Spooky Poo's Happy Hell - 3D platformer inspired by Mario 64/Banjo [Kickstarter]

How the hell does this thread not gain any traction? I think it looks quite promising!

originally the screenshot in the OP was much less flattering and the art style is a little clipart like. I think that had something to do with it. I'm with you, though. I think it looks decent

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but this looks like any number of nameless, by-the-numbers N64 platformers that I played just because they existed and I had nothing better to do. Pretty ambitious for one guy though.
Yeah, like when all of the Ocarina of Time copies were already rented out at BlockBuster.

Also... What's with the skull penis Attack?

If you guys check out the 2nd update theres a prototype to download. Playing with a keyboard was kind of fiddly (Im sure its a lot easier with a controller) but the basic controls felt really good for an early prototype.

Thanks, just checked out the demo. It was a bit rough around the edges, but still really fun! After much tribulation, I managed to find all 10 powers. There were quite a few clever "A Ha!" moments where you had to do something unexpected to access a new area. The controls definitely need work and he needs to do a better job explaining certain things, but I'm definitely keeping my eye out for this one.

(beaten, but posting it anyway)

Looks like it could be all right.

If people are interested, these are some of the cheapest "design part of the game" tiers I've seen. It costs twice as much to get a t-shirt as it does to design a magic object and have it implemented, heh.

This game looks far more unique than the other 3D platformers I've seen on Kickstarter in the last few months. I hope it's successful.

This looks interesting. I would love to see more 3D Platformers out there. I'm not really a fan of the whole Kickstarter thing, but I'll try and keep an eye out for this game. And if it does release I'll gladly pick up a copy of it.

Funny how we have posters clamouring for 3D Platformers and when we finally get some the majority of posters hate them.
I'll probably end up buying it, though that might just be me being overly optimistic.

You know what? I went ahead and threw a few bucks his way. I'm not sure I fully grasp his vision of the project and it looks a little rough aesthetically (though it does look fairly promising in motion), but these types of games are few and far between and I think it's a small price to pay for one guy going it alone and trying to bring a good old platformer to fans of the genre.

I don't know what differentiates a "magick object" from a "good object," but I pledged for the former. I hope others consider pledging as well-- maybe not for the game itself and what they want out of it, but as a way to support this guy and what he's trying to accomplish.

Maybe I'm just feeling charitable today, though. If I held this mindset every time I looked at a Kickstarter project, I'd be broke with more than a few bad investments.

i wasnt really into the floppy nose until i saw it was being incorporated into most of the attacks/powers. it wraps back around to feeling like a 30s cartoon when its being used to pick up objects or fire projectiles.

I'll pledge if he makes a Steam copy tier.

I think that depends on if the game gets greenlit on steam,

Considering there's a lot worse already on steam id be surprised if this doesn't make the cut

Even though there's a lot of negativity in this thread its pretty clear the dudes got heart I hope the KS and GL are both successes

I don't mind how it looks; it's going for a PS1 platformer look and given the 1 man team, I wouldn't expect much more.

My concern is reading the stuff about the multiple ways to get Good Things, multiple routes/exits, choosing whether to sell your soul for powers, all seems neat but a little ambitious considering how small that initial <$14k budget seems. I'll have to think about this.

(as an aside: seeing the title, I clicked on this expecting the main character to literally be poop, like Mr. Hanky)

I know this is early footage, but it's kind of annoying to see kickstarters say that they're inspired by Mario 64, only to release a video in which they have a character that looks like it controls like garbage.

In fact, I haven't seen a single kickstarted 3D platformer that looks like it's even 1/4th as fun to control as Mario 64. Hell, most of them don't even look as fun to control as banjo, who was much less acrobatic than mario.

Most people have heard about how Miyamoto and crew spent so much time getting the feel of Mario right before even designing levels. That's what these people need to do.

Main character design vaguely reminds me of Klonoa 2, if it's any consolation. He'd fit in as an enemy in that game.

But I actually kinda like this concept. Seems way more promising than the 3D platformer with a bunny and monkey.

(All with only one guy, too? Damn)

Also, if the gameplay pans out, we could have a very replayable game on our hands.

Yeah this is what impressed me, one guy doing this in 6 months. Some of the posts in here seem overly harsh for a solo project that's like ~30% done.

Looks fun, but the flying... I hated it in Mario 64 and I will probably hate it here.

It says you can complete the game without the use of his abilities so it's optional.

