Spartacus appreciation thread

This show somehow ruined Game of Thrones for me. Spartacus just has a much better cast of characters and it feels like something interesting happens in each episode that moves the plot, whereas Game of Thrones has ten times the amount of characters but doesn't rival the audience's investment or payoff.

Hopefully Andy's crowdfunded documentary turns out to be bad ass.

Where's the Oenomaus love? Surely, I can't be the only one who recognizes his badassness.

Fantastic show.

For those who don't like Vengeance, you do have to keep in mind that it was a continuation of Andy's story, that's pretty much why it falls flat with Liam in the role. War of the Damned is much better as it feels like a fresh story and allows for Liam to embrace the character as he's not stuck with having to wrap up a story from a past season.

Saying that, Vengeance is absolutely the weakest season, but I can forgive any issues as it was clearly written with Andy in mind and his absence really drags it down.

Definitely one of the highlights of Season 1 and GOTA. I think his character grew less interesting the more the show focused on the slave rebellion.
Yeah, in season 1 he existed in the interesting space of being a slave himself but also having a large amount of authority over the other slaves. He had a kindhearted side but didn't hesitate to punish those who stepped out of line. Once he was removed from this space he lost a lot of what made him interesting.

Season 1 of Spartacus is one of my favorite seasons of TV ever which is amazing since I was about to write it off as a 300 rip off during the first 3 episodes. The last episode of that season is sooooo satisfying. The rest of the seasons I still love despite it never reaching the same heights.

Andy Whitfield's death hit me harder than any celebrity death of my 30 years. It's weird. I don't know if it was because he seemed like such a nice dude, or the fact that he had a family and kids, or because it seemed like he was ok after the first cancer scare, or the fact that he was such an amazing newcomer and I was excited to see him in more roles (I thought he would have made the perfect CDR Shephard in a Mass Effect movie). I'm sure it was all of the above. Though he wasn't as magnetic, I thought Liam did great stepping in to a role that Andy owned so hard though. Big shoes to fill.

And yeah, fuck Naevia
in that last season. Her warrior-woman-take-no-shit-act-before-thinking-and-grimace-24-7 shtick got old and annoying real fast. I couldn't wait for her to die.

I've started watching this. I can't get over Xena acting like a trollop with a potty mouth. It's like watching Buffy in Cruel Intentions.

when he first appeared in the show (was it Ep.2? The show was still struggling a bit at that point) my initial reaction was "LOLOLOL it's that dude from the THIS IS SPARTA meme!"
He quickly became one of my favorite characters and an actor I like a great deal.

Be here now.
RIP Andy.

Such a great show. The new Spartacus wasn't as good as Andy Spartacus but he did a pretty good job overall. Bat and Ashur were the absolute two best "villains" ever.

I hated the new Spartacus, stuck with the show though to the end despite my dislike for such a poor lead after the perfect job Andy did god rest his soul. Caesar was awesome and damn near saved it for me.

Yeah they were great and I completely agree with the quotes you put on villains. Everything they did was centered around elevating their own position and sometimes this had them doing seemingly generous or helpful things, Batiatus especially. He expressed respect for Spartacus and granted him perks for being the best but maintained a firm grip on the leash. Every move he made was calculated and he rarely did bad things just to do them.

Season 1 spoilers tagged just in case.
I actually believed he was trying to find Sura because he wanted Spartacus to be at his best. I didn't see her death coming and I really didn't see Batiatus being behind it. That episode had two of the best twists I'd ever experienced because I was totally convinced I had it figured out based on who I thought Batiatus was. So good.

I've still only seen season 1, with the rest on my backlog. I will see them eventually.

The shield tap in the finale of season 1 was one of few "jump out of my seat" moments I've experienced in television.

Awww man... that was so good.

Come back here and tell us how you feelt after the last episode.

JUPITER YES! 2nd season she was just kind of annoying and a drag. 3rd season she becomes a full on bitch. I mean her character arc makes complete sense for what happens to her but she became completely annoying because of it.
I think it would have been better if the same woman played her. Since they recast her for whatever reason it made her feel more like a new character instead of an evolution of an existing one. Season 1 Naevia was sweet and timid and I would have loved to see that same actress incorporate all the pain the character went through into her performance.

It's a good guilty pleasure. The prequel season is eaily the best season, closely followed by the final season. Though I'd argue a semi-historically correct Spartacus show would've been more interesting, because then we wouldn't have to deal with the annoying "FREE EVERY SLAVE"-attitude. The real-life Spartacus was all about tearing shit up and getting the fuck out of Roman territory and couldn't give a rat's ass about freeing slaves or abolishing slave trade.

I stopped watching after season 2. The lack of Andy changed too much in the show for me and I couldn't continue.

Still need to watch GotA though.

Thats why the real Spartacus turned back south even when he had the opportunity to cross the Alps.
