Square Enix on the five concepts that define Final Fantasy

Square Enix has shared the five concepts they feel define something as Final Fantasy.

I'm sure there's interest in debating this.

But what exactly makes a Final Fantasy a “Final Fantasy”? To answer this question they put together a list of the five minimum components for a Final Fantasy.

The first item on the list is “magic”, an obvious point on the list given it is a key component in every iteration of the franchise. The second is “summoning”, which has been a staple of the series since Final Fantasy III. The third on the list of needed components is “gorgeous beauty”. This one is interesting as, given the sprite-based nature of the first six Final Fantasies, “gorgeous beauty” didn’t really enter the equation until the PS1 era. Still, no doubt modern Final Fantasies are very much into being visually stunning in both design and graphics.

The fourth thing needed in a Final Fantasy is a little ambiguous: “refinement.” They didn’t specify refinement of what exactly, but each game in the series has at least tried to refine the parts of gameplay that didn’t work in the previous iteration. The same can be said of graphical refinement as there can be no doubt that each Final Fantasy has looked better than the previous incarnation (with the possible exception of the MMOs).

Lastly, they stated that Final Fantasies need “change and challenge”. The “change” part is obvious, with each numbered Final Fantasy taking place in a new world with a new cast. The battle system also changes from game to game as well. As for “challenge”, that is a bit more ambiguous, but it could mean that each world has a challenge that must be overcome. It could also speak to finding the balance in gameplay between tedious grinding and welcome challenge.

Final Fantasy *and* lists? This thread is off to an auspicious start. I give it 10 posts before somebody says [FF they hated] doesn't meet these requirements.

I play them for the story and atmosphere...couldn't get into III (UK..) for that reason.. "light vs dark" - played it after VII, IX and X though to be fair.

Also... I suspect this isn't exactly what they were referring to? (didn't read full article):

The “change” part is obvious, with each numbered Final Fantasy taking place in a new world with a new cast.

Really?

Really?

Kotaku writer done goofed by implying the pre-PSX games weren't beautiful

But anyway, I would be curious to see what the players list as their core Final Fantasy concepts

I was hoping "world journey" would be one of the concepts because that's the aspect I liked the most when I played my first FF.

:/

You could argue that "gorgeous beauty" in the first six Final Fantasy games could extend to the character artwork.

A good story isn't one of them.

HAH!

or characters.. or .. well... anything else

Oh Kotaku, just as irrelevant as ever.

Lists, lists, lists! My favorite Final Fantasy concepts:

6. gorgeous beauty
5. summoning
4. change and challenge
3. magic
2. refinement
1. Lightning because she's a cool, beautiful, powerful female <(^_^)>

It's nice that they have some kind of vision for every Final Fantasy game but it doesn't look like they're following through on "change" when the they've pumped out/are pumping out -2, -3 sequels and MMOs bearing the franchise tag.

They forgot to list the most important concept:

"Get money."

GILGAMESH uses magic. GILGAMESH can be summoned. GILGAMESH looks gorgeous. GILGAMESH changes in his ROYAL APPAREL and GILGAMESH is CHALLENGING.

I could swap GILGAMESH out with anything and it would work

Therefore GILGAMESH is Final Fantasy.

FANKINGISM

I'd say:

-strong expression of atmosphere/personality (similar to what they're saying about 'gorgeous beauty,' I think, but hopefully getting the notion of character personalities, a consistent aesthetic, etc. under its umbrella)
-feeling of achievement and increasing strength/versatility
-polish (pretty clearly what is meant by 'refinement' - FF games continue to be insanely well-polished pretty much all of the time)
-newness (change and challenge)

the "magic" and "summoning" ones are, like, dumb as hell. "summoning" as a bullet point is as valuable as "includes someone called Cid" as a bullet point. It's good to have traditions but they need to mean something and add to the game, not be thrown in because it feels like you're required to (see: the useless FFXII and FFXIII summons)

Really ? Reallly ?? Is this guy 12 years old ? It's like no game could be beautiful till the PS era then.. of course...

Anyway on the subject, i would say FF is 3 things imo.

_Romantic stories about grown up character with sad destiny
_Nobuo Uematsu
_Great systems

According to that, FF has been dead partially since FFVII, then almost completely since FFX.
The only thing that defines it today is the great system part, but that makes it a good rpg, that's all.

FFIV
FFVI
FFIX
FFXII
FFT

You meant these five, right?
(If you want to substitute FFIV for FFVII, I'm fine with that too.)

V is better than IV, so I'd put V over IV any day.

But other than that, that list is right. FFVIII might be my favorite FF besides VI, but it's certainly not the quality of the other ones. I just love how broken and insane it all is.

I'd argue that 2D SNES-era sprite-based games are objectively "more beautiful" than early PS1-era graphics.

Those polygons have aged horribly, while SNES RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound hold up incredibly well.

It seems like they don't even know what Final Fantasy about. Not because their list is bad, but because most of it is vague enough to apply to any series. Maybe that's part of the problem?

And how the heck was Materia -> Draw an improvement in combat mechanics?!
