Spider-Man: Homecoming |OT| MCU's Sweet 16 - SPOILERS

Not sure about the rest of you guys but I thought it was particularly refreshing that third act didn't revolve around a "THE VILLAIN IS THREATENING TO DESTROY THE WORLD" cliche and that it was smaller, more intimate clashing of ideals between Spider-Man and Vulture.

Very, I hope the sequels can manage this as infinity war 1 and 2 will be enough of the large scale stuff.

Yup. Really, I hope both Marvel and DC learn from this. Save the "end of the world scenarios" for the Avengers and Justice League films. Solo films should generally be focused on more personal conflicts for the characters, imo.

One way they could have had Peter make his own suit is if he had used a special version of his web fluid that wouldn't dissolve in combination with a 3D printer at his school. Basically Big Hero 6 that shit :-P

To be fair, I don't think there's anything wrong with Thor, Doctor Strange, Captain America etc having to save the damn world in their movies, they're always dealing with huge shit. Absolutely makes sense to scale down for characters like Ant-Man and Spidey though and I'm glad they recognized that.

Yeah, agreed to leave that scale for the big team ups.

It's a big reason why I love Civil War so much. Yeah, all the characters were under the impression that a squad of Winter Soldier level assassins were about to be woken up and threaten the world but they got played by Zemo. Everything that happened they did to each other really.

man Civil War was so good. I just re-watched that over the weekend and I forgot how good it was despite it being one of my favorite MCU movies.

This was one of the big reasons I enjoyed Ant-Man.

i keep seeing people say that, but I didnt like her. Probably because she was just put in for one liners and to be a weird nerdy loner person, but she just turned me off. Hope she gets more screen time to actually have some sort of real character in the next film.

During the ferry scene, Peter did sound like a genuine teen arguing when he knows he's kinda in the wrong but he doesn't wanna admit it

Like I've had those moments a lot

My thoughts exactly. I loved everything about this movie, especially Holland as a true young boy Spider-Man learning the ropes, but she was annoying. I really hope they'll flesh her out more in the upcoming movies.

Lol you ain't hesitate at all to snatch that up

While I enjoyed her brief moments I agree she's not really a character in this.

I think that's fine. The school kids couldn't have possibly been fleshed out enough with all this movie had to do and set up, we're lucky Ned got so much screen time. But I think establishing her personality so strongly and hinting towards her true feelings towards Peter goes a long way for making her a more developed part of the sequel.

she stole the show for me, loved every moment with her and her growth as a character

got the feels when she screams for spider man to help her friends after previously saying she didn't have any

Yeah like - I'm not really endeared to her as yet because the focus wasn't on her but she did have some minor character moments. She was definitely an active participant in the school life part of Peter's story. And I don't buy her excuse for a second - she showed up to detention purely because Peter was there.

Her middle finger moment got the biggest laugh out of me compared to anything Ned did or said lol

The more I think about it, the more I feel the knowledge that she's MJ (or rumored to be MJ) prior to going into the movie set up unreasonable expectations for her character. She's barely in the movie and played more as a gag, and there would be nothing wrong with that if she was some random high school loner. Those characters are a dime a dozen in high school comedies and they work just fine. Knowing she was supposed to be a "big" character kept me waiting for her have a bigger role when that's not really fair to the character they were making. Imagine if you had known nothing about her or the controversy of her casting prior to going into the movie and suddenly at the end, she reveals she goes by MJ. That was supposed to be a twist! But the internet speculation machine kinda ruined it before we got to that point.

Dude I love the movie but you are really reaching saying she grows as a character. She just doesn't have enough to do to be a character. She's a background piece that occasionally interacts with the main movie but it's clear that they are just setting her up for a real role in a sequel.

I think the middle finger was perhaps the funniest thing she said/did other than maybe the slave line. The other stuff was some standard snark and what not, but that middle finger was so damn random lmao

Mostly agree. Thought it was strange how she's not much of a character and doesn't have a lot of screen time for all the promotion the actresses did. Obviously she'll have a larger role in the sequel(s).

