Spider-Man (1994 TV series)

Oh that's RIGHT THEY HAD A PUNISHER THAT NEVER USED GUNS lol.

Man shit now I wanna re-watch kinda just as a comedy kinda thing.

Some cartoons in the 90's still had that "no gun rule" despite it having been broken years later by things like BTAS, so it's not surprsing. Ironically Disney was among the few western only animation studio that didn't seem to have a no guns / don't say death policy or at least one consistently. Shows like Darkwing Duck and Gargoyles (mostly in its first season), had real guns aplenty.

My favorite piece of Spider-Man media.

I really loved Kingpin as the central villain. I also loved Smythe's protrayal and the relationship between the two.

Kingpin throwing a desk is forever etched in my memory. Wish I could just throw a desk like he did.

And you're right, the portrayal of Smyth was very interesting in retrospect.

Kingpin and Smythe's friendship (relationship?) Was awesome. One of the reasons why I loved the whole Kingpin and Wesley friendship on Daredevil, which, though I could be wrong, felt like it was somewhat inspired by it?

He used Laser Guns

And Blade showed up too

That show was dumb

Shit ended with a mean ass cliffhanger too. Just like the MOTHERFUCKING SILVER SURFER CARTOON

The cameos were on point. I remember when The Punisher showed up as well.

It was definitely inspired by it. At first, I thought Wesley was Smythe. His name didn't sound familiar to me, so I had to take a trip down memory lane.

I remember watching this, X-Men (also Evolution), The Incredible Hulk and Fantastic Four here in the UK but never Iron Man or Silver Surfer. Watched the former on Turkish Fox Kids when I was on holiday there and didn't know the latter even had a show until a few years ago.

Then, around 10 years ago, I found out Spider-Man Unlimited was a thing when I was watching Turkish Jetix (I've been there a lot). That was a weird show.

I'm not sure what I expected coming into this thread, but a pic from Kung Fu: The Legend Continues of all things wasn't it.

To be honest I likes it as a kid but even then notice it's cheapness. Looking at it now.. it's actually a pretty terrible show.

Lot of people make fun of it because of the Shocker scene but I loved it. It made me fall in love with the character (before that, I only had the SEGA games for context)

The 1977 television series made me fall in love with the character, though I don't remember much from it. When the game came out, I was ecstatic. It was hard, but I eventually beat it with my twin brother. When the show came out, I became a Spider-Man addict. Unfortunately, I have yet to read any of the comics. Actually, I take that lie back. I've read some from the one where he's a tycoon.

GOAT Marvel cartoon for me. I used to have all VHS that came alongside a collection with the first stories made by Ditko and Stan Lee

Good storytelling. Awful animation.

The ending is actually quite fantastic.

Not even this... I mean there are solid memorable moments, but they constantly pause the show to play overlong series of flashbacks, Mary Jane is written and performed precisely how one would think a 90's cartoon would write a 'girlfriend' character, there are overlong arcs that are utterly boring...

I don't want to suggest there isn't good. There is. For a cartoon from that era, there was some solid stuff once in a while. But by any other standard, there's also a whole lot of bad.

90s Spiderman was something special- I am still waiting for Madam Webb's return.

And the episode with Tiana - when he reveals his identity to her and they go web-slinging through the city - the feels.
John Semper the lead creator on the show wrote something called "Peter finds Mary-Jane" and got some of the VAs to act out their parts in a promo. Even Madam Webb!

He had the whole cast do a series of promos for a [failed?] kickstarter for a new cartoon pilot. They're pretty great if you love the Spidey TAS cast.

My favorite cartoon of all time. The voices were perfect, the stories/arcs were good (season 5 was kind of weird but good) and the music which was recently released on SoundCloud (parts of it).

If only I backed war of the rocketmen with John Semper Jr so I could see what happened after season 5!

It's not a great show especially upon rewatching it, but I appreciate how crazy they went with cameos and storylines. As a kid Spider-Man was my introduction to a much bigger world that I still enjoy today. Blade was awesome.

MTV Series>>>>>>>>Fox Kids

Smallville had the same thing

And they tired to make Morbius safer, they actually made him creepier

The thing I loved about this show was that Spider-Man in motion looked great but the normal characters walking around looked like shit.

