Speaking in tongues -- anyone experienced it?

I'm glad I went to a normal church growing up. And by normal I mean just one filled with old mildly racist and hateful old people and not any of this tongues shit or the pastor saying "if you listen or watch anything but fox news you burn in hell!"

I've seen people do this. Nobody I actually know, though. Honestly I've always believed it's either mental illness or attention seeking. Until it can be proven otherwise I'm going to be skeptical.

I'm open to the possibility of anything though, monks can pull off some pretty amazing things (that have been scientifically proven to happen) with their bodies through meditation. I don't believe that stuff is supernatural though, just people learning to do things most other people can't.

I mean, if someone is in the middle of Target speaking in Tongues it's most likely a deeply religious person going through a bout of psychosis or something.

But if it's *in* a church where it's members go through the whole "speaking in tongues" and "faith healing" thing then it's just groupthink. People do it because it's expected of them.

In case anyone else is as interested as I am in analysing every aspect of this video, I made a transcript of exactly what she's saying:

"Ramu shev amakasu in the name of Jesus.
You be made whole by the power of God.
Mo sha resi kama bahoto ray a hessaday yana dama hossaday"

I wonder if anyone 'in the know' on GAF might be able to help me translate this?

I remember when I was young and in a Evangelical church. On a campout with the youth group (the royal rangers) we had a service where people were being encouraged to speak in tongues. The way it was phrased the lord would speak through anyone who wanted him to, all you needed to do was believe. As the staff walked through the crowd I became more and more distressed as seemingly everyone was able to have the lord speak through them... other than me. Eventually I got so frustrated and upset I began crying out in despair asking why God wouldn't work through me... only to have a staff member congratulate me, telling me how awesome it was to see me speaking in tongues. I do not remember ever being more upset.

That was the first time I questioned my Christianity. In hindsight, I'm glad I had such an experience to expedite my departure from the religion.
