Spirits, Wines and Beers Recomendations

I've been wondering - are there any light beers out there that aren't terrible? I mean, they're obviously not going to be as good as "real" beer, but I can't even start drinking Coors, Bud, or Miller lites until after I'm already drunk and I'm too scared of wasting my money to try anything else. I think I remember Corona Light being half decent, but I haven't had it in a while.

Difficulty - must be available in Texas. This is really more just curiosity on my part than a plan to switch to light beer, though.

Sam Adams Light is good. Has much more flavor than Coors/Bud/Miller Lite.

Honestly I am not a light fan, but Amstel Light is pretty good and should be available:

Also as odd as it sounds on a hot day Bud Light Lime is pretty refreshing.

what's there to hate...if you don't wanna get educated about the good stuff, not exactly my problem.

in american beer culture IPAs became popular because it's seen as a more macho type of beer. "hey its bitter, so its gotta be better, right? its manly and shit!" or people who drink IPAs all of a sudden think they have a more discerning palate, so others follow along. when in truth...IPAs just taste bad. bad fucking beer is what it is.
Jesus, all those limes got you sour, or something?

I always go with Yuengling Light. Not sure about the availability.

NM.... Sucks to be you

Delicious. It's 12%, so it gets you pretty drunk, but still tastes great. It's hard to find though, there's only one store in my area that sells it, and it's like 20 minutes away.

BigAssBock-1.jpg

I think it's local to the Sonoma County (CA) area, because I've never seen it anywhere else. One of my favorite beers, I always make sure to pick up a few when I visit home.

Great for people who are not normally beer drinkers. It's very fruity, so drinking too much can give you a little stomach ache but it's still delicious and pretty different from any other beer I've had before.

this is the dumbest thing anyone has ever posted on any messageboard, ever

Some other reccomendations:

apricot-wheat-beer-2.jpg

Another fruty beer, only this one doesn't have that syrup taste to it. It actually doesn't taste like beer at all, it's strange.

Golden Monkey by Victory Brewing Company. Very good, 9.5% APV, but hard to find.
Click on the picture for some review I found while trying to get a picture. He calls it the Nectar of the Gods.

DosXXa_glass.jpg

Dos Equis Amber. It's my go-to beer since it's normally pretty cheap, it's easy to find, and it tastes great.

karlstraussamberlager.jpg

Amber Lager by Karl Strauss Brewing Company.
Tried this out recently and I really liked it. It doesn't look like much, but I suggest giving it a try. I mean, it is Karls favorite beer. It says so right on the bottle.

I am going to have to look into Victory...any beer named Golden Monkey has my name on it :D

The online store seems to have most of their products including the Golden Monkey.

Seeing this bumped, I thought I'd recommend my favourite "get drunk fast" shot:

Dissolve about 50grams of Fisherman's Friends in 0,5l of any voda (40% or so). It takes some time for the pills to dissolve so I'd recommend you making it the day before drinking.

What are Fisherman's Friends?

What makes this different than a shot of any 80-proof alcohol?

I feel this way sometimes too. I think a lot of people just like pushing their taste buds into overdrive with hoppiness. Also a lot of people get super hoppy IPAs because they see they have a higher alcohol content and they figure they will get drunk faster. Inevitably some of these people adjust in their tastes eventually and find them to be good. All beer and alcohol take time to get used to. If it didn't have the positive reinforcement that alcohol has with its effects I doubt anyone would get past those first few tastes of it.

Some people like hops. I don't know why it has to be justified to anyone, or why people need to marginalize it into some kind of macho dick measuring. Plenty of people simply enjoy it.

Also I don't think an IPA would be anywhere near my first choice if I was looking for high ABV. If the alcohol were the draw there's plenty of beer that doesn't taste like IPA's and have a lot more alcohol, so "suffering" through the taste to get drunk is a pretty terrible way to do it.

I need to correct myself. I was referring to Pete's Wicked Strawberry Blonde, not the Ale.

My bad.

So i got back from the Total Wine store over lunch and was happy to find that they carry the victory beers. I went with golden monkey on your advice and I picked up a 'Wild Devil' which does not seem to be on their site...

I also picked up a Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar:

So the weekend will be kicked off right :D

If I want to get hammered with beer the first place I look probably isn't an IPA, it would be a good Stout, or Belgian Tripel/Quad. IPAs can burn out your taste buds quick so they aren't something I would have more than a pint or two of.

So I finally got around to trying a few more of Victory Brewings beers.

First off Twelve is incredible...this beer has it all, taste, drink ability and 12% alcohol...awesome!

I also had Storm King...this beer is also delicious...a dark and rich stout...and 9% alcohol.

I have to say that while Stone Brewing is my favorite Victory is a close second. Stone is releasing their 13th anniversary beer this week...cant wait to give it a try:
http://www.stonebrew.com/13th/ale/

Also if you live in the San Diego area...August 22nd this looks to be killer:

(Both Stone and victory in one event...:D )

Anyone into beer cocktails? Ever tried a Dark Moon?

760bff9f5731b165_m.jpg

I only drink Guinness with Blue Moon. As far as beer goes; I like Blue Moon, Sam Adams Summer Ale, Corona Extra and Coors Light.

For spirits, Capt. Morgan and Yager (unfortunately).

EDIT- I almost forgot yuengling lager and I just tried Keiths a few days ago and liked it quite a bit.

