English studio. Even as a joke, we can be spared that one.
It was a joke, but now that I think about it, Square could learn a thing or two about compelling storytelling from NT after playing Enslaved. A FF with the quality of motion capture, facial expression and voice acting that Enslaved has would be a big step forward.

Sounds good to me. My biggest issue with many western games is the aesthetic. My biggest issue with Japanese deciding to go all "western" on a game is when it's with an existing [beloved] IP. If they are combining the SE art direction with the knowledge or game design of a western development team on a new IP, then I'm interested in the outcome.

Shiokawa summed his part of the presentation up with a slide listing "Not a focus on realistic games, not fantasy, but believability."

I'm not sure I understand what this means. Like Metal Gear Solid? If so, then... proceed.

Believability as in creating a world that, while completely fictional and/or fantastic, seems plausible.

So does this mean gangling emo kids with frosted hair wielding 100 pound swords as long as the wielder is tall are out?

What is believable in the mind of a Japanese person though? Gundams?

I'm thinking MGS is the best example of what he's talking about if I'm understanding him correctly. The first one was pretty believable yet still had fantastic elements like Psycho Mantis and a guy with surgical precision with revolvers.

He's not really talking about story or setting at all. Instead he's saying that when western developers make a game, their strengths are in making something feel believable, even if it's a little boring. Instead of being stylized for example. Look at the picture next to it, it shows a stylized cat, and then it shows a more realistic cat. That's basically what they're going for.

It shows a stylized cat and then it shows what looks like a photo of a cat. That doesn't gibe well with the rest of the slide at all. It's best to just ignore that part of it.

Reading the the summary it seems his comments are more focused on characters; Their motivation and the way they look.

That is true. Square knows how to write stereotypes, not characters.

Sure, I agree. What I'm saying is, it's more about a creation of a cohesive and believable setting in the game, and that includes relatively "realistic" proportions and design. MGS would be something that is considered believable, sure. Gundam would to if presented in a... Front Mission way I guess. In which case I'll say Front Mission is a better example anyway. This would be in contrast with more of any "anything goes" sort of direction like say Kingdom Hearts, or Mario.

This was Mudered: Soul Suspects.

After finishing Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Death by Cube, Yosuke Shiokawa went to America. We first heard about Shiokawa’s project in 2010 which was said to be a AAA game and a Japan-America development collaboration. The game was finally revealed this year and it’s Murdered: Soul Suspect, a murder mystery game where you have to figure out who killed… well you. Airtight Games is developing Murdered: Soul Suspect and we spoke with Eric Studer, Senior Design Producer to find out more about the title.

...

Siliconera: One thing that surprised me was Murdered: Soul Suspect is a project from Square Enix Japan. Of course, Airtight Games worked with Square Enix before on Quantum Conundrum, but that led by Square Enix USA. How did this project start?

Airtight: The Creative Director, Yosuke Shiokawa. is from Square Enix Japan. This is his idea. He came to us with it and wanted to do a collaboration with us.