Almost every nerdy loner chick I knew in high school grew up to be a bad bitch.

If Pete's really smart, he'll jump on that right now.

I agree. You could literally cut out every line of the movie Michelle has and the movie wouldn't change at all.

She was Daria Morgendorffer without anything interesting or witty to say. 90% of her part in the movie is just talking about how she doesn't want to be where ever she is. Obviously (Or at least hopefully) that will change if she gets a larger role in the sequel, but she was by far the worst part of this movie.

I found most of the teen stuff annoying, but really liked the Spider Man parts. Genki/Ned was incredibly grating to me, as was Flash. I didn't mind MJ, but I felt like they just used her name and then made a brand new character for her. Liz felt more like the true MJ character.

reaching how? she starts the movie as a side loner who doesn't have any friends and slowly becomes more fond of the people that she's around and eventually considers them friends. that's growth. she started somewhere and grew to somewhere else. she calls out for spider man to help her friends in the washington monument which is the first moment where she considers them that, she feels for peter when he's all sad in detention, you can tell her flipping off peter at the dance wasn't done in a mean way but in a friendly joking way, and at the end of the movie she tells those people that they are her friends. growth.

Let me rephrase it this way. She had so little screentime that I barely knew what kind of person she was, and making snarky remarks or gestures the moment she was there for a few second didnt help me not hate her. It didn't click with me.

I can understand they are probably setting her up for a bigger role, but it would have been better if they just went with the route of; Quiz students being present at the table, teacher welcoming a new face and you just watch Holland his expression of falling in love.

They didn't even need to show her face.

Intertextuality is bad now? I even made that statement as a illuminating point. Even if you actually, ya know, watch the movies you would see the obvious changes in Mary-Jane. The Importance of Being Earnest just makes the movie richer and more on point with the message it's conveying.

I'll quote myself, as I've already addressed this:

I'm not saying it's bad at all. I'm saying if an audience can get this, then surely they can remember Spidey's origin and not need to explicitly see it again.

Slowly? There's like a span of three weeks, four tops.

Liz at least has motivations and plot points. Plus her tie to Vulture is key to the story.

I can't remember a single scene where Michelle did something worthwhile. And all of her dialogue was generic snarky high school girl lines.

And she was the worst because otherwise I think it was a pretty fantastic movie. My only real complaints were her, new Flash, and I felt that the movie dragged a bit in the middle.

But overall, yeah, I think a character that could be completely cut out of the movie without anything around her changing is by far the worst part.

Everything you've listed is extremely superficial, I wouldn't call it character growth.

Character growth is someone CHANGING as a person over the course of a film. How is who she is at the end different from who she is at the beginning, aside from now she has some new friends? No one can answer that because we literally don't know a single thing about her other than that she likes to joke around.

Really the only change I saw from her was she suddenly became more outgoing at the very end of the movie... you know, as soon as the hot girl on the team is out of the way.

so how is she different aside from the aspect I'm bringing up where she's different? ;p

it's a high school movie, starting out as a loner who doesn't have any friends and then making friends is growth

you can see a difference in how she treats peter especially at the end where she tries to front like she's not concerned with where he's going

Getting friends doesn't mean you personally grew.

Also, she didn't really get friends so much as she announced that she had friends to the debate team she was already hanging out with the entire movie. I guess maybe you could argue that that tiny little window of non snark is character progression, but it's so little that I think other people find it hard to consider it any actual growth.

Yeah I did'nt like that. Reminded me too much of the idea that you can't have two female characters existing and being different. Instead Liz Leaves and MJ gets moved up and more outgoing because???

TBh I felt bad for Liz. She gets stood up several times and her dad goes to prison for being a super villain. Peter ruining other peoples lives already!

I still feel like a big scene with MJ was missing from the movie, most likely after he loses the suit. I was expecting her to be the one person to get through his cloud of depression but that scene never happened with anyone. It would have done a lot to round out her character though, and better establish her arc from loner to teammate.

I'm talking more performance-wise, Liz served her purpose of course, but eh, it was very lacking for me whenever she was on-screen.