Never had that exact mix, but an Irish bar near me (Rosie Connelys) always makes their black and tans with Smithwick's and Guiness (note i totally could be wrong on this...but they always mix two).

Only beer cocktail that I know outside of Black & Tans is the Dark & Stormy. Been meaning to try it myself. It consists of Ginger Beer and Gosling's Black Rum poured on the rocks.

Never heard of Irish Car Bombs or Flaming Dr. Peppers?
Irish Car Bomb
3/4 pint Guinness stout
1/2 shot Bailey's Irish cream
1/2 shot Jameson Irish whiskey

Add the Bailey's and Jameson to a shot glass, layering the Bailey's on the bottom. Pour the Guinness into a pint glass or beer mug 3/4 of the way full and let settle. Drop the shot glass into the Guinness and chug. If you don't drink it fast enough it will curdle and increasingly taste worse.

Flaming Dr. Pepper
3/4 shot amaretto almond liqueur
1/4 oz 151 proof rum
1/2 glass beer

1. Fill a shot glass about 3/4 full with amaretto and top it off with enough 151 proof rum to be able to burn.

2. Place the shot glass in another glass and fill the outer glass with beer (right up to the level of the shot glass).

3. Ignite the amaretto/151 and let it burn for a while. Blow it out (or leave it burning if you're brave - not recommended) and slam it. Tastes just like Dr. Pepper.

IMO, if you're shooting/chugging it, it ain't a "cocktail". :lol

I've done my share of car bombs. Flaming dr. pepper I've not heard of, however.
Yeah these would be more of beer related shots ;)

The Flaming Dr Pepper is great and does actually taste like the namesake.

What's sad is that I love Irish Car Bombs, and though I don't drink them that often, I had absolutely no idea there was any whiskey in them.

Not that I'm surprised. I'm just an idiot, is all.

I've been drinking a lot of Natty Boh lately.

That's a lie, actually. It says it's brewed in Baltimore, but that's no longer true. It's brewed in Milwaukee. I believe that the beer's only sold in the Milwaukee and Baltimore areas, though.

Oh, and the beer isn't good, you know, in the classical sense. It's along the lines of Natural Ice, that sort of thing. Slightly better, but I'm biased. $6 for a 12 pack.

Also, I've been drinking rum and cokes. Well, Don Q cristal and Coke Zero, three or four ice cubes and the juice from 1/4 lime. Delicious.

Campari is my preferred spirit. Mix a can of Orange Juice concentrate with some seltzer water and add equal parts Campari. Throw in a few ice cubes...and BAM, you are all set.

Or you could drink it straight like Steve Zissou.

For beer there is only 2 choices. Hofbrauhaus Weizin or Keystone Light.

For fun? Olde English 800

Yeah what can I say, there's that certain romanticism about "the pour", even if it's something simple. Dunking a shotglass full of stuff into a beer pint and shoving it down your gullet as fast as possible...it lacks a certain uh...charm. :lol

I'll keep an eye out for the Dr. Pepper, thanks for the rec. It sounds interesting.

I recommend the cheapest stuff you can get. That way, you can get more.

Nein! I know you're being sarcastic and all, but I'm a big advocate of the "drink less, drink better" philosophy.

This is 100% correct. There is a time and place for the cheap stuff (college) but if I want a drink I would much rather enjoy what I am drinking then drinking a shit ton to get drunk.

Coopers Pale is my go to beer, so good. I pity the rest of the world that doesn't get his beer, one of the benefits of Australia... Coopers Sparkling not so often, but love it when I do, more brutal. Sparkling is way better on tap as the sediment stays away from the mouth.

schofferhofer_hefeweizen_l.jpg

Schofferhofer Hefeweizen when I have $25 for a 6 pack to splurge...

As for spirits, Bacardi 8 on ice is phenomenal, like a sweet whiskey

Or just Johnny Walker Black on ice, or JW Blue neat if someone else is shouting...

Four or five quid a bottle. Pillars of Hercules, London. Only time I've drunk it. Had a good time.

Resulting impressions: Kopparbergs is an expensive and nice drink.

I know it's an old post, but what?! In Sweden a 50cl can of Kopparbergs is about ÂŁ1 (13.90:- = ÂŁ1.088) and one of the cheapest alcoholic beverages you can find. To me it's still pretty much an alcoholic soda for girls.

I see that some have already recommended Delirium Tremens, and I can only agree. Maybe the best beer I've ever had.

God yes! I just can never decide between the 4-pack 8 ounce bottles or a couple of the 22s :D

Bacardi 8 is a great rum :)

Delirium Tremens is brilliant, though I hate Nocturnum, for some reason.

Just say no to Bacardi! If you want real well aged rum, start with the Cruzan Single Barrel Estate.

Good rum is hard to find in Australia, a land that swills Bundaberg...

I tried Innis & Gunn on the weekend. It can be hard to find, but this stuff is awesome. They age the beer in oak barrels...holy fuck does it go down smooth.

Looks like I have to represent New England GAF.

Magic Hat #9 (Not quite pale ale)

Easy to drink, with a nice crisp finish and a slight apricot taste.

Harpoon UFO

3348443393_b9fb9be183.jpg

My favorite Hefeweizen. Very tasty and refreshing, but not overpowered sweetness like some other Hefs. Harpoon also makes UFO white (which is very similar to blue moon, but also slightly stronger and more flavorful) and UFO raspberry.

I also have to concur with earlier posts, this stuff is pretty amazing:
