Splinter Cell: Will there be one this gen?

Ubisoft games with AAA budgets have become a genre of their own... and I really dislike it. I can't say I want to see anything from their catalog get a sequel.

Ubisoft have fallen a fair bit the past 5 years or so, it would be amazing to see them make quality games like Advanced Warfighter and Chaos Theory once again. It is a shame so many of their games seem to follow a specific formula, they used to be such a well regarded company. Whilst I was playing Splinter Cell Blacklist there were moments I had forgotten I was even playing a Splinter Cell at all, it reminded me way too of Ghost Recon Future Solider for it to feel fresh.

Most of my favourite games or franchises either have games out now or coming soon. The biggest thing missing is Splinter Cell though.

I'd love another one, great campaign, coop and online versus.

I kind of hope the series is dead. The series went so far off the rails and has become so unenjoyable (at least, as a stealth game) that I'd prefer Ubi put their resources towards something else. The first 3 games are great. Still are. But that was a looooong time ago, and they've long since lost the magic.

You should probably try out Blacklist!

I remember Jade Raymond saying that the new studio she was managing in Montral would be doing the next Splinter Cell alongside new IP.

So it might be releasing this year or have been canned.

Her new studio is EA Motive, not under Ubisoft. They're working on Star Wars with Visceral alongside another game.

Blacklist was a return to form though.
They made some glaring omissions: analog movement speed, light meter, sound meter (he's sliding across gravel for fuck's sake), shoulder swap.

These are core Spliter Cell. And they're AWOL.

Before that, she was given the reigns of building a new studio at Ubisoft Toronto. Or it might be mixing up my timeline, and this was in relation to the latest Splinter Cell game.

It did have analog movement while in cover and near enemies. I thought the way it was handled was smart.

Great pic.

Literally explains my #1 complaint with Blacklist and why I cannot play through it, to this day. It's not Splinter Cell to me.

Lack off shoulder swap was unforgivable sin #2.

The series certainly feels like a different beast entirely now, I don't mind the gameplay though I feel it is more suitable for a different franchise. It is also kind of worrying to see such a shift in tone for the series, Blacklist seemed to lack some of the charm and quality of the older games imo. It felt a half step away from being generic.

I liked Conviction. I also liked Blacklist.

But Blacklist would have been best if Ironside was in it. I will never get over it.

If you are role-playing as a silent, efficient stealth killer, there is no other voice that fits that role better than Ironside.

The movie Taken would have gain 10 Metacritic points by dubbing Ironside over Neeson.

Damn, now I'm really in the market for a good stylish, stealth killer game. I just watched that movie John Wick the other day. Panther playstyle. A. little action never hurt.

That was Splinter Cell Blacklist, which came out in 2013. She's left Ubisoft and went to EA since then.

I think, as some have already said in here, that it was a huge mistake releasing Blacklist so late last gen, and not even porting it for the current consoles.

It was a pretty good game.

Now, with AC, The Division, Far Cry and Watch Dogs... I think Ubisoft has it's hands full with major franchises... I think it'll be a while before we see another SC.

Blacklist was alright, it wasn't the same experience but it was quite fun to play. The game didn't do so well but what's baffling that they didn't port that up to new consoles, it came out at a really bad time, close to GTAV and new gen. They ported games like Rayman Legends and Zombiu but not this, really? I think the game deserved a second chance.

I would love to play a new Splinter Cell. I just hope they don't fall into the UBI open world trap. Open world in stealth games should just mean that I can approach a base in various ways. It doesn't even have to be connected just a series of MGS:GZ style levels would be perfect.

While some gamers are dead set against them, I feel that Blacklist is the perfect title due for a remaster.

I love remasters, but I think one underutilized role for them is to give series and/or games that might have been overlooked last gen a new lease on life.

Blacklist was an absolute blast for me to play. If they rereleased it on current gen, brought back Michael Ironside and maybe tweaked the level design in a few places, it could be a great game.

I wouldn't mind a reboot honestly.

This.

Also, destroy that Blacklist menu, Mass Effect hub. That was kitchen sink levels and painful to replay the game.I would like them go back to basics and not rely on XP and money. Less gamey as well, save that for an arcade mode. I just want a simple menu, clutter free UI, world wide missions, simple loadouts, less characters and fun stealth.

You should play Blacklist.

