Splice (Natali; Brody, Polley)

Just came back home from seeing this movie and frankly this movie is a big WTF. First the scientists are huge hipsters, not just how they dressed but by their apartment. The was huge anime drawing in the bedroom. The couple then went a big time meeting with the company funding their project in hipster gear, ok fine they are hipsters, we know already. The previews of the movie made it look like a horror flick, but it becomes a twisted sick perverted way of scientists playing GOD, then in the last 10 or less mins the movie decided to be a horror film.

No, I'm aware of that and not judging this movie pre-maturely. I'm just wondering if any logic was put into this creature other than "it has to be deadly, so by chance it turns out that this creature is basically a ultra-killing weapon".
Just curious.
Honestly it makes absolutely no sense, basically nothing does in the entire movie...It defies logic, it defies reason.

It feels like a Cronenberg movie, but the execution is seriously terrible. I'm flabbergasted at the reviews. Most of them just seem to say Hollywood is doing something different so let's praise it! Yet most of this has been done and better at that.
For someone so entrenched in everything cinema, I can't believe you pulled the "Hollywood" card as it being some monolithic entity that creates movies, especially when the movie you're referring to was made in Canada with partial financing from the Canadian government.

I was referring to the fact that when a film gets a massive wide release many people relate that with the Hollywood system, whether it was made like that or distributed like that (in Splice's case). If it didn't have this wide release it would just be a shitty Canadian film I suppose.

Just saw this. I really wasn't expecting this level of creepy. I thought it was a brilliant film but very hard to watch, especially when you realize
she's having her own inbred child
I mean, holy fuck.

It's okay to hate the movie, but when you focus so sharply on what the scientists are wearing and what they have around their bedroom, it just seems ridiculous. It seems as if you are just capitalizing on a chance to spout your irrational hate of hipsters (a silly meaningless term for individuals who you believe are cooler than yourself).

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess you're a hipster. It was a little over the top but it didn't really affect the film either way for me

That's my point...Out of all the ridiculous shit that was going on in the movie, harking on the scientist's clothing just seems idiotic to me.

I would like to know what a couple of people actually thought of the movie. This doesn't sound like an objective review, more like a preference....

If you can stand really creepy shit then go see it, it's a good movie.

Movie was great fun. Ending is contrived and stupid, but GAF would like this if this was directed by Nolan.
My thoughts exactly...
I can't believe what she said in the end, it was so fucking stupid...

Is it worth the 7-8 bucks or is it worth the *coughharddrivespacecough*?

I saw it twice, really enjoyed it. The first time was on release night and it was just fun watching it with a large audience with everyone gasping and ewing... second time was last night, met a friend at the theater and had a good time watching it again. The sounds Dren makes and the funny way she walks when she's young had my friends and I in stitches imitating it after the show :lol

While I liked the end, the way the story progressed, I thought it was the weakest part in terms of the way they handled it, but just the last 15 minutes after they
bury Dren
.
Dren becoming male was an interesting twist, him raping Elsa and killing off everyone else was shocking, and the baby thing at the end is "interesting" to think about.

Don't expect a horror movie though. It's very much science fiction with a strong emphasis on the whole human-being god complex dilemma.

:lol this movie is fucked up
called the sex changes, rape, adrien brody falling for it, impregnating the chick...etc

I posted in the other thread:

Just got back. A mostly silent car ride back with my friend and we had to smoke a cig before leaving. I'm more than a little perturbed. Those eyes are going to stay with me for awhile.

Great, got exactly what I was expecting and more

I'd go see it that way you can enjoy being weirded out and laughing hysterically with a bunch of people...It really is a great social experience.

the whole
sex part on (both people)
was ridiculous!

Actually the whole movie was, I do not understand why it's 74% @ RT

uhh yeah,
it kinda was the climax (pun intended) of the movie.

edit: Because it is so entertaining, classic B-movie awesomeness.

Damn... this movie has some really nasty moments. I was in shock when the credits started to roll.

It's not a horror movie, it shouldn't be sold as such. I don't know what it is exactly, but it's creepy in unexpected ways. Great movie.

I couldn't disagree more with the negative reviews. This had the classic feel of a Universal Monster Movie mixed with a healthy dose of modern day science fear mongering. I was absolutely captivated by not only the evolution of Dren throughout this film but also by the quick decay of moral and ethical boundaries that can be witnessed in the two protagonists.

It's uncomfortable at times which is obviously intentional. Sure, I even had a giggle but any film that is willing to take chances like Splice has my approval and this film is a complete success.

I've seen very few good films this year and I have to say this one is at the top of my list so far. Great film!

Sarah Polley as essentially a
mad scientist
who perversely projected her own wants and desires onto her subject was a neat twist on the usual convention. Would love to see more of her in a sequel if that were ever possible.

Just went and seen at a local dollar show since it's in between the whole Theater and DVD schedule. So happy I only paid $3.00 for this, what a weird movie- not necessarily bad but I was just kind of put off by it the whole time.

I'm watching it now and freaking out majorly.

Freaky shit!

Amazing to see the people involved in cube are involved here, loved the 2nd move of that series! Loving this.. but so so freaky.

Edit: @ the ending. Holy Fook.
