Square Enix: Unannounced Game Will Shock You

Xenogears 2? Really?

That talent is long gone from SE.

But they still own the IP, and Xenosaga didn't quite hit the spot with many gears fans.

I don't know what to think of Square anymore, in the 90s they were my God. But now I haven't bought one of their games for about 6 years. Just unsatisfied 2 day rentals. At risk of hyperbole I'd say each year they're actually going to have to deliver on fans expectations one day, as their reputation and sales with it decline.

Deus Ex 3 trailer looked real nice though.

Square x Obsidian is my guess, too.

I'm still leaning toward Square x Obsidian. But not Fortress. Something new maybe, or some older not as popular IP.

Y'all know something?

How many projects does Obsidian have going on anyway?

They've finished Alpha Protocol. Are nearing the end of development for Fallout: New Vegas. So I assume they have another project going on as well.

Alpha Protocol just finished so they have:

-Fallout: New Vegas
-The Wheel Of Time Game
-Unannounced Game

Still cannot believe that Obsidian is doing everything except the writing for that game.

It is the only thing they are good at and the idiots who hired them do not have them do it!

Secret unannounced game footage... playing on a giant monitor outside the Staples Center?

Well let's wait until there are more details (like an actual announcement for a real game instead of a partnership deal) before we continue bitching and whining about this one. Lol.

Obviously the best place to hide something is right in the open.

Edit:

Agggggggggggggghhhh why is GameVideos so shitty.

I don't want to assume Square Enix is making an RPG about modern warfare. It's so... un-Square Enix.

Have you seen what they've been publishing lately? :lol

This would actually fit really well with their push toward the Western markets.

That said, the video didn't look very thrilling.

They're telling the truth.

PSBlog: What are your feelings about the current state of the game industry in Japan, compared with the West and what Western games have you been most influenced by?

Kitase/Toriyama: Some people have been saying that the Japanese game industry is dead, and all that… I dunno. I will say that Final Fantasy XIII is one really epic title for high definition consoles. With this game, we are going to resurrect the whole thing. As for Western games that have influenced us — FPSs mostly. The Call of Duty series, for example.

I thought they said that for the sake of getting more publicity and for the Western (FPS) crowd to look into FFXIII more? :lol

I don't think it was just that, I remember watching some video interview with Kitase, he was comparing the combination of cutscenes/set-pieces and combat in the game to story progression in Modern Warfare (or something like this, can't find the video) which is a fair point IMO, I'm sure they've looked at games like Modern Warfare as a source for inspiration because of massive commercial success it had. They are the publisher of the game in Japan as well.

I think XIII's linearity was necessitated by its rushed 1.5 year "true development" after they finished crystal tools... And as the project was nearing a close and CoD buzz built in the west, they noticed that another popular, trending game was utterly scripted and linear as well, and they invoked the comparison to justify their game style.

Not for a moment do I believe that Japanese game designers actually played CoD4 in 07/08 and said "let's make an FF game with the same game progression!"

It's more like.. "Hey guys, that popular game is linear too!"

This video was just posted by a user on gamevideos/1up. It's cam footage of a trailer playing on a giant monitor outside of the Staples Center in LA. Whoever posted it doesn't seem to know what it is. You can make out the word 'Nerkas' at the end of the trailer so I did a search on it. Although the website is currently blank, the nerkas.com domain is registered to Square Enix Europe. I have no clue if this is related to 'Project X' since 'Project X' is supposed to interest RPG fans and this game looks like a 3rd person shooter based on the footage. Also, SE Europe is Eidos so this may very well be completely unrelated since squareenixdave works in the SE US office.

Looks terrible, whatever it is.

Would "Shock" us indeed. But who owns the rights to this franchise?
Was this with Eidos or isnt it EA?
EA. There was a rumor, I have no idea if it's true, that Dead Space started as SS3.

And everyone will feel silly when they see the answer has been in front of them the entire time. Yay for off-the-wall SE hype!

So it looks like the RPG they've been touting is something teaming together with Gas Powered Games like they did for Supreme Commander 2. Man, I wonder if Gas Powered Games has any experience with RPGs???

Dungeon Siege I, II and Space Siege.

They started with RPGs : Dungeon Siege. I hope it's not Dungeon Siege III that they've been teasing all along.

Oddly enough, I felt those were progressively worse games.

Well, I suppose Dungeon Siege II was only worse for its time as opposed to being worse than Dungeon Siege I.

Who knows? But since when have teases like this ever lived up to what people expected (wanted)?

Has anything been mentioned about GPG even considering DS3?

Chris Taylor talked about it back in 2008. Since then, apparently nothing has been said about the game.

Would say the purchase of a studio like Obsidian go unnoticed? Probably not since they have projects with other companies.

I always thought Square should have bought a studio like Bioware. Have some hand in the WRPG bucket. I guess this would be the next thing.

I guess maybe they bought Gas Powered Games.
