I thought I saw an OST disc for a quick second, which would have cemented it as an eventual purchase for me, honestly. That's a great package though.

Nah, it's just that combining child death with all the usual romance trappings is one of the easiest and most effective tricks in the book. I mean, Hunger Games just made $150 mil in one weeked you know :p

Well, to be fair, the Hunger Games franchise's best book has nothing to do with child death. But I digress.

Sounds good. I'm in for day 1. I hope it gets here on the 3rd though so I can celebrate U-S-A U-S-A day by watching Anohana all day.

God, so many extra pages. That's what I get for going outside and spending time with my family.

Inu x Boku SS 12

I really liked the first half of the episode especially with all of Ririchiyo's freakouts. But, man, did I not care for all the feelings that were going around in the end.

So I liked this show. Doing stuff montages aside. I think the side characters were absolutely amazing and if the show only did that whole romance bit, I wouldn't have enjoyed it or probably watched it all the way through.

Also, that stuff that happened in the credits? Make that Season 2 and I'll definitely watch it.

Have not watched; will buy.

One Piece 9

These early episodes sure like to introduce annoying characters: first Luffy, now Usopp. Hopefully they become more tolerable down the line.

The storyboarder of this episode really likes slanted perspectives, to a disorienting degree.

Usopp is awesome, though. I guess I can see how he would be a bit annoying at first, but he grows a lot as the series go on.

Its not really child death. Its more nostalgia (or forced nostalgia in this case). Its why Square Enix has been able to keep afloat all these years.

That's true, so we have the triple whammy of tragic childhood death, cheap :firehawk nostalgia, and a love story. Most fictional works under that template already have the deck stacked in their favor from day one!

Actually, that template seems to fit Bridge to Terabithia pretty well, except Bridge to Terabithia is actually good.

Rinne no Lagrange Season 1 End

That is how you end a season. Maru!

So many things hinted at! A witch? Endless cycle? YURI LOVE!

Cross Game does it and does it well. It also has baseball!

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha has some pretty fantastic sequences in it.

Nanoha is far from hot-blooded.

Sket Dance 51

Nice to have a followup to Bossun's back story arc. Wish we could get something like that for Switch, but Bossun's actually changes the character relationships while Switch's doesn't.

Edit:

Nanoha and Nanoha As are definitely pretty hot blooded. Nanoha is one of the most badass magical girls ever.

The Light of El Cantare
Does the Buggy arc count as the Zoro intro arc? Because I would say that's worse. Kuro is at least a cooler antagonist. He was what made it a "just one more episode" show for me.

Buggy's arc is definitely worse than the Usopp intro arc, though I've never really considered the Buggy arc to be part of the Zoro intro because the fight against Buggy involves Luffy, Zoro, and Nami equally and doesn't do much to characterize Zoro, instead serving as the first showcase of his combat abilities. Rather, I kind of consider it an interruption of Zoro's intro with the intro consisting of the Axe-Hand Morgan episodes + the Kuina flashback.

I was never big on any of the minor antagonists, and I'd probably consider Luffy's battle against
Don Kreig
to be the most boring moment in the series. The only redeeming thing about Usopp's arc to me is the "boy who cried wolf" scenario, because that was probably the first time in the series that I experienced any real tension. I suppose I'm one of the fans that didn't really feel the series until
Arlong Park
.

It's true, though. Nanoha's going to befriend your ass.

Don Kreig

I would definitely agree with that. The Baratie arc is easily my least favorite in the series. It drags on far too long and doesn't really have many memorable moments. Thankfully, the following arc is when everything completely clicks into place.

The only redeeming thing about Usopp's arc to me is the "boy who cried wolf" scenario, because that was probably the first time in the series that I experienced any real tension.

That scenario is so played out, and it's not executed in any notable fashion here. Since I don't care about Usopp or whats-her-name, it just falls flat.

Good production values and two good episodes is certainly more than Angel Beats can claim.
