Splatoon developer explains reason for lack of voice chat and more

Being disappointed is one thing, but I don't think you can be justifiably angry about the voice chat decision. Splatoon is a new franchise, so the developers don't have a duty to deliver on promises set up by previous games. They don't owe anyone to make it a certain way because they're the ones that decide what Splatoon is and is not.

I don't think this guy is lying about the reason. I think they decided early on that there wouldn't be voice chat. Otherwise, I don't see why they would be so adamant about it never being a possibility. In that respect, you kind of have to respect that decision. To not do that is to say that every game has to have voice chat unilaterally, that a game can't be designed around not having voice chat.

Granted you don't have to like the result, but if not having voice chat is part of what Splatoon is, you don't really have any leverage in saying that it should be. Nintendo is allowed to try making an online shooter without voice chat.

Edit: Uh oh, I ended up on a new page.

Does the Wii U not have a party chat feature? If I'm playing Splatoon with a friend who lives across the country there is literally no way to talk to them through the Wii U?

And? It's an E10+ game with voice chat. In your post you asked why people thought voice chat would be added to a Nintendo E10+ game and i cited an example of another Nintendo made game that's E10+ and has voice chat.

I ask because, people keeps talking about how "other modern shooters" have this feature, but how many of those are rated E10+? And the reality is that SSB's voice chat is pretty much useless all things considered(where as in this kind of game could be more useful).

It depends on the game, not many have it.

Ah I got ya. I got mixed up with the semantics of your original post. You have a point, I can't think of any of the same genre that has voice chat and is E10+ (or less). That being said I also can't think of any other games in the genre that feature squid people and shooting ink/paint/whatever at each other.

So I'd like to think this is a bit of a unique case where you probably could get away with having voice chat (keeping it exclusive to friends of course) and keeping the rating intact

It's right there in the OP that Amano wanted to make a shooter people like his friends could play without frustration, and I doubt his friends are 10.

Good point.

This is a good point as well. Maybe Splatoon plays great without voice chat, to the point where there's no real tactical advantage if voice chat was even an option.

I always found it amusing that for all their deficiencies and mistakes, Gamefreak is the one Nintendo affiliated studio that actually gets online. Pokemon had voice chat in Diamond and Pearl, and the online functions continue to improve with each iteration. Now if only some of Nintendo's developers could get some advice from them.

That Voice Chat comment is going to get them raked over the coals, especially when muting would suffice.

I'm still more than excited for the game but I can already think of a few people this will be a deal breaker for offline.

Thanks for posting.

It's really "to protect the kids" but other than that, nice information.

Except even most M rated games don't have public chat anymore. Partly because of abuse over the years and also because it gets you a ton of bandwidth back that your game can use.

I'm honestly surprised developers continue to ship even friends-chat in recent games, 99% of people are in the system-level Party Chats these days.

It depends on the game, not many have it.

So it's a per game basis and with Splatoon theres 0 voice chat? I'd have to use Skype or something? Thats insane. That's not how competitive multiplayer shooters work. I wouldn't have spent half as much time with TLoU's multiplayer if it wasn't for meeting up with friends and gaffers in a PS4 party and playing together.

I don't care for voice chat in games and I doubt it would even be needed for Splatoon so this doesn't bother me personally.

I honestly think voice chat in Pokemon was a waste of their time.

So the guy got bad experiences online therefore he'll put any online interactions away. What a jerk, can't believe that kind of close-mind still exist.

Decisive point will stand for the online infrastructure, if no game lobbys with real matchmaking (unlike MK8, SSB4) and stable server i'll forget this game in a nanosecond.

I guess that's where all the missing frames went...

Exactly, but like i said how many multiplayer shooters are not rated T or M?

You mean like Smash Bros which is E10+ and allows (limited) voice chat?

It's been clarified already.

Demons Souls didnt have it. And yes it's a multiplayer game if you want it to be. And yes theres times when you would like to say something like "youre not making it because you're fatrolling" or any number of thing that cant be cinveyed with a gesture. But the game gains something from it, too. It keeps other players from spoiling your mood. Its makes them into mysterious entities. Its a bold move and not entirely without merit.

Why not just have mute by default with no way of knowing if anyone is chatting then having the option to opt in to see sound icon when someone is chatting andunmute players/party?

It's not rocket science.

Demons is a horrible example. The whole point of the game was random encounters by friend or for going through the same struggle as you. Co op was meant to be separated as 2 or more people going through an adventure with minimal help.

