Spoiler free - how has The Walking Dead Season 2 been?

More like a novel than a game. Good story with little to do with choices. No platinum :*(

Welp there goes my reason to play that game, only platinum i have is from the first walking dead. Also first walking dead on Ps3 fucking sucked ass in terms of performance, does season 2 got better framerate?

I can't comment in regards to the performance on consoles, but I've had zero issues on PC.

The magic is gone really. The episodes are shorter, it's increasingly obvious that the choices don't matter at all, the characters aren't nearly as memorable and what little actual gameplay/puzzle solving that the first game had has been entirely abandoned. There are sections where you leave a cutscene, walk forward for about 20 feet and then another cutscene takes over.

Also, while this won't matter after today, I personally felt the discussions surrounding the episodes this time around were far less interesting than season one. The excitement just seems to have dropped a few notches. Either because of the lower quality or because people know that choices don't matter.

Telltale decided new episode would be 90 minutes so they could be completed by most people in one sitting.
Soif anyone is wondering why the episodes are shorter that's the reason TTG gave.

Interesting. Hadn't heard they actually explained it. Thanks.

Yeah. I believe I'm just going to wait until multiple episodes are released for season 2 of TWAU and season 3 of TWD before I buy the season passes because of this reason. It was not only torture waiting on each episode to be released, but it kind of left a sour taste in my mouth after paying the full price up front only to have it go on a Steam sale a few weeks/month or two later.

Yeah, I am very much thinking the same thing. Although I worry about having it spoiled for me, which may push me to get them ahead of time anyway

My biggest issue with it is that the choices you make have even less impact than before and the play time is way shorter than before. I get like an hour and half out of one episode usually. Still hooked though.

I've enjoyed season 2 but I agree with others when they say the choices seem even more transparent than season 2. It sucks that even though people have had different plays through their game with their choices of who lives and who dies, the choices become pretty arbitrary when some of those characters just end up dead anyway.

Makes me feel like the narrative was built with the knowledge that they would just wrap around story beats instead of creating an actual dynamic branch based of our decisions. would be cool if dialog wasn't the only thing that changes from your story to mine. Would be even better if who lives and who dies actually carried the weight they seem to think our choices have as well. I haven't played the last episode yet so maybe they actually have different endings that will mean something for season 3.

Slightly, but not really.

I haven't played Season 2 yet, but I think it will be difficult to match Season 1 by the very nature of Season 2's player character.

Very disappointing to hear, especially the bolded. I replayed Season 1/DLC in anticipation of Season 2's final release and subsequent sale, and I really think the small amounts of puzzle-y gameplay are what makes Walking Dead so good. There's just enough incidental/personal dialog to really make you fall into the role and make each playthrough unique, versus Wolf Among Us and its highly linear, scripted progression. In the end, I guess Season 2 is just tiding up the TellTale Walking Dead universe so they can freely sequel it to infinity afterwards.

In spite of this disappointment I'm still buying Season 2 when it goes on sale.
I'm part of the problem.

I have a related question about Season 2: does the 400 Days DLC make much of impact on Season 2? (As per the OP, no spoilers in the reply please.)

As someone who was going to wait until the whole thing was out to buy it, this thread is definitely making me want to wait until a Steam sale.

I've enjoyed it but I think I'm done with Tell tale games now.

I was LTTP with the first season which I loved. I then bought the 440 days, Wolf Among us and season two in short succession and I'm just burnt out with the "gameplay"

I have enjoyed the story though and it is a teeny bit less buggy I feel.

Also I should say if ever do play another one I am defiantly NOT buying the season pass early again. Burnt big time with the sales for all of these titles shortly after release.

In about 30 minutes, furiously refresh the store page for Walking Dead Season 2 (found here). There will almost certainly be a midweek sale to celebrate the release of Season 2 Episode 5.

The only thing up in the air is what the discount will be... Personally, I'm betting on 50% off, just as it was for Walking Dead S1 Ep5's release.

It doesn't have a plot. It just has a series of minor plots without connecting to anything greater than "north maybe?".

IMO, it should have been

1. Intro (with them more clearly establishing a value to moving North other than "snow lol") -> Making Clem a full crew member
2-3. Carver/introduce Russian mafia (with the baby coming sooner and Clem convincing the group going North is the way to go)
4-5. Russian Mafia (finally getting North and running into Christa again in the process)

I've only played eps 1 and 2, I quickly lost interest. Big step down from TWD s1 and TWAU imo.

Edit: The PS version of s2 doesn't have a platinum even though s1 did? God, their rules for trophies are all kinds of ass-backwards. InFamous First Light has one.

I've been enjoying it. Like playing as Clem, although I hafta say the supporting characters aren't as memorable this time.

For the record, I haven't played episode 4 yet.

Honestly I think Season 2 is a little bit weaker than the first season, I like the supporting Cast in S1 better than the Cast of S2. But since S2-EP5 is out today maybe it will end strong hopefully.

It's okay. There's a lot of retread of themes from the first game, but unlike that, you dont have a clear goal (ie in S1 you had to find clem's parents, in WAU you had to solve the mystery, etc) and it ends up coming across as "a bunch of things happened to our characters. The end" without feeling like a complete story.

