I'm impressed that they have judges in there. However, they seem misplaced anywhere outside of Ivalice. So I ask: Is Eorzea in the same world of Ivalice?

No it's not, and they're not judges. . . But what might be part of the fact in similarity is the character design is Akihiko Yoshida

You gonna call Garland or Golbez a judge cause they wear full armor and have horns on the helms? :p

This, visually, is what I always imagined a HD, 3D Final Fantasy looking like. I have no clue what they were trying to go for in XIII, but that technicolor, cirque du soleil, j-pop stuff can go jump off a bridge.

Yes, agreed FF 1-6 would most likely lean towards this direction if fully realized in CGI (minus heavy Amano influence).

This is cool, I was really excited for FFXIV and then it turned out to be a massive pile of dung. I may actually try it out if this version is any better.

Also, who the hell hired the narrator for that trailer? Pick an accent and stick with it, dude.

I guess that they don't have to be Judges after all, but I thought it could have been.

I'm sure it's an American who's impersonating some British voice.

We'll see about this one. Squenix has a lot to prove to a very skeptical MMO playerbase at this point. Re-branding FFXIV is a bad idea because of it's bad rep. I would have called it FFXIV-2 and pretended it was a new game.

On an unrelated note, it's not an exaggeration that while Tera itself has a lot of problems, once you've played it, it ruins all other MMOs which don't have an action combat system.

Final Fantasy XIV: Cataclysm. :p

excited

I predicted this would happen long ago, actually. Even my time-frame was mostly correct.

That's only if a player wants an action combat system in their mmo.

But I have to agree that you were rather spot on (in terms of them rebooting that way). I can't remember when they actually announced their whole plan of discarding this current iteration of the game though.

Never played an MMO in my life, does this have a story?

Yes it does.

As far as track records go, a lot of people who played through FFXI said that it has one of the best stories (if not the best) in the franchaise.

Its actually pretty cool, if you logout in your private room, they treat it like going to sleep. Once when I login to the game, I got a nightmare cutscene and when it ended I fell from my bed and woke up on the floor. Thats pretty neat.

Yes, even XIV as it is now (pre 2.0) is very story focused, fully voiced cutscenes and whatnot as well, and the writing is great

There are virtually no voiced cutscenes.

The quest and main storylines of "1.0" are pretty detailed and they are going to disappear forever come 2.0. Sort of like a "prequel".

You know, this is a good image to keep bookmarked for the inevitable and endless goobers who whine about how FF only has waif-like prettyboys.

Guy looks like he could fit into a generic American action film, a vague 25-30 year old caucasian male with a bit of battle experience under his belt.

Huh? I thought the main quests were going to carry over, just be re-done?

Nope. The current version's story will be completed scrapped as 2.0 is set x number of years after the final story quest I believe. They can't keep the plot line anyway because the world as it is will look quite different in 2.0

Oh geez. I've been wasting so much time, now I've gotta catch up! I must've read "replaced" as "improved" somewhere down the line, and I've been ignoring the main quests thinking that they're going to be improved in 2.0.

When they announced 2.0 they made it pretty clear that all the content in the previous version would be exclusive to that and you'd have to keep playing to get the chance to experience it. After that it would never be playable again in any form.

I'm still kinda bitter that I wasted a month in summer 2010 beta testing this game for a shitty launch.

All I can say about this new trailer is that I don't trust full CGI trailers from SE anymore.

Well, full CGI should never be trusted, really - it's not the game. They're just eye candy to build hype and should never be used to make decisions.

With that said, SE has really done a lot to try to ensure those who bought the original don't feel burned. All the free play time and legacy are quite a massive olive branch for a company like SE to extend, I think.

The only thing I can say as someone who has been playing since Beta is that the game today is not the game it was at release. At the moment the content is already tons of fun and the storyline in the final fight against the empire before the impending doom of meteor was absolutely amazing.

I truly wish people would keep an open mind, 2.0 should be really interesting. Almost all release issues have already been dealt with and the new typical MMO UI that people want is coming too. ^^

Final fight from the current pre-disaster storyline, did it yesterday.

Im currently playing Tera and I love the combat system the game uses. Hows the new 2.0 combat system? I hope it took some cues from Tera.

2.0 battle system will apparently be an even faster version of what we have. The battle system was already totalla rehauled a few months ago and it will be further tweaked for 2.0. Currently it has auto-attack and a combo system to directionally chain weapon skills and spells.

The bosses (Ifrit, Moogle King, Garuda, and the raid bosses) all have special mechanics as well so it's all about learning to dodge field effects, learning your positioning and learning your job combos in order to win the battles. Only problem at the moment in this version is latency for Eu and US players and animation lock, but thats getting fixed for 2.0.

is the story complete yet?
want to see it on utube once it finishes
i enjoyed the story back when i was playing

Well this from patch 1.23 and 1.23 a, b and I think c are still coming out before the alpha and beta. There is gonna be a hard mode of the Nael von Darnus fight.