These ghoulish grabbies grant Spooky Poo one unique ability in exchange for a little soul. By selling Spooky's soul this way, you can buy greater mastery over the underworld. Your path to power is shaped by your path through Hell and how you overcome its challenges. Search, think and fight to win more powers.

The usefulness of particular magick powers becomes obvious in many situations, but players can choose to favour certain styles of gameplay at their own pace whether it's shooting, acrobatics, or obsessive sleuthing.

Also, the Devil wants to point out that although it's more fun to blow through Hell with black magick powers, it is entirely possible to survive all the way to His doorstep without selling any of Spooky's soul. Doing it the "good" way, whole soul, is for a special kind of player though...

I love the theming it has going on, and Spooky Poo reminds me of something from an old Warner Bros. cartoon. Think Porky in Wackyland, but more demonic.

The cloud area in the prototype is gorgeous. This is obviously trying to be a 1930s cartoon in 3D, and it succeeds in animation. The lead is very pliable and has really neat powers, and his idle animations are really cute and expressive.

The music is also straight out of an old Betty Boop cartoon.

The enemies are creepy but in a very cute, fun sort of way. Everything has a face, even a brick wall, just like those sort of cartoons.

These fuckers right here are very inventive visually, and really make the area you find them in look good.

The controls could be better, as could the camera, but it's an old prototype, so I'm not too worried right now.

Added that screen to the OP, looks good.

I haven't tried the prototype for myself yet, the guy said it was super rough and he didn't want people to experience the game in that state so I held off.

It is super rough, so I can understand that, but it definitely shows potential.

The camera is ass right now, but I think the basic handling and jumps feel really good. Getting all of the jump powers and quaduple jumping around the test maps is a lot of fun and feels great.

Sorry for the grimy gifs:

pulling off the long jump felt a little weird at first, but once i got used to pulling it off by spinning the analog stick it felt a lot better. Not as natural as crouch jumping like in Mario though.

Something about this is striking the right chords for me.

I'm actually pretty intrigued and think he should spend the lion's share of time absolutely nailing the gameplay.

Looks like update #4 just went up detailing the stretch goals

QD48CSi.png

We're still in our first week and we've already reached a third of our goal! There's nearly 100 of you lovely people supporting Happy Hell. Brilliant! Thank you!

Now, I think it's high time we talk about Spooky's Wish, his soul, and how some of the stretch goals relate to it.

Spooky's wish is determined by the number of Soul Suckers/powers used throughout the game. Without meeting any stretch goals, the only wish possibilities will be those determined by the $666 backers (and at least one from me).

By breaking the first stretch goal, I can greatly elaborate on the idea. First of all, this means more wish possibilities, which means more ways to play through the game and earn them. In this case there will be one wish for each power (at least 12). So maybe on your first playthrough you want to get all the powers. Second time through you say, "I wonder how well I'll do if I avoid the cape, or the broom..." Each approach will offer its own challenges. Gaining all the black magick powers will be the standard, most straight forward approach. The more abilities you avoid, the more you'll have to rely on solving secret puzzles and exploring every nook and cranny.

There's no "right" or "wrong" ending, although the wishes themselves will arguably be more righteous or wicked. Let's say you sell all of Spooky's soul. Then maybe he becomes the new dark overlord of the world and burns it to the ground. Sell no soul at all and perhaps he brings world peace. There will also be a Wish Gallery where you can view all of your past endings.

And there's more! Once the underworld gets just a little taste of Spooky's soul, it will desperately crave more and act differently in some subtle ways. Let's take a simple enemy as an example. It has speed, patrol area, damage, health and so on. I can change these stats depending on how much of Spooky's soul has been sold so it becomes more aggressive.

Finally, this first stretch goal will also allow me to make the final boss more special. I don't want to give too much away but...basically, if you make it to the final boss having sold no soul, you will be weak but Satan cannot have any power over you (mess with your controls, play mind games). If you've sold ALL of your soul, you're quite powerful but more vulnerable to manipulation. That's all I'll say for now!

I also want to address one more stretch goal before this update is over. The NG+ goal. This would allow me to take these ideas even further and allow Spooky to win some object/ability with each wish after beating the game. This prize could then carry over into your next playthrough. Again, I don't want to reveal too much so I'll use a kind of daft example: You beat the game after keeping Spooky's soul intact? That unlocks a little guardian angel that attacks enemies like a sentry gun. I just made that up! I'm not going to reveal these things just yet.
