How can he be so intelligent with math and spelling but be so socially incompetant. Surely that takes intelligence, too? You'd think common social sense and an understanding of comedy and the way people converse and go about themselves would be much easier to pick up than something as complicated as mathematics.

well, the problem is he was obviously never exposed to it, like math. His parents really dropped the ball.

Well, I just seriously wonder about his mental state and if there is something physically wrong with him, or if this is purely a result of social conditioning.

He's 13 and yet his response to Kimmel's suggestion that he might steal dirty magazines was rather... well, blank.

I don't think it's only the parents, this kid really may have Asperger's... He's unable to talk about things that are outside his scope of interest. Just run down this checklist

* Narrow interests or preoccupation with a subject to the exclusion of other activities
* Repetitive behaviors or rituals
* Peculiarities in speech and language
* Extensive logical/technical patterns of thought
* Socially and emotionally inappropriate behavior and interpersonal interaction
* Problems with nonverbal communication
* Clumsy and uncoordinated motor movements

That was hard to watch. :lol :lol :lol

I love how she threw him a bone by lying to him, telling him that he got the word right :lol

:lol @ the spelling bee on Jimmy Kimmel .... I figured his parents would be pissed they're just ****ing with him on national TV but then they cut to them and they're laughing

I don't think there's anything wrong with the kid. He has his quirks, but other than that he's just very intelligent for his age and doesn't respond well to the normal way society talks to kids his age (like retards). Being as well educated as he is he doesn't quite get the 'simplified' and irrelevant jokes/questions he's asked.

Just a case of being very intelligent at a young age.

Maybe he is home-schooled because his social development was stunted at an early age and he wouldn't have been successful in a normal school environment?

I finally actually tried to watch this for the first time but I only got one minute in and then had to stop. I need a shot of vodka....

How can their be two mintues more...

You guys really need to rent "Spellbound". It's a documantary about kids preparing for and then competing in the National Spelling Bee. It's 100% real but plays out like a Christopher Guest film and is filled with kids like this. There's a kid from New Jersey in there who really really reminds me of this kid.

did anyone notice how he keeps staring to nothing while people talk to him?
he must have some kind of anomaly

I do this. Its hard to explain why (I'm also told I might have aspergers). It simply doesn't make instictive sense why I should have to. Looking at someone does not somehow make the words coming out of their mouth make more sense.

I'm better about it now that I'm older but only because I focus on forcing myself to do it. But its still not instinctive, its 'oh shit I haven't been making eye contact they probably think I'm not listening.'

LOL at the people calling him a retard when their IQ probably isn't even half of his

High IQ, low EQ?

That second Kimmel youtube is hilarious. But I felt kind of sorry for him. And yeah, what's up with the parents? It's kind of like, "haha look at our dorky, kid." Maybe they don't "get it" either.

At first I thought he was mentally retarded, but wow, that kid is gonna have it hard when all that homeschooling ends.

i really hope that all this media exposure equips him with enough basic social skills to realise he needs to get the fuck away from his parents as soon as possible.

These youtube videos are going to haunt him the rest of his life. Think about it... when he'll be in his 20s, he gonna get jobs, and the first thing his colleagues will do is send around these videos. It's really the parents' mistake, in the end, I think. If their choice to expose the kid on TV so much.

Agreed. He's 13 now and odds are he'll be a virgin for at least 13 more years the way things are going. GTFO while you still can kid. Sheltering parents FTL.

:[ <--- This is the face I was making when watching the video.

EDIT: And no, I can't face Part 2.

God some videos of these other spelling bee contestants make this guy look like a ****ing social butterfly. Whats up with the girl that covers her mouth after every letter? Im gonna have ****ing nightmares about her.