But the storyline has a nice "Yay, you saved the world!" ending, but we have all seen the rebirth trailer so know whats coming lol.

And the Grand Company/Umbral Era/Meteor storyline took over as the main storyline, the original one ties into it too though but that one concentrated on the Black Wolf, not on Nael von Darnus, the White Raven.

Did they give a release date for 2.0? Can't seem to find it in the OP unless I'm blind.

I am actually interested in playing this now, since it seems that 1.0 players carry over to 2.0 should I just buy it now?

2.0 will Beta for PC users some time in October and be fully out before the end of the year. PS3 in Q1 (seasonal, not financial) 2013.

I would say wait until 2.0. Us 1.0 players have a unique storyline only we can play but to experience it all you have tp be lv50 and experienced at the game. When the alpha starts our chars will be unavailable for over a month when the data is ported over to the new server and game structures.
Would not be worth it to start now and only be able to play for a few weeks imo.

Nice! I think I finally got myself in a static for AV runs, so hopefully I can get moving again on the quest.

So this is suppose to be more like WoW then FFXI? I was a bit excited for this (I do own the game, but never played past the trial). But I'll pass if this is the case. TOR proved that there is no way to make the shitty theme park palatable anymore.

Kind of a ways back but since no one responded to this I felt like I should chime in. They are not making this like WoW, they are bringing in some systems that became famous from WoW but they are going off and doing their own thing with it. Stuff coming in 2.0 not in current game that could be 'reasonably' consider more like WoW then FFXI (But a lot of games can say they did it as well).

1) Instanced Raids/Dungeons with multi-server content finder that does match making to create parties and then teleports you to event. This works for more then dungeons though and the director promises to try and make this system usable for almost all party related content including stuff like Behest.

2) Proper MMO UI for keyboard and Mouse control. Its better then it was before in 1.0, but they are remaking the UI and responsiveness of the controls to be closer to WoW then FFXI.

3) Quest Chain hubs for specific level range. Do content to level up, not level up to do content. Said there should be about 5-6 hubs in each region.

4) This is a HUuUuuGe stretch but BG and Arena style PvP is coming, but from the sounds of it they want to go Dark Age of Camelot style PvP with 3 factions at play rather then just 2. Will have its own PvP rewards EXP gain, abilities designed for PvP etc. Not a simple unbalanced game it was in FFXI with Ballista where you got no rewards.

Stuff being added in 2.0 not like WoW AT ALL.

1) Full housing system where you own not just a house but land to make other quality of life additions like a garden or a stable for chocobos.

2) Buddy system like fellowship from FFXI, or companions from SWTOR, can create a customized chocobo to fight alongside you. Raise it from a chick, make it a tank, caster, damage dealer or healer. Can raise more then 1 chocobo and there was rumors of them making a 'Fat Chocobo' as a storage mule in the field.

3)Its in game now, but it needs to be emphasized, the ability to level any class to highest level including crafting and gathering all on one character and not lose any experience to change in the field. This alone adds a very unique dynamic to your playing experience where the game doesn't quite feel like its a theme park rails.

Lots of little changes etc. from a given formula, like the free company system where you as a guild choose to work for public companies like a mercenary group. Eventual (but not at launch) addition of collaborative crafting for large scale projects like a ship. This is just a sample. Its only become more like WoW in the sense its bringing quality of life improvements that have become a staple of this current MMO generation into the game, but the stuff that makes FFXIV/FFXI unique are still going to stick around.

Im currently playing Tera and I love the combat system the game uses. Hows the new 2.0 combat system? I hope it took some cues from Tera.

We don't know exactly how the combat is going to function in 2.0 but Yoshida makes it sound like its a faster, and more party influenced version of the current system with of course easier user input with the overhauled servers and animation system. Right now in game its a mix of turn-based/action style combat where you build tp/mana through either auto-attack or patiently waiting for mana to fill (standard practice) but position of your character when using attacks or defending against attacks becomes a necessary strategy, especially in boss fights. Stand in the right spot when an attack is about to go off, make sure you are behind the enemy to start a personal chain etc. Its not like Tera combat, but it can hold its own. But like I said, we honestly don't know what 2.0 combat is going to be like because no one but the developers have actually seen it in action.

I'm sorry, I'm way out of the loop as a non-pc gamer, but are traditional FF classes now in it? I could've sworn they originally weren't. Is Red Mage in?

Classic jobs are in the game, are unlocked at lv30 and serve as a specialistation of the basic classes. At the moment you have: Paladin, Warrior, Bard, White Mage, Black Mage, Dragoon, Monk.

Since there are only two mage classes at the moment, we can probably expect more for 2.0. Probably Summoner or Red Mage.

I'm thinking about jumping in once this new update is out. It looks spectacular. Will the combat, leveling and questing system receive a complete overhaul?

Read the post 3 posts above yours. ^^ Meh, page break, this is what someone posted:
