Spielberg says "no more" digital corrections to his films

To be fair to Lucas, changing the Emperor in ESB was completely necessary and a welcomed change.

A lot of the other stuff is more questionable.

You're right in that the original ESB emperor looked like shit.

But the new one looks worse.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

I got an invite to a 35mm Q+A screening of JAWS with Spielberg that I can't attend because its in LA. :(

Dude, drop what you're doing and go. I'd never pass that up.

There's a certain grittiness in older movies, the imperfections add something to it. A movie like Star Wars (new trilogy) is entirely too sterile. This obviously isn't just because of digital touch ups, but some newer movies are just too clean. That being said there is a place for this, such as touching up effects, not overdoing it or letting it dominate the scene, instead fix it up.

Also, George Lucas is a fuck.

Ehh I feel a little bad for Lucas... probably gonna catch a lot of hate for that. He clearly has lost his passion for movies in general, that being said he did have something at one point in time, and I just can't chalk it up as an accident. That being said I didn't mean to compare him to Spielberg, Spielberg is in the absolute top tier of directors IMO.

Seriously though ... he just doesn't get it. People are fine with correcting shit like removing wires and booms, and even sometimes in fixing up effects that looks particularly shitty (I'd love Predator to fix the lasers, etc).

What people don't want is the shit he pulled in ET (gun/walkie-talkie swap) and the sorts of shit Lucas pulled like Han not shooting first.
This, basically. Wires are fine, but retcons are not.

I think an E.T appreciation thread is in order.

I'd agree with this.

I just watched E.T. about a month ago, the previous time being when I was a kid some 20 years ago, and holy shit is that an amazing movie. I really wasn't able to appreciate the film making and storytelling when I was so young.

Yeah I appreciate what Abrams is trying to do but I don't think he'll come close to ET with Super 8.

Oh and I didn't look at the date on this thread so I got mad excited for muthafucking Jaws bluray, I hope it comes soon.

Imperfections in older movies do give them some character that I generally like. I was a little disappointed when I recently re-watched A New Hope (big surprise) and found they'd corrected the sounds for the blaster in the Death Star when they're at the bridge (usually the sound changed when Leah started firing). Quirks like that didn't ultimately bother me, and made me smile a bit. Once it was perfect, it made it a bit more boring.

I think digital corrections can be great. As long as these "corrections" don't got to fucking Lucas levels of ridiculousness. A great example would be Blade Runner.

He's not the only one doing it:

Face palm. A director that has delivered so many great experiences and is more talented then all us armchair critics is now a scum bag? This is the absolute black pit of this era of CG realism obsession, technology and internet. As great as net is we clearly lost something when I long for pre days at times.

I didn't mean to insult him. I'm just saying that anyone can say something, and continue to do another.

That shot is fine.

The Gallimimus are definitely dated though. The scene of the T-Rex eating the Gallis looks downright terrible now
I realize this is an ancient post, but this shot really isn't fine, especially when Grant starts pointing at clearly green-screened dinosaur. The textures on the brachiosaurus resemble a 1st gen Xbox 360 game. They look really artificial. Grant also doesn't blend in with the background at all. It feels very staged.

It's become a cliche to say that JP looks better than most CG today. While true in some cases, a lot of the movie looks very dated.

I dunno

I guess the Blu-Ray (rumoured this fall) will tell a better story of just how outdated it is

it's true. it does not look real anymore. that's okay though. J.PARK gets just about everything else right: it has fun characters, quotable lines, memorable set-pieces, and MOST of the effects in the movie look good by virtue of the fact that they are a combination of practical and c.g., and not just the latter. i will concede that from a purely visual standpoint, there are moments that have not held up; the movie on the whole, however, is a certifiable classic, and wrecks most visual powerhouses today by virtue of the fact that it gets all the really important things right where others fail. it creates a consistent world that feels magical and wondrous, eighteen years after release. this is by no means unheard of in cinema, but it's certainly not every movie that accomplishes that staying power.

yup, it's still an excellent movie. and the animatronic stuff is still spectacular.

Did he do something with Indy?
I think there was some clean-up stuff, like removing the reflection from a sheet of glass between Indy and the rattlesnake in the chamber of the Lost Ark.

What happened with ET? Havent seen the flick in probably 20 years.
They added a CG version of ET, replaced the FBI's guns with walkie talkies, Elliot's brother wants to go as a terrorist but they redub it as "hippie".
