Spotify is bringing back ads...To Premium Subscribers

People are overreacting like crazy. I've already been listening to music for an hour+ and haven't seen a popup yet.

It's just adding to the fact that Spotify updates are getting worse every fucking time. I don't think there was a time when the desktop app and the mobile app were working totgether properly.

There is ALWAYS a feature missing. I'm still baffled by the removal of local files synch.

Seems like a test balloon to give artists incentive to keep their catalogue on the service. Judging by the reactions I doubt they'll keep it going.

Oh, and thread-title is slightly sensationalist.

Been thinking of dropping spotify. Don't know what to replace it with, I need to be able to cache from wifi on my phone and not use mobile data while listening.

Had Spotify running all day yesterday and never noticed an ad. Then again, I'm not looking at it a whole lot. Been checking it today and not noticing anything so far.

rihanna is getting on my nerves with this song push.
1st the jimmy kimmel april fool travesty now this?

I found out(I think lurking on PopGAF or in a Rihanna thread or something like that) that she's a very big singles seller.

So her label pimping out her album just to sell a couple of singles just seems like standard business.

Same. Do the other music services do that too? That's one of my favorite features of spotify.

What on Earth is going on at Spotify HQ? Why are they actively making their desktop client objectively worse with every update?

I have an email chain of about 10 emails with customer support trying to get an explanation as to why they removed 'CTRL - F' to find etc from the client. I got so much bullshit and marketing talk without a single answer. Eventually, the guy just told me he couldn't tell me why.

It was something like this:

"Why did you remove CTRL F to find. It was very useful to have and I can't think of a reason why it would be removed."

"We're constantly striving to improve the client and add new features"

"Ok, so why did you remove CTRL - F to find?"

"We are changing the client so it is more cohesive across platforms"

"Ok, so why did you remove CTRL - F"

"We update our client regularly and sometimes intended features do not make it in"

"Ok, so why did you release the client if it was unfinished and you didn't have time to put it in?"

"We intend to re-implement CTRL F to find in a future update"

"Ok, so if you're going to put it back in, why did you take it out and release it without the feature?"

"I don't know".

I wonder if anyone of the people screaming that they're canceling actually read the article, or just the thread title?

Seriously, it seems like no one read the OP. If infrequent enough, this could actually be a nice feature. But as said earlier in this thread, Spofity needs to fix their shit. They took out Ctrl-F search which really sucks.

Despitw the slightly misleading title, I won't have this annoyance if I stick witb Xbox Music (I was considering a switch since I Sony'd all the things).

I got sick of looking stuff up but it seemed like most of those artists had something. The selection isn't as good as spotify but it usually has something from whatever artist you are looking for.

That... really doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. As long as it isn't interrupting play it won't bother me and I predominately use Sonos to stream Spotify so I probably won't see the ads anyway.

Thanks for the help! Looks like I'll try to free version and if it at least has better radio than spotify, i might just go 100% in.

Agreed - well, the desktop app in particular is a thing of wonder. Seems they remove some form of functionality every single fucking release lately.

I'm guessing that this will happen to whatever media platform that becomes big enough. Hell, I don't think I should have to watch ads on basic cable television channels because I pay for those, but that doesn't stop them. I don't think I should have to watch any ads when I pay a premium to go to movie theaters, but I'm bombarded by them.

If everyone moves over to the next big thing (Tidal?), it will too eventually become ad-driven. The best we can do is stay ahead of the curve by always moving to the next up-and-comer. Piracy offers the best ad-free experience, of course, but is obviously illegal.

So noone in this thread read the OP? The OP is talking about ads, but they aren't even ads? Just an annoyance that you wont notice unless you are staring at your screen when you listen to music. And they will probably make it optional anyway.

Seems pretty unobtrusive considering they aren't audio ads. Rdio is pretty good aside from the lack of searchable playlists, and the web player runs much better than Spotify's.

Moving to Rdio was a gamechanger. I like it so much better than Spotify.

Yeah. I would agree. Although I use I both. I only pay for Rdio, though. Spotify still has the library advantage for sure.

But those mobile apps, doe.

Rdio's mobile apps are so damn beautiful and intuitive.

Old versions of Spotify are awesome, and as long as the old grey version (I am running 0.8.5.1356) continues to work, I will continue to pay. But the moment they force me to update to their new shitty ass version I'm canceling.

What they are doing is rewriting the desktop client. The old versions were mostly natively running code which had to be ported to Windows and Mac separately. The new version is just a web browser (Chrome) and all information is displayed as web pages. This is why the client is laggy in general - web content is never as smooth as natively running code. It's also extremely difficult to implement Ctrl+F as it was in the older versions.

What you will probably see in the future is the Ctrl+F find feature as it is on a web browser. It won't filter your playlist, it will jump to the correct spot and highlight what you are searching for.

Does rdio let you just listen to full albums? I never use playlists or radio stations. If rdio does let you do this I might have to quit Spotify.

Is this an audio ad? I don't really care that much if it's just a pop up with no sound, but if it interrupts my streaming fuck that.

Do any of the competitors offer Spotify's social features? I like seeing what my friends are listening to and seeing their playlists. Honest question; I've never tried the other services.

lol at all the "going to tidal" comments, they are better and cheaper service like Google Music, Deezer or Rdio but whatever...

Aren't they all $10 a month?

Eurgh, getting rid of the ads (the same Daredevil ad just played twice in a row) is why I'm tempted by premium.

This is not what I'm looking for.
