Speed Racer (2008) is incredible

Absolutely incredible film. Beautiful to look at, and with some of best feels for me in Cinema. I was virtually off of my seat cheering on Speed in the final race.

I'd happily stand up and be counted regarding the quality of this film.

I never got why people say this movie is soulless. As much as how ironic it is about "corporations vs little guys", it is a movie full of heart about family sticking together.

I find it hilarious when people throw out terms like "failure". A movie is a failure now if RT's aggregate score isn't high enough for them to argue with people on forums. While the reality is majority of critics on RT are amateurs with no real credibility. Clicks are all that matters not well thought out opinions and arguments.

Cloud Atlas is a masterpiece. Time will do most of the Wachowskis work justice. I don't have a single doubt in my mind about that. But for now i'll sit back and listen to people argue how something like Dr Strange was a good movie because RT said it was "fresh".

I would go as far as to say that calling it soulless is objectively wrong.

It was a flop at the box office too unfortunately. So I guess in that way it was a failure. But it's clear that some people do like the movie, plenty here do and I doubt that the only people in the world that liked Speed Racer has a NeoGAF account.

I'm also with you when it comes to RT. I'm convinced that anyone that knows even a little bit about filmmaking and can articulate an opinion using words can become a certified critic on RT. There's fucking Youtube reviewers on RT. Now I'm not saying that they're all without merit or whatever, but people treat the percentile like a score.

Literally my favorite movie. Watched it on acid with friends a few months ago and we were all crying over how awesome it was by the end. Criminally underrated movie.

Definitely one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
It's mindblowingly bad.

Why does no one ever explain why with this movie? Also you're objectively wrong in a world where movies like Jack and Jill or Batman vs Superman exist.

RT has turned into a fucking joke, and a corporate tool. There's been theories thrown around about how much weight RT has in the film industry, and how people like Spielberg have attempted to throw around his muscle lately because he thinks films in general are in serious danger. He's been worried if a few tentpole blockbusters tanked that the whole industry could come crumbling down.

It makes a lot of sense why complete turds like Force Awakens, and some of these paint by numbers Marvel flicks get such high praise on aggregate sites like RT.

It has no redeeming quality for me, not much to explain.
And yeah, I think it's worse than those but keep telling me I'm objectively wrong.
Hell, you're telling me it's your favorite movie which means you consider it better than all the true masterpieces the medium has given us and you're telling ME that I'm objectively wrong? Lol, ok.

Hey now we were real good until this :p

i'm totally ok with people enjoying the film for what it was but to say it was a good movie in real terms, well, come on.

if all it takes is to throw insane amounts of nostalgia over some action set pieces and a few comedic lines then god damn i should be a director because filmmaking just got a whole lot easier.

i'm 100% positive J.J Abrams knows what he created, and knows he dodged a serious bullet. I don't think he believed he could get away with it, and when he did, he was fucking stunned. Just look at his face leading up to the release.

I love this movie so much. I was a huge fan of the cartoon as a kid and this movie really captured the feel for me. I'd go so far to say it's the best big screen translation of a cartoon.

And definitely one of the prettiest films ever.

If only the races weren't small fractions of the picture. Most of the film is otherwise an awful slog of boring garbage to sit through. I really can't agree with the cult of fans that call it a good film.

I bought into the hype that it's an underrated masterpiece and left extremely underwhelmed. There are some good things but they are way too far and few in-between IMO.

What do you mean? There's a man who was beaten bloody and 2 minutes later a guys finger gets eaten by piranhas with blood flowing in the water. I doubt 'shit' is that bad

Cursing usually bumps a movie up to PG-13 with some weird exceptions

And yeah the violence in Speed Racer is pretty up there too

As someone who never watched the original Speed Racer anime back in the day, I don't really understand how people are calling the 2008 movie some sort of nostalgia hitpiece. It's a good movie in its own right. Loud colors, interesting and varied transitions between scenes, and some of the craziest race scenes since REDLINE. The Racer family was convincing in a way that most movies still fail to manage. Idk how anyone can call this movie "soulless".

me sliding in whenever someone mentions the SPEED RACER movie

Fucking love this movie with all of my heart since the day I saw it, and i'm always so glad on here and in plenty of other film communities, it's pretty much beloved. Mind-blowing and incredibly inventive visuals and action sequences, and with a helluva lot of emotion and all around earnestness to it that many blockbusters don't tend to have. Two of the best scenes, even over all of the various action ones, are two seprate scenes with Speed and each of his parents. Goodman and Surandon completely sell the bond with their son, and the love and support they have for what he does, and it's very heartfelt and sincere. I wish Pops and Mom were my, pops and, mom. The entire family element really makes this movie, aside from those, of course, dope-ass action scenes. Those Wachowskis have such a natural eye for style, and spectacle. i swear. Other than maybe the business plots could've use a bit of streamlining, this movie's pretty much perfect as sliced bread. My only goal in life is to my own IMAX 3D screen and marathon this, TRON: LEGACY, PACIFIC RIM, and DOCTOR STRANGE on it. Maybe try some LSD for the first and last time, as I would probably die from the visual overload.

Literal eye candy. Wasn't into the story but the visuals were tasty.

One the reviews of Speed Racer that stuck with me was a critique of the visuals, which was described as "like having molten Jolly Ranchers poured into your eyes." It was meant as a negative, but I had to laugh at how true that statement was.

My mum was in the movie. I was at the premier to this film.

This movie sucked. I liked what it was trying to do, but the visuals (while "vibrant") are not easy to look at. There is so much going on, it gets difficult to watch it without a head ache. Then the story and the script...

The movie makes you feel. You can't say that about a lot of movies. I'm one of those that was at the edge of my seat at the end, pulling for speed, holding my breath, heart lodged in my throat.

I can get why people were repulsed by it. It's tone was confusing. But for people like me, that bought in, it's an emotionally satisfying film.

I haven't watched the whole thing but it's hard to figure out what's going on in the races. Everything is spinning and cuts are jumping all over. Gimme a second to process what you're trying to show me I mean some of those clips are like Taken 3 jumping over the fence.

Could not disagree more. Everything is fast yes, but the cuts are done well so you can still have an idea of what's going on. Do you want everything in slomo instead?

"Oh my god, was that a ninja?"

"More like a NON-ja. Terrible what passes for a ninja these days."

Best film. I wish I could have seen it in IMAX.
