St. Chris Nolan: I never meet anyone who actually likes 3D

“The question of 3-D is a very straightforward one,” Nolan said in a recent interview. “I never meet anybody who actually likes the format, and it’s always a source of great concern to me when you’re charging a higher price for something that nobody seems to really say they have any great love for.

“It’s up to the audience to tell us how they want to watch the movies. More people go see these films in 2-D, and so it’s difficult data to interpret. And I certainly don’t want to shoot in a format just to charge people a higher ticket price.”

Thank god someone finally said it. 3D does not make a film good or better, and instead tends to offer nothing more than an expensive gimmick. Seeing a dog's nozzle jump out of a movie screen does nothing for me. I can see why children are excited over 3D I don't get everyone else's focus on it.

“I’m fascinated to see what he’s going to do, but I don’t want any filmmaker to be pushed into doing something they don’t want to,” Nolan said. “3-D did not feel like the right thing for this movie.”

Thank goodness

Nolan said he’s open to shooting in 3-D one day, but only if it would enhance the story. He considered converting his 2010 blockbuster “Inception” to 3-D, saying the added dimension might have been a nice fit with the film’s dreamscapes. But he dropped the idea because there was not time to do a quality 3-D conversion.

It could have worked but ideally I would hope he wouldn't use post-conversion 3D...

wait, is there a difference in quality now between filming in 3D and post converting?

We're calling him saint now? Fine by me, but I just want to make sure I'm not getting confused here. Are we calling him saint?

I hate 3d so much, and lately it seems like the choice between 2d and 3d has been dwindling around here. I actually enjoy movies less in 3d.

Nolan is a good director but he's way wrong on this. Final destination 5 3d was the best example of 3d i have seen and it was worth full price.

I like 3D.

And I've met many people who do.

Odd that a filmmaker claims to have never met anyone who likes 3D.

I'm also completely fine with it not being used as well.

I only like 3D when its implemented properly... see Avatar and Promethius.

It's awful when its tacked on.. see Alice in wonderland, clash of the titans.

I enjoyed Prometheus in 3D.

The most frusttrating aspect of the format to me, is that 95% of the movies that come out in 3D are done on the cheap and use computers to add the effect. Very few movies are actually filmed in 3D and it makes a giant difference.

The film has to be made with 3D in mind. So far only two movies have really surprised me in 3D, and those are Avatar and How to Train Your Dragon. The Hobbit will be the next one for sure.

Otherwise I agree with him.

3D is ideal for certain films and definitely enhances the experience

it just doesnt work when its tacked on to everything in a half assed way

im willing to pay a little bit more to see the odd film that 3D works well with

3D doesn't really add or detract from the experience for me... it only detracts from my wallet. That being said, 3D is pretty worthless currently.

Me: Let's see Avengers
Kids: In 3-D
Me: No
Kids: Please!!!!
Me: Would you rather not see it
Kids: Hmphh! OK 2-D
All: [See movie]
Kids: That.Was.AWESOME!!!!

Moral of the story? Don't give in and enjoy the movie anyway

I don't know if no one likes 3-D. I think it's an indifferent experience that costs more. I enjoyed it in Avatar, but prefer by a large margin a beautiful 2-D picture.

That's just asinine. It OBVIOUSLY isn't for everybody, but I personally love 3D and know many people who feel the same. Plus the kiddies love it.

I tolerated Avatar in 3D because it's meant to be seen that way. Until someone invent glasses free 3D movie theater, stop it already.

Gotta agree with the man. Most of the time I only end up seeing a movie in 3D is because the limited 2D shows are sold out :/

And I certainly don’t want to shoot in a format just to charge people a higher ticket price.

IMAX tickets are much more expensive than 3D tickets.

Anyways, I love well-done 3D, but if someone feels that their movie would not benefit from it, they're probably right in assuming so.

Tron Legacy was the last time I saw anything in 3D. I am done with it. I do not enjoy it. I pray it goes away, although its lasted longer than I had hoped.

I loved Avatar in 3-D but haven't really cared for it much since. It sure as hell doesn't have to be tacked on to almost every movie.

I really liked it in Prometheus and Coraline, it was OK in Avatar, and I wished it wasn't there in Up and TS3. I don't think he has the point, I truly believe Coraline in particular benefited a lot from being in 3D, and so did few scenes in Prometheus
First person 'birth' scene in particular

You need to watch 3D stuff on a silver screen with a really bright projector or otherwise it looks too dim though. With a good theater setup there are no glaring technical issues with the format IMO.

The only 3D I liked was Avatar. It was only on a Dolby screen, but It was great.

I just watched Spiderman on Liemax today and it was too blurry during action.

I'm looking forward to 48FPS Hobbit in 3D.