Splatoon is an arena team based shooter with heavy emphasis on teamwork to succeed.

Demon's Souls ins't a competitive multiplayer team based shooter.

Exactly, but like i said how many multiplayer shooters are not rated T or M?.

Sure, leave out general voice chat, I've never gained anything from it myself, but then work on including invitation based party voice chat on either the OS level or specifically within the game.

Might as well be fighting bots. Nintendo really needs to give its head a shake and get with the times. If someone has their feelings hurt online, they can make use of that nifty little function called 'mute'

I think the internet has given people this false sense of empowerment where they think that they actually matter. Here Nintendo makes this beautiful, fun, and fresh game and all people can complain about is chat.

How about about fuck what you expect, and accept what your given. It's about compromise people.

Just give the damn game a chance.

This thread is a goldmine, lol.

No voice chat in 2015 is something only Nintendo would do because they don't understand online. Fucking mute or just restrict it to friend chat.

Oh well, none of my friends have a Wii U and actively play anyways so I'll be flying solo in silence online!

It's been clarified already.

No, all you've done is move goalposts

Not sure why people were expecting voice chat in a Nintendo E10+ game beyond friends even. People keeps comparing this with other games of the same genre, but those are either T or M.

I mean Smash Bros on the Wii U is E10+ and that had voice chat I believe (granted I think Smash Bros could have definitely gotten away with not having it tbh).

But Super Smash Bros. it isn't a team shooter.

How about you try sticking to one argument.

Last voice chat session I had with friends was 4 years ago, with Uncharted 2. Because all my friends had a PS3 and this gem of a game.

Sadly I expect a facetime session will suffice for Splatoon.

Run by old men, plus don't want to pay for comprehensives online services.

Yeah Demon's Souls and Splatoon are clearly going for the same vibe.

I approve. A single session of CoD was enough for me to stay away from any online multiplayer where you can hear others.
That's like saying a single session of Ice Climber is enough for you to stay away from Nintendo games.

"Squid of the mind, key to life's paintbrush... Squid of the lost, withdrawn from its Splatoon... May chat be granted so the Wii U might be mended... So the Wii U might be mended."

I wouldn't use public chat, and the only people I'd want to chat with I'd prefer to call over the phone anyway, but with that said...

Mute everyone by default, only provide option to un-mute if you're friends with a player.

Problem solved. I don't know why Nintendo chooses to make people who want a regular modern online gaming experience have to jump through hoops like we're playing games in early 2000.

Speaking from experience with years and years of Team Fortress 2 play I would always mute the in-game voice and just talk with my friends on Skype or on Mumble if I was doing big comp matches. Pubbies are never people I want to interact with substantially. The in-game voice chat in almost every console game is ass quality anyway, historically speaking. Hell it's ass in most PC games.

I don't see why it can't be an option to have with friends, but at the same time I don't really see it as a huge loss either, because I can just run Skype with my pals while I'm in-game and actually understand what they're saying.

- 15 singleplayer challenges and "5 rare pieces of gear" for each of the 3 Amiibos

Perhaps it is a mistranslation, or perhaps it is PR speak, but that phrasing makes me think you can earn this gear in the game, it's just difficult/time consuming.

CBS News 2016: "Teen commits suicide over harassment in Nintendo game."

What's Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare's classification? Probably the closest point of reference to Splatoon in a number of ways.

If it doesn't get a party system, where I can team up with a friend and join the queue, (Smash is missing this!!!) I don't know then. Just half the fun...
I'm getting it anyways, but pls. This has to be an option

The big concern going into this game was how large a community it would gather to prolong the life of the game online. Having no voice chat won't be doing that aspect any favors.

Everything sounds ace... Save for that voice chat thing, that seriously makes no sense at all and sounds like a really crappy excuse.

!

I just remembered that there is a modern team based online shooter that had something much better than voice chat: Tribes: Ascend. I loved that game's macro system. Not saying Splatoon has such a system as they would've mentioned it in defense over this voice controversy, but I still want it mentioned that you can forego voice chat if you account for it with something else (that isn't shit.)

Shazbot!

E10+

*gasp*

So there's at least one? Because people keeps naming other games that are M in most cases.

EDIT:
Yes, clearly online chat is to blame for the horrible optimization of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.../s

Well XY are more recent examples, perhaps they could learn from other studios...

No, all you've done is move goalposts

I didn't, but if you want to believe that be my guest.

How about you try sticking to one argument.

How many Call of Duty games are rated E?

I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

Shh... Don't spoil it. :P
