunger for Sony first party output. The fallout from that one dev will definitely hurt sales more than the game just being lazy and woke. The people who you bizarrely call "cultural migrants" are the anti-woke and anti-far-left. The very same people who don't want to support a studio that endorses assassination. I cancelled my pre-order over it, even though I had gotten a really good price on it. I just got Trails in the Sky and there's BF6 in a few weeks, I can easily go without playing Yotei. It's been 5 years since I played Tsushima so if I really have an itch to play an open world Samurai game, I can just go play that. I know there are others like me. I still think the game will do okay sales-wise but probably not as good as it could have.

How is she a terrorist?
Trump literally said yesterday that he is going to designate Antifa a terrorist organization, and she posted on social media that she (and her wife) is Antifa. By definition that will make her a terrorist. No different than claiming to be part of Hamas.

Man Sony exclusives always bring out the best posts over the last few years lmao.
You fanboy crybabies always try to play or make Sony the victim, this isn't about console wars.

Isn't that ironic? :pie_smirking:

That says more about about Trump than about the actress lol.

1 has actually sold closer to 30 millions, counting remasters.
As somebody who really loved TLoU2, I, like many lived in denial about its successfulness.
While 10 millions sounds like a lot, raw sales numbers are irrelevant without considering expected sales.
The Last of Us was Sony's crown jewel, and in following up that destined success the sequel failed spectacularly.
That's the reason we haven't heard anything about number 3.
It's simply not on Sony's list of releases they believe will be successful.
Now that the shows second season also lost a lot of momentum, the franchises future looks even more certain.
It's probably dead and gone forever, sadly.

Certain people who don't believe in truth as a matter of principle are definitively not going to want to believe that.

Why would it bite me in the ass? I'm not a terrorist, terrorist sympathizer, or supporter. That's sounds like a you problem.

This is not my problem either, but the problem of people who throw these terms around left and right without considering their scope or consequences.

In my personal opinion, the president is not a terrorist, nor is someone who supports a group or ideology but is not burdened with documented proof of any illegal activity related to it.

I also do not sympathize with terrorists, i do not support them, most often i am utterly disgusted by them.

If we agree on that, then we're not that far apart morally, so we shouldn't be jumping at each other's throats over something like that.

Therefore, have a nice day.

I think there's probably a pretty good argument to be made that the formula is the cause of the bloat.

I'd much rather have a shorter linear game than a bloated open-world one at this point.
I'd argue that the big push for people asking for longer and longer games over the last couple decades was a big cause of it. People started reviewing games poorly based on length alone for a while there and what we got were artificially inflated sacks of shit as a result. I agree with you though, I'd 100% take a stellar 20 hour single player game over a 100 hour bloat fest.

I don't think this is correct. The reaction to TLOU2 was a result of the leak as well as people having nothing better to do but yell online. It was a very weird time.

I think Yotei is going to come and go and be disappointing sales and reaction wise. Sony might miss out on that coveted GOTY nomination for the first time in like a decade.