Do you have a link to that Spider-Man music thing on Spotify? Just interested.

Loved it and the X-Men series as a kid. It got me into comics. Always wanted to watch the Spectacular Spider-Man series but the art style used to out me off. The few clips I've seen on YouTube make it look really good though.

God, what did they do with Daredevil...

He's fine? They went through his origin story and everything during his episodes. I actually really liked when Blade, Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine and the X-Men showed up. The Blade episodes in particular were really bad ass.

I particularly liked that this series had continuation whenever a recurring character or storyline came up.

But it directly transitioned into Spiderman Unlimited, aka the most underrated Spiderman =(

I still remember how at some point Spiderman became a giant spider while fighting against a vampire and how the punisher, kraven and the mother****** Blade showed up at the same time.

Maaaan I wish we have this kind of crazyness in nowadays movies.

The pilot was an event for me. It was the episode with the Lizard I think. They talked about it on the 8pm news on the first channel and it was on at 9pm, I recorded it on vhs. I liked that pilot, the rest of that series... Eh. I fell off pretty quickly, even at the time, I could tell it was pretty bad. X-Men was better. And the DC cartoons were miles ahead.

Loved it. Those years were my introduction to X-Men and Spiderman. I was like, 9-10 years old. Younger for X-Men, but it was great.

I loved the series but in that era it was the combination of the Marvel cartoons, the action figures, the packs of trading cards, and the video games that made it all come together. Your imagination just took off.

I loved this series. I used to own a few cels from the cartoon which I taped on my walls.

The story arcs were great. It's a shame the animation looked like it was drawn at 3fps and the violence censorship was extreme, and it ended on a cliffhanger. :(

I loved the show and the X-Men show as well. Sure, they did things that I think are weird now like the lasers instead of guns and roundabout ways of saying killed, but dammit it was still a good time. Plus, X-men would still manage to be pretty heavy sometimes though and serialized arcs > standalone stuff any day

Yeah, I loved watching it as a kid.

Tried rewatching a few years ago and it really didn't hold up.

For me it's the opposite. I re-watched it like ~ a year ago and couldn't believe it still holds up. I have to say though that I didn't watch it in english but in german though, which changes a bit the tone from the tidbits I saw imao (so there isn't a scene like this).

To me this series had the perfect tone (balance of quipping and being serious) for Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

After having read a good chunk of the comics (616), I'm surprised how the story went especially the end with the clones and MJ.

It was a great show for its time if you were young and starved for good Marvel cartoons. I loved it as a kid for its serialized stories, but man, oh man, has it not aged well. I still don't know if it or the original X-Men cartoon hold up better, but both suffer due to age. X-Men at least felt more consistent in its first few seasons, and it raised the bar for what cartoons could do with serialized stories, even if the execution wasn't perfect.

Spectacular Spider-Man may have dialed back on all of the villains and made the designs more stylized, but it's definitely the better cartoon. Such a shame it was canceled.

In a perfect world where audiences and kids are more open to cartoons with long-term storytelling, we'd have great new Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons. But Marvel's animated series have been absolute trash since being bought by Disney.

Spider-Man was one of the best 90s cartoons. The animation hasn't aged well and, yes, Batman: TAS was obviously the better show.

But it Spider-Man was great. It respected the source material and wasn't afraid of scaring kids away by being heavily serialized.

And while it's easy to make fun of the show for some of its issues, such its censorship of Punisher and Morbius or not being able to show actual violence against characters. But I think it should be commended for managing to work its way around those limitations.

It also got me into comics. I loved it so much as a kid that my dad stopped by a comic shop and got me my first ever comic:

Loved it as a kid but I doubt it holds up.

The way they handled Morbius was a weird. By trying to censor around the whole vampire thing they actually made him more grotesque. Sucking plasma through tiny mouths in his hands? Jesus Fuck that's horrifying.

I liked it when I watched it on YouTube as a 7 year old. Same with X-Men and hell even X-Men Evolution.

Shit ain't good. That BtAS tho. The DCAU was flawless

Oh god, I feel so old all of a sudden.
