Not sure which dub you saw, but I'd say Spaceballs is better in English for sure, at least compared to the German dub, which is the one I know and was how I watched the film first of course as a kid. the German dub is decent on a technical and performance level... but some jokes just don't translate well and had to be replaced (jammed radar doesn't work for example).

Generally you are right, but the Möter joke is clearly superior over the Mog original. I think it all comes down to the creativity of the dubbing team/translators.
Like for example the Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies are all superior in German due to the Schnodderdeutsch dub.
But stuff like that would be simply impossible with modern movies where licence holders control everything.

there are 2 moments in Spaceballs that are funnier in german, "Möter, halb Mensch, halb Köter, und mein bester Freund", and at the end where they find the liquid Schwartz, which in german is of course flüssiger Saft which somehow totally surprises them that flüssiger Saft (Liquid Juice) exists.

you'll often find moments in dubs that are better than the og, like in Ritter der Kokosnuss (Monty Python's Holy Grail) the fight against the black knight is funnier in german due to the quips being ever so slightly changed.
after he got both arms cut off:
"you got no arms left!"
"yes I have!"
"look!"
"just a flesh wound!"

in german:
"du hast keine arme mehr!"
"wer sagt das?"
"na kratz dich mal!"
"ist doch nur ne Fleischwunde!"

but generally the majority of comedy movies are better in the original language. Terence Hill and Bud Spencer movies are a rare exception here, but some of their earlier ones are questionable as well. some of the more serious westerns were dubbed multiple times, where the later dubs completely ruined the movies by trying to turn them into comedy films, when the originals were just normal westerns.

Hell, I would argue this is one of the greatest comedy movies. Just so many laugh-out-loud moments. Makes me want to hit a joint and watch the move again.

This is one of my favorite scenes.