My guess (and my hope!) is it's their annual E3 game at the end to really catch people's attention.

I think the series still has a lot of life left in it, and that bringing it back every few years works to its benefit.

They should release it right when they announce it.

You know, because it'd be sneaky & in your face or something.

As opposed to a quiet release.

Blacklist is great and I'm very happy for Fisher that he has Benjamin Button syndrome, he's gonna live a long life!

replace Fisher with the black dude ffs, unless he died cause I didn't finish Blacklist

I didn't finish Blacklist

I'd be really curious to play a new Splinter Cell game in a post-MGSV world.

Blacklist really was on of the gems of the last gen, hopefully Ubi won't lose sight of what made that game great.

Blacklist really came out at the wrong time :/

Should have been a launch title for the new consoles.

Agreed, it literally came out right before GTAV and the new gen...Almost like they sent it to the grave, that game deserved to be on the new gen systems and with a fall release

I hope so.
In a year where Last of Us and GTAV came out, Blacklist still was the most fun I had with a videogame, in 2013.
It was great, I hope they keep that up and don't try to reinvent the wheel.

It would be excellent to see Sam Fisher return once again, though it would be nice to have Michael Ironside back, his voice made Splinter Cell for me. It would also be nice for the series to take on a different artistic approach, some Ubisoft games are really feeling samey right now. I thought the older titles looked beautiful.

FUCK, right in the nostalgia.

Goddamn I need to play some Splinter Cell again

Maybe we can have our cakes and eat them. I'd buy Original, Pandora and Chaos as remakes. I'd buy the SHIT out of them.

Why would a new Splinter Cell not come out on PS4? Of all the 6 mainline games, only Conviction has skipped PlayStation platforms.

As for a new title, of course it'll happen. Don't think this year though. They might wanna regroup on how to capture back that core base back instead of allowing freedom to choose different styles of play that are alien to both the series and the fans. FORCE STEALTH, PERIOD. That said, ghosting in Blacklist was so good and at instances, even comparable to the original game and Chaos Theory IMHO.

The dream would be Ubi Montreal making a sequel, but given their priorities are the go to developer for Ubi's annual open world franchises, I doubt this'll happen at all, unless they're going full on MGSV inspired (there were a lot of design cues straight up from Peace Walker in Blacklist) design which would need a developer of Ubi Montreal's caliber, to even reach half of what V did in gameplay. This might be a huge game for Ubi and a 50% chance of taking off if done right so the risk to too high to invest more than they've ever done before in the IP.

Personally, I don't mind a linear Splinter Cell though, again, force stealth and punish alerts even more vigorously than the original game (CT is where it became lenient in this regard), surveillance cams positions in unexpected corridors, NERF if not remove sticky shockers/sleeping gas in ANY form of a weapon (or just allow sleeping gas with sticky cams), and more overall emphasis on ghosting.

They should've kept Ironside as an old, mentor Fisher (maybe use him in the prologue/tutorial) and have Briggs be the main character afterwards, through the rest of the game.
Goddamn no brainer.

You're right. For some reason I thought that Blacklist didn't release on the PS3. Silly me.

They should test the water with Blacklist Remastered. I never played it and heard it's great.

If it sells well enough, then go with a full sequel later in the gen when development environments have matured further.

Wouldn't it be cool if Ubisoft teases Splinter Cell at E3 with a pitch black screen for a couple of seconds and then the signature night vision sound coupled with the green lights slowly turning on and suddenly the line: "I'm back" by Ironside. Then, BAMMM logo on screen... Splinter Cell: Restructure.

Too cheesy?

I need Michael Ironside back. I agree with the general feeling that Blacklist had great gameplay, but for me, I missed analogue movement (three different moving speeds aren't enough for me).

But really, please bring back Mike. It didn't feel like Splinter Cell without him.

Just have it tag along with the division's storyline about the creation of the virus. Thus rounding out the backstory about how that stuff comes to be.

I'm a dummy and actually love all the Tom Clancy reoccurring characters and stuff in the games. I don't know why they don't do more crossover between Clancy games. Small things like mentioning the Ghosts in an intel file or referencing Rainbow Team in a briefing would actually make me perk up. Since The Division is looking MMO-ish, I'm sure there will be a bunch of easter eggs tied to other Clancy and even other ubisoft games.

Let me roleplay as Jack Ryan or Ding Chavez
