Spotify is bringing back ads...To Premium Subscribers

I will be infuriated if I get this ad. I don't think I've even listened to a single Rihanna song during the entirety of my Spotify subscription. I swear I will switch to another provider if this becomes common. I've been a premium member for I think almost 2 years now.

Is there an easy way to export spotify 'songs' playlist to other groups?

I might be okay with this type of thing if it targeted people who already listened to the artist, but I like that we're getting to a time when we can squeeze more advertisements out of our lives.

Let us plebs have NeoGAF Gold.

The hyperbole is strong in this thread

It really is, but at the same time I'm still unclear about exactly how this works. If I'm not listening to Rihanna, would this ever pop up? I'd call it an ad if its trying to get you to tweet someone you're not listening to. If its based off what you're listening to, I'd call it an annoying feature at worst and maybe something nice if its infrequent enough.

I used to use Pandora for the longest time before you got ads after pretty much every song. I recently started to use spotify a bit but this is disenchanting me a bit. May have to try out slacker, rdio, or use iheartradio more.

Edit: Is AOL radio still around? I used to use it back in middle school when it was the only unblocked music streaming site at my school.

Edit 2: Ah, it's powered by slacker now.

As a cheapskate free user I've never understood Spotify's advertising - it seems like a total trainwreck. They have an intimate knowledge of the music I like the most, and that of my friends, and yet persist in advertising the likes or Rhianna or similar to me (fair dos if you enjoy her music, just not my cup of tea at all). It seems that for a company whose main user base are free subscribers, they are throwing away a tonne of potential add revenue.

So a legit contender for the market makes a splash (Tidal) and the first thing you do is force ads on paying customers.

A higher no-ads pay wall is coming.

Spotify have gone to pieces. Their recent desktop client is a total shambles.

Also: why the fuck would you want to thank Rihanna for that abomination

unless microsoft makes a move to rdio or tidal and removes there service (highly unlikely)

Spotify will be here for a very long time..........especially with PS4 being the only device outside desktop that can listen to any song on command with no pay.

I think tablet and desktop are the only two devices that allow songs on demand. Mobile only offers shuffle and radio.

The amount of subs I would assume is going to go up because of how nicely built in spotify is. Playing FFXIV last night I fired up my phone, hit a playlist and selected my PS4....instantly it started playing.

Change the fucking thread title. That's the only thing people here are reading and since it's not about ads, the message gets completely scrambled.

So from what I've read in this thread amongst the angst, is it is actually a pop up you can deny once and it won't appear again.

"What you're seeing is a new feature called Tweet the Beat which lets listeners express love and appreciation towards the artists they follow or listen to often, and has been designed as a great way for fans to get closer to their favourite artists."

It's just avoiding another Taylor Swift incident. So if you don't follow or listen to Rihanna a lot....its not going to pop.

uhh no thank you. Will unsubscribe the second I see one of these ads

Talk about overreacting. I guess you're not alone, though. This is Modern Warfare 2 PC all over again.

What on Earth is going on at Spotify HQ? Why are they actively making their desktop client objectively worse with every update?

I have an email chain of about 10 emails with customer support trying to get an explanation as to why they removed 'CTRL - F' to find etc from the client. I got so much bullshit and marketing talk without a single answer. Eventually, the guy just told me he couldn't tell me why.

It was something like this:

"Why did you remove CTRL F to find. It was very useful to have and I can't think of a reason why it would be removed."

"We're constantly striving to improve the client and add new features"

"Ok, so why did you remove CTRL - F to find?"

"We are changing the client so it is more cohesive across platforms"

"Ok, so why did you remove CTRL - F"

"We update our client regularly and sometimes intended features do not make it in"

"Ok, so why did you release the client if it was unfinished and you didn't have time to put it in?"

"We intend to re-implement CTRL F to find in a future update"

"Ok, so if you're going to put it back in, why did you take it out and release it without the feature?"

"I don't know".

Why would customer service have any of the answers regarding why Ctrl-f was removed? They don't program or design the software. That's like calling Sony customer service and demanding answers about why they're charging for multiplayer.

Yeah. I would agree. Although I use I both. I only pay for Rdio, though. Spotify still has the library advantage for sure.

But those mobile apps, doe.

Rdio's mobile apps are so damn beautiful and intuitive.

I just like being able to do an artist radio without it looping over itself after 20 songs.

I will cancel my subscription if I hear a single ad, too... Actually, I'll cancel even if I see an ad. The only reason I pay for anything like Spotify is because I despise ads!

I don't even know what a good Spotify alternative is... Suggestions?

Yep. If it at all ends up being an audible ad or pop-up, that will be the very moment I unsub.

It's not and ad or an audio pop up. If you listen to Rihanna, then the popup will come up with the option to either post or cancel. Press cancel.

There problem solved.

Tidal it is....

I thought I read somewhere that Spotify wasn't making enough money with their current model . Aren't they the cheapest of these types of music apps?

Rdio, Google Music.

Hmm. Not an ad in the traditional sense but still intrusive. Pretty lame. They really should be working to improve their iOS app instead.

Christ, people are losing their minds over this. Yes, it's annoying. No, it's not "bringing back ads" (since no ad like this existed beforehand). No, it's not worth ditching Spotify for. Yes, you're overreacting.

Also...

Been using Spotify for an hour on my journey home, no pop ups.

None this morning for that hour either.

Been using Spotify for years (back when there were no limits, etc.) and subscribed to get rid of ads, etc. Going to take a lot more than a Rihanna pop up to dissuade me and migrate somewhere else.

Maybe I'm part of the problem...

That sucks but I'm not cancelling my sub because of it. The free version won't let you pick songs (forces you to use shuffle) and you can't download your playlists
