I really want to tell my mom to go fuck herself (not the exact words I'm thinking of, but close) and that I'm a man and I can make my own decisions, but I don't exactly want to live in my car after being kicked out of the house. Threats over being forced to join the army is honestly scaring me. Where can I look up deferments? Can I still use the conscientious objector one? I'm scared that I can't find a job and my mom's blind rage will force me into the army, I really am.

Um....you can't be forced into the army.

If need be, have you considered something like Americorps or the Peace Corp?

I'm currently on month 9 of joblessness myself. Good times, so poor. Sucks since all of my experience is in the financial market. Not a big market for brokers.:/

IBM - 1,400 (technically last week though)

IBM may be announcing more tomorrow.

I was affected by IBM's layoffs in 2007, however I was offered a different position in the company. I ended up going elsewhere, but I really hope all my IBM friends will be OK tomorrow :(

Christ, joining the Army isn't like a death sentence. Although the U.S. Army doesn't pay very well, certainly not as well as Canada.

I make $62K a year with only 3 yrs in the service :lol

My company announced 1,500 layoffs today. This is 100% about investors since we made our numbers last quarter. Investors are nervous so they are laying off people to quiet them. 100% bullshit.

Same here, though at least from what I understand those that are getting laid off are getting pretty good packages according to the press-one week of pay for every six months employed, up to 26 weeks total, and getting extended benefits and external training options made available to them.

I quit my job late last year before the shit hit the fan and the market crashed. I wanted to get into game art and stuff, and didnt anticipate such a rapid downward spiral. Ive been working since on my portfolio and should be finishing it soon, but im scared as fuck cause of this economic situation. Everything is a disaster. I just hope there are places still hiring. Im willing to relocate anywhere in the US, so i hope that helps.

:(

I almost enlisted last week. 2 Great 2 Depressing is good times.

It also depends where you live. I'm not sure which state you're in, but trying to save up making 45K a year while in New York City is a lot more difficult than doing it in OH or something.

Santa Barbara County, California

I was laid off a couple weeks ago. Much smaller company (40 people, about ten got laid off) but higher ups got laid off too. The CFO got laid off before me!

Still it sucks. And unemployment says they won't give me any money (?!) until they check into things further. My savings will only last me so long.

Old school manual labor jobs are not any more immune to this stuff than other jobs, and those people are getting hit pretty hard too. This hits just about everyone in some fashion.

Agreed. I think the only industry that's not as a affected by this enconomic downturn is the educational sector. While, you can cut some jobs, there's really not a whole lot of job duties that you can cut without screwing over the students.

I love (not really) how every single day some random company is cutting tons of jobs and suspending other misc. things for those who get to stay on board.

We're so fucked.

Circuit City should be 34,000. Other than that... ::vomits::

They say that it is darkest just before dawn, but I can still see 200 feet ahead of me, so...

Really? A spur of the moment thing? Making a decision like that out of the blue is crazy. I know you know this.
Yes. Sort of. Yes. Yes.

It all worked out though... if I do it won't be for a while. (Unless the country really does go 2 Great 2 Depressing. I'm practicing my goose-step just in case.)

Just got into another huge fight. I now have two months before my parents kick me out of the house. And my mom is extremely serious about me joining the army. Where can I look up deferments? Can I still use the conscientious objector one? And to anyone living in Seattle, Portland, LA, San Francisco or San Diego, can I move in with you? I want to be as far away from my parents as possible. I'm in a SNAFUBAR situation with no way out...

Conscientious objector? You do know that there is no draft right?

Don't worry about deferments. If you get one you'll have to move out anyways, so just string it along while you're waiting and then refuse to enter the army. Either way you're going to have to find your own way.

Although the military isn't that bad, especially a branch that doesn't deploy as much like the Air Force.

... but I can still use it? No? Oh shit... either way, I'm going to move out before the year is over, I can't take this shit anymore.

