Square Enix announces Dungeon Siege 3 (SQEX / Obsidian / GPG collaboration)

Yea, but how many options does a company like SE have for making a wrpg or diablo clone. Very few developers have any expertise in this area. The big names are working on their own IP. That basically leaves Obsidian and Eastern European development houses. There just aren't that many third parties for hire that have relevant experience, and if I was SE I would consider working with an eastern european developer as extremely risky, unless Eidos has experience in that area.

Is Piranha Bytes working on anything with anyone right now?

You know, Ascaron Entertainment (the developer of two of the best Diablolikes) was looking for investement in late 2009. Now they're gone, but if S-E wanted to fund a hack and slash that would have been a better option :/

I don't know how the siege series of games keep getting sequels and spinoffs. Bowel movements provide more entertainment than the Dungeon Siege games managed. Chris Taylor should be a stock phrase for hypnotists when they're trying to put people to sleep.

Project Director interview and CG teaser
IGN: Obsidian's always been known for doing a great job of embedding interesting stories into its game worlds, so can you talk about the story surrounding Dungeon Siege III and how much of an integral part of the experience it is?

Rich Taylor: We can't go into story details at this time. We can say that story is every bit as important in Dungeon Siege III as other titles we have developed at Obsidian such as Neverwinter Nights 2 and Knights of the Old Republic 2. The player will be an integral part of the story that unfolds as they progress through the adventure. There will be decisions the player has to make. These choices can impact how your party feels about you or affect the way other characters in the game respond to you. There are times when the player has to make a decision that will make one group or another unhappy, and this will have a long term effect on aspects of the story.

One of the refinements we are making to this system for Dungeon Siege III is that we are having each of these decisions have a short term, mid-term and long term affect on the game. So, you'll see the effects of your decisions constantly as you play through to the end.

Lookin a little Diablo there if ya ask me.
Well, I guess if we classify anything that takes place in a medieval European dungeon as Diablo, then I could see where you're coming from.

I mean, this is pretty much what the last two looked like, no?

Point taken.

But god I remember Dungeon Siege I & II looking MUCH better than that.

bad art meets bad tech...

dungeon siege was crap - and i cant believe, they are allowed to make a third game (i know, there was a crappy psp game too).

I'm actually looking forward to this. Been wanting a good Diablo style RPG on consoles for a while. Sacred 2 was pretty decent, and I even managed to enjoy Untold Legends back when the PS3 launched. I really wish somebody would just make a 4 player WoW clone on consoles already though. I thought WKC was a step in the right direction, but the combat was way too slow. I hope this game, 38 Studios game or Arcania fill the void.

This one was on my radar about a year ago but fell off...looking to get up to speed on the most up to date released info.

Must say the game looks tight!

does anyone know if the retail release will be playable without disc in drive? I want the physical box but not if it means the game can only be played with disc in drive, I'd go steam instead in that case...

I tried the demo. Purchase confirmed!

It's not Diablo 3. But there also isn't a better retail 4-player Diablo clone available. This is the best one of the bunch.

Jesus Christ, that looks ridiculously bad. That last pic with the Murloc-thing is... Ugh.
If you play this type of game that far zoomed in you are doing it wrong. The game looks fine from the zoomed out overhead view on PC at least.