I have not personally played 400 Days, but from what I can see in S2 and the opinions in the spoiler thread, the answer is "no, not at all really."

If Season 2 has a very strong ending, I'd say that it is on par with Season 1. Anything less than an amazing conclusion, and Season 2 will be "pretty good, but not as good as season 1."

Agreed completely. My biggest complaint about this season isn't the lack of choice, but of puzzle solving and exploration. The first season kept trying new gameplay mechanics like shooting, while this season, Telltale clearly gave up before they even finished the first episode. By episode 3, it's almost all just picking dialogue options. It speeds up the game, sure, but it loses a lot in the process.

I suppose that's to be expected.. oh well.

At least the DLC's set-up is interesting, if nothing else.

NinjaEdit
There's one character from 400 Days that joins up with the group. The others are given small, unimportant cameos.

Hooray! (It's better than nothing...)

My problem is its pacing. In the first game, the dramatic parts were so much more tense because you were more invested and because they were more spaced out with slower gameplay sections. In S2, it feels like things go to shit in every episode, after a while you just stop caring.

That could however be just a part of the game, that you're supposed to become a different Clem, a more blasé and cold Clem finally coming to terms with the apocalypyse.

If that's the case, it's a geniously written game. If that's not the case, it's just sloppy writing.

how does it work with your S1 data?

I have it on my Xbox 360, so do I have to play it there?

Season 1 was better and it would be harsh to expect S2 to beat it.

Still, S2 has been enjoyable as a visual novel, and the action still gets intense. The problem is that the "downtime" is almost non-existent and when it does happen, it disappoints.

It follows the season 1 pattern of first episode good, second episode okay, third episode great, fourth episode terrible, fifth episode great. I'd go for season 2 if you can get it on sale.

It's fine - but not nearly as good as the first season in my opinion.

My main issue is that they don't spend enough time with any of the new characters to build much connection to them. As a result, I can barely remember most of their names.

Also, the seams are showing on the decisions more. If you make the 'wrong' choice, the plot will bend back to the 'right' choice in a way that doesn't always make sense.

But it's mostly fine!

This sounds awful.

WOW, that shit was straight up broken in the first game so it's sad to see it hasn't been fixed, teh first game drop into the single digit sometimes.

If you want a game with more options than TWD, I'd go with The Wolf Among Us. I think it's a good in-between TWD Season 1 & 2. There's some puzzles, you choices seem to matter, and the characters are great. The worst part is still the stuttering and locking up on the PS3.

It's not as clever as season 1 was in terms of making it seem like your choices matter. Lots of the new characters aren't very interesting, so it's difficult to care about what happens to them.

Clementine is a great character, but there are way too many instances where the adult characters can't make up their minds and it falls on her to "make the decision" and it feels forced.

Also, the other characters are constantly confiding in her or asking her for advice and it doesn't seem realistic that grown men and women would be expecting so much out of an 11 year old.

It's a bit disappointing after season 1, but I'm still enjoying it.

I like the way the gameplay is for this game. I think they have just set the bar to high with Season 1 now. The feels that game gave me man. Such feels.

Pretty much how i feel. Would've been hard to top season 1 but I still enjoyed season 2. Definitely excited for season 3.

If the rest of the episodes did a better job of building up to the final episode, it'd probably have edged out S1 for me. As it is, it was good, but the overall quality wasn't as high IMO. Final episode was great though, maybe because they actually had some drastically branching choices (which will probably get disregarded anyway lol).

I just beat the last episode, and got dayum it was excellent. Reminds me of Ace Attorney 2 in that the game was mostly meh, but the last episode is one of the best in the series.

The Walking Dead: Chapter 2 is the Dark Souls 2 of The Walking Dead. It looks the part and is close to what you want, but it's ultimately unsatisfying in the end.

S1 vs S2
Episode 1: Season 1
Episode 2: Season 2
Episode 3: Season 1
Episode 4: Season 1
Episode 5: Season 2

Overall, yeah S1 was had the better season and characters as well the most feels, but I think Season 2 had the better choices and outcomes especially with Episode 5.

The biggest and most prominent hook with season 1 was role playing as a father or father figure. The ending of the season was predictable from the start, but it hit hard, really hard. I haven't played season 2, but playing as Clementine seems like such wasted potential for another theme. Season 1 was about being a guardian/parent in a broken, and never repairable world.

Season 2 should've been about the death of friendship or brotherhood. Following a group of college/highschool friends and each chapter slowly showing how friendships wither away seems like it would be interesting.

I had my hopes up for more diversity and deeper consequences of choices, but it ended up being less of that. In many conversations, you couldn't even change the attitude of the counterpart no matter what options you chose, sometimes all the options are basically the same answer - in season 1 you could at least make the others far less respectful, it really changed the tone of their talking.

The story telling is nice, a playable novel, but I don't think I will be picking up season 3 unless it's dirt cheap. And then I will surely give up on the second playthrough where I try to screw up as much as possible.

Do choices matter at the end of season 2? The problem I have with this game is that whatever choice you make, the game always somehow forces you on the same path as everyone else, just to follow the script. If the game gives you the option to save someone, you can make pretty sure he dies later on.
