Spin-offs that are better than their mainline counterpart?

Here's one that kind of counts: Tactics Ogre

Also, I really liked Digital Devil Saga. Got totally sucked into that game.
But better than mainline SMT? hmmm... not sure. I loved the art, world design, and music in the game though.

I'd probably disagree...tactics was good, but the original release was kind of a mess. Better than the majority of FF? sure. But not all of it.

Vagrant story is an fft spin off though, and id place that game over tactics any day of the week

Matsuno is on record saying that Vagrant Story doesn't take place in the same world as FFT.

Vagrant Story is set in Valendia. One of the continents in FFXII is called Valentia. But I believe it was translated in English as Valendia as well, probably to attempt to deliberately link it. There are also many references to similar religions and lore between FFT, Vagrant Story, and FFXII. But a lot of it is just the flavor Matsuno himself likes to use, and was not meant to deliberately suggest that the worlds are the same.

Isn't DK: Jungle Beat a spin-off of its own? It's not like normal DK games where DK is usually the bad guy.

Also, Mega Man X series is a spin-off. Original Mega Man series is MM 1 - 10, X series is MMX 1-9.

There were silly rumors a long time ago that Mega Man X was Mega Man 10 (and "Mega Man and Bass" was Mega Man 9), but thankfully Capcom put that to rest by releasing actual Mega Man 9 and 10 games.

In my eyes, I like more the Persona brand than the mainline SMT games, but simply because they fit more to my taste. However, that's not to say that I don't like the Main MegaTen brand (I can assure you that I will be the first in line to buy SMT IV where I live whenever it gets released in the west).

Objetively in the case of those two, though, can't say. Both are awesome. Can we leave it at that? :D

A more clear example in-line with the topic would be Final Fantasy Tactics. Loved that game to death, can't say the same about any mainline FF title that I have played

Mega Man Legends > Mega Man

I was about to say something similar.
I've played through SMT1, Nocturne, DDS, P3, P4, and Strange Journey and loved them all. My favorite is Persona 4, with SJ in second.

Mega Man X
and In a few months I should be able to add Metal Gear Rising Revengeance :P
 
Im not sure an rpg tactics game vs a traditional rpg is an appropriate comparison...

Its fine to like one more than the other, but saying one is better than the other is silly.

Its like saying Halo Wars is better than Halo or vice versa.
If you like RTS's more than FPS's then that would influence your desicion wouldnt it? And how could you say its not going to? :P

And dont be cute and say "i like traditional rpgs better than tactics rpgs but i still like tactics better still"