Use it for what exactly? No one can make you join the military. Well, I suppose if you were in trouble with the law and the choice was the military or jail, but otherwise, there is no need to use conscientious objector any longer. Simply just don't join.

Well, I gotta get a job, then. My mom can't make me, but she can kick me to the curb. ::cries::

My dad may lose his job too. I hope he doesn't :( Dow chemical just keeps cutting people right and left and my dad is worried he's next. He's not old enough to even touch his 401K without taking a penalty so he CAN'T lose his job without our family suffering. Hope it doesn't happen

Regarding Sprint, all this recession did was speed up the inevitable as they have been losing customers by the tens of thousands every quarter.

This whole thread is making me sad.

When I read that post listing all of those jobs being cut plus all of the ones before today...just makes me sad. I'm a junior in college right now supposed to get out in 2010 and I hope this gets turned around a bit before then. My uncle just got laid off last week I don't have a job but can't find one, but g/f company are doing job cuts and if she goes then it's ova.

:(

hah, our district is projected to have to cut 2 million out of the budget. Back to back years of cutting 2 million isnt going to keep educators unaffected. California, btw. You just won't won't hear about the cuts until this term is closing since the districts are budgeted till the end of the school year.

You need to meet my mom.

... I won't get shot at there, will I?
Dude, you can not be forced to join the Army or any branch. Buck up dammit. Has nothing to do with not wanting to kill people or not, if you don't sign the papers you ain't going anywhere. What country do you think this is anyways?

You might hate me for this but if you don't think that you can keep your mom from enlisting you then maybe you do need to be kicked to the curb and get some real life experience.

EDIT: Basically you need to learn that you always have your destiny in your own hands. It's yours take it, take ownership of yourself. If you don't want to join the Army then don't, no-one can make you. Granted you might have to live out of your car for a bit but make the decision and fucking own it, I guarantee you that as long as the decisions you make are your own that you can survive in this world and even be proud of yourself.

If you allow yourself to be ordered around like a child for the rest of your life for a semi-guaranteed paycheck you will never stop feeling like a tool.

So. I work for Intel, in finance. Intel announced 6,000 layoffs. 5,000 are at the five old factories they are closing. I don't support one of those factories. But there's another 1,000 cuts to go.

Then we get an email last week outlining how the layoffs impact finance, and there's a big section on what will happen in the case of "redeployments at continuing factories". That would be everyone else. Those were to come in the next couple of weeks.

Now, the worst time to layoff finance is during month end close. Gotta close the books, giving people the boot then would be messy, to put it lightly. That was this week; it just wrapped up. In the past few rounds of layoffs, those laid off were notified first thing in the morning. And both my manager and the general manager just rescheduled their morning meetings, clearing the first three hours of their schedule.

Tomorrow is Friday, too boot. A nice day to ship people off.

I'm hoping I'm just being paranoid. But the environment is kind of paranoia inducing. Looking forward to going into work tomorrow. :\

well, you just covered a couple of things that would be considered the WRONG way to go about it.

Life is what it is. Sometimes you come up with a straight flush, other times there is dog crap in your shoe. Everyone loves it when they're up, but it's when you're down that is a true test of character.

you can sit here and be pissed that you might have to turn in one of your cars, go without cable, sell your house for pennies and move into a 700 sq ft apartment. but the bottom line is that you still have a warm roof over your head, still have your health and the other things that are truly important in life. and as is with everything in life.. for those who no how to handle is the economy is always cyclical. Keep your head down, make your payments that you can afford, and it will come back to high times again.

getting pissed because "the man" put you down is nothing but self pity. it seems cruel to say it, but the best thing a person can do during times like this is the same thing these companies are doing. trim the fat. keep yourself going and you will get a job again, you will be making good money again, and once things start turning around you'll have a leg up over everyone that is sitting there bitching how it's everyone else's fault that they're in the shape they're in.

Wow, awesome words; you are truly a wise fellow.

Please ignore the fool you were responding to...
