When Electronic Arts held its press conference at this year's E3 Media and Business Summit in Santa Monica, one title was notably absent--Will Wright's Spore.

Seven years in the making so far, the epic game from the creator of the madly successful Sims series will be a life-simulation game where players grow a creature from a single-celled organism, create the creature's society, explore its world, and ultimately venture to other planets. It is currently set for a 2008 release, although EA CEO John Riccitiello recently said that, "its release will be right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal '08], if not some time in early fiscal '09, so we don't feel comfortable in forecasting it."

While it won't be readily available for some time yet, Spore will have the chance to entertain Games Convention attendees. A slate of EA's titles at the Games Convention 2007 in Leipzig shows Spore will be playable by journalists for the first time at the event.

The Liepzig Games Convention is set for August 23-26. GameSpot will be providing full coverage from the show, so stay tuned for more on Spore and the rest of the games on display.

Also the team was really small for a few of those years, just programmers getting the core tech functional, IIRC.

That, and we have seen Spore, multiple times, as a full and functional game, being played, by people and not just developers. Duke Nukem Forever had a trailer in 2000 or something.

Excellent. I've been reading a (fairly old) New Yorker article about Will Wright - it covers a previous E3 demonstration, and so much about Spore sounds so exciting even back then. The stuff about how, in a sense, the playing through the game's evolutionary stages encloses a playing through of the history of videogames is just so stylish. The writer does say something like that when Wright talks about Spore actually releasing, his eyes go a little bit 'lost'.

Welcome to the creature editor being sort of playable by a very small number of people, starting at E3 2006. Nobody but Wright has actually demonstrated any gameplay.

That's a stupid attitude to take. Even if Spore isn't too demanding of the processor and the content is super compressible (which I am confident will be the case), I'm having a hard time imagining that WiiConnect24 will suffice for the kind of online experience Spore promises, given that it's about as close to an MMORPG as you can get without actually being multiplayer.

It can't? Really? If you've been following the game's development you know that if your computer can run XP, it will probably run Spore. It is not a game that will require high specs, or even close--crazy demoscene programmers worked hard, and are presumably still working hard, to make that possible.

And even if it couldn't, probably no game is more deserving of an upgraded PC than Spore.

The game is pretty heavily anticipated outside of GAF. A lot of people know about it and have heard about it, thank to the mainstream media coverage it always gets when it's mentioned. But on GAF it always seems to be almost ignored, with the excuse usually being that it'll never come out since the "my computer can't run it" one doesn't really apply to Spore. Obviously that's not the case given what's going on at Leipzig this year, yet still this thread is quiet while Boogie's poor review gets five pages. Believe, GAF. BELIEVE.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but I find it puzzling that so many awesome things are being shown at Leipzig, a games convention in Germany.

Having a gaming convention in Germany is akin to having a democracy convention in China =/
